Melt electrowriting technology is a fabrication technique used to construct 3D porous scaffolds using biomaterials like polymers, ceramics or composites for tissue engineering applications. In this technique, a biomaterial filament is uniformly melted and ejected through a spinneret upon application of an electric field. This ejected filament is then deposited layer by layer onto a substrate to build a 3D porous scaffold. The scaffolds produced using this technique mimic the structural architecture of native extracellular matrix very closely and provide an ideal microenvironment for cell growth. The biomaterial filaments used can range between 500nm to 10um in diameter which allows fabrication of structures similar to fibers present in tissues. The ease of controlling deposition parameters also enables construction of structures with precise control over features like pore size, porosity and interconnectivity.
