To become a PEO, there is a defined route that involves education, experience, and examination requirements. In this write-up, the reader shall be guided through the step-by-step process for becoming a PEO.

Education Requirement

To become a Professional Engineer Ontario, first of all, an undergraduate degree with an engineering major must be obtained from an accredited program in the United States. The degree must also be recognized by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) (for Engineering Programs only):

Further, you need to take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, which evaluates one's understanding of engineering principles.

PEO Engineering Experience Record

After passing the FE exam, you will need to gain four years of engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. During this time, you will need to complete a PEO Engineering Experience Record (EER) to document your work experience and demonstrate that you have met the competency requirements set by PEO. This record will need to be reviewed and approved by a licensed PEO before you can proceed to the next step in the licensing process.

Professional Practice Examination (PPE)

Once achieved that, all education and experience earning requirements will pressure you into sitting yet another rigorous examination, the Professional Practice Examination. This is a test that measures one's knowledge about the practice and ethics of professional engineering. To acquire your PEO license, you need to pass the PPE.

Application for License

After completing the PPE, you are now eligible to apply for your license. You should document the applications with all the required supporting documents, from education credentials to EER and exam results. The committee of professional engineers will then review your documents to see if you qualify to get licensed.

If approved, your application now translates into a Professional Engineer Ontario license, allowing you to practice professional engineering in the province of Ontario. With this license comes high demands concerning professional conduct and rules and regulations as set forth by PEO.
