The half-life of a car or truck pressure plate depends on two factors: engine power and usage. If the clutch in an original scooter is not overused and the gear oil is changed regularly, it will last a long time. However, sprint starts, old, wrong, or too little oil or an overturned engine can quickly push the standard clutch to its limits. This is usually noticeable when the friction disc overheats and the brown cork coating turns black.
Whether and how to upgrade the clutch mostly depends on the power and rev levels of the engine and how you want to use it. Most trimmed engines can still run with a standard clutch as long as you use high-quality individual components. Another upgrade is to use a kit with more friction plates.
Each friction pair can transmit the same power. This means that a clutch with six discs can transmit twice as much power as a clutch with three discs. The precondition is that the diameter, lining material, and spring force remain the same.
To fit more discs in the original clutch, the larger friction surface and higher clutch load capacity were purchased with thinner plates whose thin steel sides hammered the nasty pawls into the cheeks of the clutch basket. The result is poor clutch control because the clutch plates can no longer move freely in the clutch basket.
If you try to fit more brake pads than intended into a tight space, another problem usually arises: the remaining disengagement travel is too little for the clutch to fully disengage when the lever is pulled. These new linings are designed for higher temperatures than standard cork linings and are therefore better suited for high loads (eg in racing). These modern pads also have specific levels of grip, sometimes requiring stiffer springs and special gear oils for optimum results.
