According to Grinding Gear, POE 2 will not be an separate game
Path of Exile 2 comes with a new 7-act story and overhauls lots of its core systems, but your old stuff will carry over.
Path of Exile 2 was announced today at ExileCon, the top show that's going on at this very moment in Auckland, New Zealand. Despite the title, it's actually not actually a separate new game, but an expansion which also completely POE Items overhauls the beds base game at the same time.
Path of Exile 2 will add a different seven-act story that can take place twenty years after the end from the current game. It will overhaul lots of the game's core systems and rework the mechanics of each on the game's seven character classes. It's also receiving a major visual rework with physics-based rendering. For example, arrows will bounce from some surfaces and stick into others dependant upon what they're made from.
Path of Exile 2 characters uses the same "class archetypes" as those from the original game, but you must create a whole new one to be able to play the new story. PoE2 characters can choose from 19 new Ascendancy Classes that are different from the old ones, that will still be available in the first Path of Exile campaign. Fortunately, your cosmetics will carry over, the way it all exists in a single ecosystem.
Path of Exile 2 continues to be a long way off: Grinding Gear Games stated it won't likely even begin beta testing until very late in 2020. For the more immediate future, Path of Exile expansions continue to release on their own regular three-month schedule, with content that will be for sale in both Path of Exile 1 and a couple of campaigns.
