Meaning:
A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotating actuator used in pipe systems to control fluid flow. It was developed to function with a rotational disk that is situated inside the pathway of fluid flow. An external actuator connected via a stem operates the disk. The disk totally stops the flow even though it is oriented in the same direction as the flow. The disk passes the fluid when it is perpendicular to the flow. The disk must be spun 90 degrees in order to open or shut the valve.

Difference between butterfly valve and gate valve?
