What Are Central Venous Catheters?
Central venous catheters, also known as central lines, are thin, flexible tubes placed into large veins in the neck, chest, or groin to administer medication or fluid, obtain blood samples, and monitor central venous pressure. They provide long-term vascular access for infusion therapy, blood transfusions, chemotherapy, antibiotic administration, parenteral nutrition, and other medical treatments.
Types of Central Venous Catheters
There are different types of central venous classified based on their location and duration of use:
Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs): PICCs are inserted through a small puncture in the arm and guided into a large vein near the heart. They can remain in place for weeks or months and are primarily used for long-term antibiotics and chemotherapy delivery.
Tunnelled Catheters: Central Venous Catheter Also known as implanted ports, tunnelled catheters have the intravascular portion placed under the skin with the tip terminating in a central vein. The external portion remains buried beneath the skin to reduce risk of infection. They are intended for use over months or years.
Non-Tunnelled or Percutaneous Catheters: These temporary catheters have both ends situated outside the skin and are typically left in place for a few days. The distal tip terminates in central veins like superior vena cava or right atrium.
Arrow Catheters: Arrow catheters are similar to non-tunnelled catheters but have additional lumens to monitor central venous pressure and obtain blood samples simultaneously while infusing fluids or medication.
