Measuring What Companies Actually Do for Society: Inside CMI's Framework for the Champions of CSR
India/Global — December, 2025: CSR reports are easy to write. Proving that the spending behind them translates into real community impact is a different challenge entirely and it's the one Coherent Market Insights (CMI) took on as Research Partner for the ET Now Champions of CSR Conclave 2025,a national platform recognizing organizations for measurable social impact, governance excellence, and responsible business practices.
At the conclave, Mohit Shrivastava, AVP – Research & Consulting at CMI, presented the methodology built to identify India's "Champions of CSR," walking through the evaluation framework, data validation approach, and scoring parameters designed to keep the process neutral, transparent, and representative across sectors. He also discussed the strategic deployment of CSR activity, long-term community development, and governance-led responsibility with corporate leaders, policymakers, sustainability heads, foundations, and CSR practitioners in attendance — conversations that carry added weight as businesses increasingly try to align CSR with their broader ESG commitments.
Starting with Hard Eligibility Rules
CMI's framework didn't begin with reputation or visibility. It began with four concrete eligibility criteria: at least three years of operational presence in India (as of March 2025), a consistent CSR funding commitment, a dedicated CSR or sustainability function, and adherence to national CSR regulations and recognized guidelines. Organizations were then sourced across IT, FMCG, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy, automotive, manufacturing, financial services, and consumer goods, ensuring the final list reflected both legacy industries and innovation-driven sectors rather than skewing toward one type of company.
To keep comparisons fair, companies were grouped by their level of CSR investment — Emerging Enterprises (₹0–50 Cr), Growing Enterprises (₹50–100 Cr), and Established Enterprises (above ₹100 Cr) — recognizing that a large established company and a growing enterprise operate on fundamentally different scales.
Verifying Claims, Not Just Collecting Them
Every organization that cleared eligibility went through desk-level profiling and validation, drawing on industry magazines, corporate websites, CSR and sustainability reports, and regulatory filings. CMI's team looked specifically at program scope, financing consistency, implementation maturity, and quantifiable impact in areas like community development, healthcare, education, and the environment — the kind of detail that separates an active CSR program from a well-written annual report.
Scoring Impact, Not Intent
The scoring model reflects that same bias toward outcomes over ambition. CSR Program Implementation carried the most weight at 25%, followed by CSR Budget Growth and Community & Environmental Impact at 20% each. Compliance with CSR Regulations accounted for 15%, while Innovation in CSR and Leadership & Governance each contributed 10%. Together, the weighting pushed implementation effectiveness, governance transparency, and measurable social outcomes to the center of the evaluation, rather than rewarding companies simply for having a CSR budget on paper.
The process closed with independent jury evaluation from senior editorial leaders at The Economic Times, ET Now, and ET Edge, alongside CSR experts and independent evaluators, who assessed organizations on impact outcomes, governance practices, innovation, and long-term commitment. A final validation round cross-checked CSR disclosures, implementation records, and impact outcomes before any organization was confirmed.
Why the Rigor Matters
For CMI, the exercise reflects a broader ambition: giving India's CSR ecosystem a structured, replicable leadership assessment framework that can be applied across industries — one that pushes organizations to align social initiatives with measurable impact and governance accountability, and brings more transparency to how CSR leadership gets recognized in the first place.
