A couple of our friends who are bernedoodle breeders pa have asked for advice on what they should buy or do while they wait for their dog to come. In the event that it becomes useful to others, we decided it made sense to release it openly.

 

You don't have to buy everything at once, which is a general bit of advice we wish we had known sooner. You have the rest of your dog's life to buy exciting toys, switch up leashes and collars, etc. Avoid buying extras of items that won't fit your puppy after the first month or two, especially since they will grow. 2 to 4 weeks away

Pet insurance: We initially believed we had gotten insurance a week in advance, but we soon discovered that it actually takes 14 days for your plan to "activate." Our first two appointments were therefore exempt from the deductible. It's not a big deal, but it's best to avoid it if you can. FYI, we currently use Nationwide and are generally satisfied with it.

 

Socialization classes: Attending socialization lessons with dogs of a similar age and vaccination level was a major success for us. We are so relieved to know that she will cheerfully approach and play with any dog as a consequence of just a couple of these courses. Places are limited for these, especially during Covid periods, so register early.
