When you share your Cricut creations, it's almost inevitable that someone will ask, "Which Cricut should I buy?" This is one of the most common questions for anyone familiar with the world of Cricut. After answering this question countless times in my direct messages, I decided it was time to put all my insights into a blog post.

In collaboration with Hobbycraft, I've embarked on a series of blog posts covering everything Cricut-related—from selecting the right machine to exploring essential beginner tools and simple projects to get you started.

In today's post, I'll focus on the three main Cricut machine ranges available as of October 2021. We'll explore their costs, capabilities, limitations, and most importantly, how to determine which machine is right for you.

Understanding Cricut Machines

Before we dive into the specifics, let's start with the basics: what is a Cricut machine?

Pronounced "Cricket" (like the insect), Cricut machines are digital cutting machines that can cut a wide variety of materials, including vinyl, paper, fabric, and more. These machines are perfect for creating custom gifts, home decor, DIY projects, and custom clothing. While cutting is their primary function, Cricut machines offer much more.

There are three main ranges of Cricut machines: the Cricut Joy, Cricut Explore, and Cricut Maker. Each model falls into a different price category and offers unique features. I personally own the Cricut Maker, Joy, and Explore 3, and each one brings something different to my crafting experience. If you're considering purchasing your first Cricut machine, here are three key questions you should ask yourself:

1. What is Your Budget?

Let's face it—Cricut machines aren't cheap. They're an investment, not a spur-of-the-moment purchase. However, the cost is justified by the machine's versatility and the endless possibilities it offers. The most affordable Cricut model starts at £179.99, while the most expensive one can set you back £399.99.

But the cost of the machine is just the beginning. You'll also need to budget for materials, cutting mats, and basic tools. Depending on the machine you choose, you may also want to purchase additional accessories like pens or different blades. These extras can quickly add up. However, you can start with the essentials and add more tools as you go along. Hobbycraft offers bundles that can save you between £30-£60, so it's worth checking out what comes with these bundles to save some money.

Another consideration is the software you'll use to design your projects. Cricut's Design Space is free and comes with plenty of free images and projects. However, there is a paid subscription called Cricut Access, which provides access to a vast library of Cricut projects, fonts, and images. While Cricut Access isn't a necessity, it's something to consider if you want access to more resources. Of course, you can always find ways to create your designs without it.

2. How Much Storage Space Do You Have?

As much as I'd love to have a dedicated craft room, like many people, I do most of my crafting on the dining table. This means my Cricut machines need to be stored elsewhere when not in use. Up until recently, they were competing for space between my sewing supplies and under the bed! The larger machines, like the Cricut Maker and Explore, can be bulky and weigh around 5kg, so you’ll need to consider where and how you’ll store them, especially if you’ll be lifting them from a higher space.

On the other hand, the Cricut Joy is much smaller and lighter, weighing just 1.75kg. This compact size makes it easy to store and transport, making it a great option if space is limited or if you plan to craft on the go.

3. What Do You Plan to Use It For?

This is perhaps the most challenging question because it's easy to get excited and say, "Everything!" However, being honest about what you plan to use your Cricut machine for can significantly influence your decision.

Are you looking to make simple labels, greeting cards, and custom t-shirts occasionally? Or are you a DIY enthusiast who wants to dive into home decor projects or work with more unconventional materials? Perhaps you're a small business owner looking to expand your product offerings?

Being clear about your intentions will help you choose the right machine. If you're on a tight budget, this could help narrow down your options. On the other hand, if you anticipate growing your crafting or business needs in the future, it might be worth investing in a more advanced machine from the outset.

Cricut Joy: Small but Mighty

What Can It Do?

The Cricut Joy can cut over 50 different materials, draw, and even foil with the appropriate tool. It also has the capability to cut Smart Materials, which don't require a cutting mat, allowing you to cut lengths up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) or make repeated cuts up to 6 meters (20 feet).

Why It's a Great Choice

The Cricut Joy is one of my favorite machines and the one I recommend most often. It's compact, affordable, and doesn't feel like a huge commitment. Its small size is a significant advantage, as it hardly takes up any space. If you invest in the carry case, you can store almost all the essentials right inside it.

The portability of the Cricut Joy is another big plus. It's perfect for quick projects, like making a last-minute birthday card, and is easy to take with you wherever you go. I've taken mine on the road multiple times, even bringing it to work!

Cricut Explore: Versatile and Efficient

What Can It Do?

The Cricut Explore range sits in the middle in terms of price and functionality. It can cut over 100 materials, including cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on transfers. It also allows for more intricate designs, making it suitable for a wider range of projects.

Why It's a Great Choice

If you're looking for a machine that offers a balance between price and versatility, the Cricut Explore is an excellent choice. It's perfect for those who want to experiment with a variety of materials and projects without breaking the bank. The Cricut Explore is also a good option for small business owners who need a reliable machine for custom orders.

Cricut Maker: The Ultimate Crafting Machine

What Can It Do?

The Cricut Maker is the most advanced machine in the Cricut lineup. It can cut over 300 materials, including fabric, leather, and wood. It also offers the most versatility in terms of tools and accessories, allowing you to tackle almost any crafting project imaginable.

Why It's a Great Choice

The Cricut Maker is the go-to machine for serious crafters and small business owners. Its ability to handle a wide range of materials and tools makes it the most versatile option on the market. If you want a machine that can grow with your crafting skills and business needs, the Cricut Maker is worth the investment.

Conclusion

Choosing the right Cricut machine comes down to understanding your budget, storage space, and crafting needs. Whether you opt for the compact Cricut Joy, the versatile Cricut Explore, or the powerhouse Cricut Maker, there's a machine to suit every crafter. Take the time to consider what you'll use it for, and you'll be well on your way to making an informed decision that will enhance your crafting journey. Happy crafting!
