Barcelona Transfer News: The Bosnian joins Sharjah

Catalan giants Barcelona have officially announced the departure of their midfielder Miralem Pjanic.

In an official statement, Barca stated, “FC Barcelona and Miralem Pjanić have reached an agreement to release the player from the contract binding the player to the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.”

A former Metz academy graduate, Pjanic started his senior career with the German club. After just one year with the senior team, he was roped in by French Ligue 1 outfit Lyon.

He stayed three years in France before signing for the Italian club AS Roma. Upon joining Roma, Pjanic started to showcase his immense talent. He soon established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Italian league and earned contracts from even bigger clubs.

Pjanic however decided to join the most successful club in Serie A, Juventus. After signing for the Old Lady, Pjanic won four Serie A titles and two Coppa Italias.

The midfielder represented Luxembourg in the youth internationals. However, he decided to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s senior team and made his debut in 2008, and played an exceptional role in Bosnia’s first-ever World Cup qualification. So far he has represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in 107 matches and has netted 18 goals.

Pjanic joined Barcelona in 2020 as a part of the Arthur deal. He had a decent start to his Barca career but soon had a fallout with Ditch manager Ronald Koeman. Pjanic was then loaned out to Turkish club Besiktas.

With the arrival of Xavi Hernandez, Pjanic got a second chance to succeed in Barcelona. The Bosnian midfielder was a part of Barcelona’s pre-season and appeared in almost all matches.

The Blaugranas even preferred him over their academy graduate Nico Gonzalez. But he was still only the sixth-choice midfielder for Xavi and was expected to see very little game time. He did not feature a single minute in Barcelona’s first four league matches.

So when an offer from Sharjah FC came, Pjanic decided to move to Asia and preferred more game time than playing in Europe.

Known for his brilliant technical ability and work rate, Pjanic is a very versatile player and can play in every midfield position. So his arrival will surely be a big boost for Sharjah.
