The long-running series of football simulations by EA continues to earn a good amount of sales despite the harsh criticism of what seems like a majority of its fan base. The most recent edition, Madden NFL 21, has received heavy criticism from players and gave the game an egregiously low Metacritic score. The title's malfunctioning physics, numerous bugs in gameplay and a general lack of polish in the initial launch was the reason it was categorized as one of the worst games of the year, with fans at one point getting the hashtag NFLDropEA to trend on Twitter.

The information about the Madden NFL franchise returning to Nintendo comes from Youtuber Doctre81, who found the job posting for an "Online Software Engineer - (C+)" - Madden," which dates back to November 2020. Further inspection revealed that one section of the job requirements calls for two years of experiences working with "Microsoft or Sony game consoles." Although this might not be sufficient to make a judgement of, prior similar job ads at EA haven't mentioned Nintendo as part of their criteria. Madden NFL 13 on Wii U was the last time that the series was available on any Nintendo platform. EA had stated that they would not bring the game to the Nintendo Switch in the year 2018. However, the industry giant seems to be shifting its mind regarding the hybrid system.

If the theories of the job description be true, it could be a sign of a continuing shift in the relationship between giant N and Electronic Arts, with several of its franchises now available for the portable console. The company has already ported its battle royale free-to-play title Apex Legends to Switch. Many players have complained about Apex Switch's low processing power in comparison to their Xbox, PlayStation, or PC counterparts. Many fans have been dissatisfied by the poor graphics and slow frame rates, along with the lack of texture.

But, Nintendo does reportedly have an answer, and it could provide a reason for why and how Madden is likely to return. While it's still to be officially confirmed by Nintendo there are rumors that the Switch Pro hardware could be what will enable more graphics-intensive games being released on the platform.
