After Bill Shankly resigned as Liverpool manager in 1974, the club was taken over by his close associate Bob Paisley. This modest and taciturn man managed not only to maintain, but also to increase the Reds' success over the next decade. Paisley continued Shankly's course of constantly updating the team and introducing modern coaching techniques. He attracted young and hungry players to the team, such as Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott and Phil Neal. An important characteristic of Paisley as a manager was his exceptional tactical flexibility. He skillfully adapted the team's play to the opponent, changing patterns and formations. This allowed Liverpool to remain unpredictable to their opponents. Under Paisley's leadership, Liverpool came to dominate English football. Between 1976 and 1983, the team won the league title 6 times, the FA Cup twice and the European Cup 3 times. Reaching the final of Europe’s premier tournament in 1977 was a real triumph for the Reds. They sensationally beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3:1 to become Champions Cup winners for the first time in their history.

This was just the first of three victories for Liverpool in Europe’s premier club competition under Paisley. The next two victories came in 1978 and 1981, establishing the club firmly at the top of European football. In addition, the Reds won the UEFA Super Cup twice, proving themselves to be the strongest team on the continent. Their success on the European stage has made them one of the most recognisable clubs in the world. Liverpool's dominance of English football under Paisley was also impressive, with the team setting records for points scored, goals scored and consecutive wins.
