Beyond South Beach and Sunbathing—Designer Silvia Tcherassi’s Guide to Miami
Though Silvia Tcherassi is Colombian through and through (the womenswear designer operates an atelier in Barranquilla to this day), she’s just as much of a Miamian. “We used to stay at the Hotel DiLido, which was designed by architect Morris Lapidus,” says the Barranquilla-born designer of the family trips to South Beach she took throughout her youth. “Of course, a lot has changed since then,” she adds. “The architecture and diverse history of Miami is something I will always appreciate and hold dear to me.”
The impression the city made on her runs deep. Today, Tcherassi spends about half her time in Miami, a city she considers as much of a muse as a second home. During this most recent Miami Beach Art Week, Tcherassi hosted her pre-fall 2023 show—designed alongside her daughter, who is the director of ready-to-wear for the label—which read as an homage to Morris Lapidus and all things Miami. There were bias-cut satin gowns tie-dyed with hues that echoed the city’s famous sunsets, as well as oversized eyelet punch-outs that carried a distinctly retro vibe. -tunnel rush
