Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, was developed in the late 1980s to help people manage trauma. During EMDR, a therapist guides patients through specific eye movements as they recall anxiety-inducing memories. This process stimulates both sides of the brain, helping to lessen the memories' emotional impact and allowing for healthier processing. Although initially used for PTSD, EMDR is now also widely applied to anxiety, depression, and even chronic pain.
