Polyester is an umbrella term for any fabric or textile made using polyester yarn or fibers. The name is short for a synthetic man-made polymer commonly known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is made from a mixture of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. It sounds very scientific, but basically, polyester is a type of plastic.
First invented in 1941 by British chemists John Rex Whinfield and James Tennant Dickson, it became increasingly popular in the 1970s thanks to the way it was advertised: "A miracle fiber that can be worn for 68 days without Iron and still look great!" Controversy has been around the fabric. Thanks to the loud, shiny, and, shall we say, slightly plastic-looking suits of the 70s, polyester was known as a cheap and uncomfortable fabric.
