What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The majority of cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Regular screening through Pap smears and HPV tests can significantly reduce the risk by detecting abnormalities early.

Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

In the early stages, cervical cancer may not show noticeable symptoms, which is why regular screening is important. As the disease progresses, common symptoms may include:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding, such as bleeding after intercourse or between periods

  • Pain during sexual intercourse

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Watery, bloody vaginal discharge with a strong odor

The treatment for cervical cancer depends on the stage and size of the tumor. Common treatments include:

  • Surgery: Removal of part or all of the cervix or the uterus.

  • Radiation therapy: Targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells.

  • Chemotherapy: For advanced stages of cervical cancer.

  • Immunotherapy: Used for certain types of cervical cancer that do not respond to traditional treatments.

Prevention of Cervical Cancer

Prevention is possible through regular screening (Pap smears and HPV testing) and vaccination against HPV. Vaccination is recommended for young girls and boys before they become sexually active, as it significantly reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer later in life.

By taking preventive measures, being aware of symptoms, and undergoing regular screenings, cervical cancer can be detected early, making it treatable and potentially curable.
