If you're considering trekking in Nepal, the Tsum Valley trek may be on your list. It's a unique trip that leads you to a breathtaking, isolated valley. One commonly asked question is: how long it takes to complete the Tsum Valley trek?

How Long is the Trek?

The Tsum Valley trip normally takes between 14 and 18 days. The actual duration is determined by several factors, including your pace, number of rest days, and weather conditions. Here's a general idea of what the journey looks like:

1. Kathmandu to Arughat (Day 1-2): You start with a drive from Kathmandu to Arughat, which can take a full day. From Arughat, you start your actual trek.

2. Arughat to Soti Khola (Day 2): This is the beginning of your trekking adventure. It’s a relatively short walk to ease into the journey.

3. Soti Khola to Maccha Khola (Day 3): The trail starts getting more challenging but offers amazing views.

4. Maccha Khola to Jagat (Day 4-5): You’ll pass through beautiful landscapes and small villages.

5. Jagat to Chisopani (Day 5-6): The path gets steeper, and you’ll start feeling the altitude.

6. Chisopani to Chumling (Day 6-7): Entering the Tsum Valley, you’ll notice a change in the scenery and culture.

7. Chumling to Chhokang Paro (Day 7-8): This is one of the highlights of the trek, offering stunning views of the Himalayas.

8. Chhokang Paro to Nile/Chhule (Day 8-10): You’ll trek deeper into the valley, visiting monasteries and enjoying the serene environment.

9. Nile to Mu Gompa (Day 10-11): This is the farthest point in the valley, and you might spend a day exploring and acclimatizing.

10. Mu Gompa to Rachen Gompa (Day 12): On your way back, you’ll visit more cultural sites.

11. Rachen Gompa to Dumje (Day 13): The trail back follows a similar path but offers new perspectives.

12. Dumje to Soti Khola (Day 14-16): You’ll gradually descend back towards Soti Khola.

13. Soti Khola to Arughat to Kathmandu (Day 17-18): Finally, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu, wrapping up your adventure.

My Experience

When I undertook the Tsum Valley trek, it took 17 days. We took a few additional days off to acclimate and enjoy the breathtaking views. One of the most unforgettable experiences was staying at a little monastery in Mu Gompa. The tranquility and quiet of that location, combined with the hospitality of the local monks, made the entire journey worthwhile.

Walking around the villages, we met many pleasant people and learned about their unique culture. The children in the villages frequently greeted us with wide smiles and a happy "Namaste!" It was a heartwarming experience.

The hike is physically challenging, but every step is rewarded with beautiful views and a sense of success. If you enjoy nature and wish to experience true Nepali culture, the Tsum Valley trek is a fantastic excursion.

Final Thoughts

The Tsum Valley trek lasts approximately 14 to 18 days. It is not just the duration that matters, but also the experiences you get along the road. This walk has something for everyone, whether you're an experienced or a wildlife enthusiast. So, if you're planning on doing it, get ready for an incredible adventure through one of Nepal's hidden gems.
