Open Wounds Can Be Treated With Silver Sulfadiazine, Which Works By Preventing Bacteria From Growing
Silver Sulfadiazine, a 1% water-soluble cream, is a sulfadiazine and silver combination. The silver ion bonds to the organism's DNA, releasing sulfonamide, which interferes with the microbe's intermediary metabolic process.74–76 It is most effective against P. aeruginosa and enterics, and it is as effective as any antifungal medicine against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. However, certain Klebsiella strains have been less well managed. P. aeruginosa resistance to silver sulfadiazine has recently been reported.
Silver Sulfadiazine can be used in either closed or open techniques with comparable efficiency. Antimicrobial activity has been shown to last for up to 24 hours. If a creamy exudate forms on the site, more frequent changes are required. One of the advantages of this topical medication is its ease of application and capacity to relieve pain. It has modest tissue penetration ability, although it is limited to the epidermal surface layer. However, unlike mafenide acetate, it is not associated with acid-base abnormalities or pulmonary fluid overload.
