He created Public Systems Evaluation, later known as ENFORTH Corporation, as an outlet to bridge operations research directly into the cooperative work of cities and agencies. In 2008, Larson spread his influence far beyond MIT with the establishment of MIT BLOSSOMS (Blended Learning Open Source Science or Math Studies). BLOSSOMS offered teachers and students around the globe free video lessons in STEM long before online learning platforms were widespread.

One was the Lanchester Prize, which honored his early work on research in public safety. His co-written textbook, Urban Operations Research, is still popular at universities and has even found its way into a few high schools. This indicates not only the scholarly depth of his work but also its teachability to younger students.
