Industrial Perspective: How Is Tungsten Carbide Made

Tungsten carbide is a cornerstone material in industrial applications due to its extreme hardness and wear resistance. For manufacturers and engineers, understanding how is tungsten carbide made is essential for optimizing production and ensuring consistent quality.

The process begins with tungsten ore, such as wolframite or scheelite. This ore is processed to extract tungsten trioxide (WO₃), which is then chemically reduced to produce tungsten powder. Carbon is added to the tungsten powder to form the raw material for tungsten carbide. This mixture undergoes carbothermic reduction, where it is heated above 1400°C to produce tungsten carbide (WC) powder.

To enhance toughness, WC powder is mixed with a metallic binder, usually cobalt. This ensures that while tungsten carbide is extremely hard, it is not excessively brittle. The mixture is then pressed into a desired shape under high pressure, forming what is known as a green body.

The final stage, sintering, involves heating the green body in a vacuum or inert atmosphere to 1400–1600°C. During this process, the cobalt binder partially melts, binding the WC grains tightly together. The result is a dense, durable tungsten carbide material, suitable for cutting tools, mining bits, and wear-resistant industrial components.

In conclusion, understanding how is tungsten carbide made from tungsten ore to finished sintered product highlights why it is so widely used in industrial applications. Its hardness, wear resistance, and toughness make it indispensable in modern manufacturing.
