After World War II, the use of gasoline engines has shrunk, and they are still used in low-power internal combustion engines, motorcycles, cars, small airplanes, and light trucks. Divided into carburetor type and gasoline injection type; by the 1980s, the application of gasoline injection type increased.

Gasoline engines generally adopt a reciprocating piston structure, consisting of a body (cylinder head, cylinder block, crankcase), crank connecting rod mechanism, air distribution system, oil supply system, lubrication system, and ignition system.

When in use, air flows through the carburetor and carries gasoline into the intake pipe. In the process of flowing through the intake pipe, cylinder, and compression, gasoline evaporates quickly, and becomes gaseous at the end of compression, mixing with air to form a uniform combustible mixture. At this time, the ignition system provides instantaneous high-voltage electricity, and sparks at the spark gap of the spark plug, so that the trace mixture of gas accumulates heat and raises the temperature.

When it develops to a significant increase in-cylinder pressure, a bright flame core is formed; then it spreads and burns out the mixture in the cylinder, and the cylinder pressure rises rapidly. The heat of the mixed gas mainly improves the compression ratio of the gasoline engine, and the thermal efficiency is improved. The compression ratio has been increased to 10 from the early 4.5. When the compression ratio reaches 9 or more, coke will be generated in the cylinder, which will ignite the mixture and form abnormal combustion. In addition to the design of the combustion chamber structure, the main factor to increase the compression ratio is the improvement of gasoline quality. In the 1920s, it was discovered that adding tetraethyl lead to gasoline can increase the compression ratio of gasoline engines. The combustion chamber requires a high or low gasoline octane number. Lead is a harmful component in the exhaust gas.
