Apple has reintroduced the recovery key security feature in modern versions of iOS and iPadOS, which can be useful when resetting your Apple ID password. Apple ID is really important for users. Many apps can be downloaded only from there. You can Install it on the App Store easily but with your Apple ID. A recovery key acts as an extra layer of protection for your Apple account should you forget your password and lose access to a trusted device. But what happens if you need a new recovery key for your Apple ID? 

While resetting your Apple ID password is a fairly simple task in most cases, things can get really complicated and frustrating if you don't have access to a device you're already signed in to. However, if the recovery key is enabled, you can use the 28-digit unique key as an alternative way to reset your password instead of going through the various rounds of entering your payment method information and answering security questions to reset your password. That said, you can still lose your recovery key, which means more trouble. Fortunately, if you have access to a device you're already signed in to, you can quickly generate a new recovery key if you lose your current one. Let's see how to replace the lost recovery key on iPhone. 

Replace lost Apple ID recovery key on iPhone or iPad 

If you have access to a device running iOS 14/iPadOS 14 or later and are already signed in with the same Apple ID, replacing the recovery key with a new one is quite simple. 1) Go to "Settings" on the home screen of your iPhone or iPad. 

2) In the Settings menu, tap your Apple ID name at the top.  

3) Go to "Password and Security" as shown in the screenshot below.  

4) Next, scroll to the bottom of the menu and tap on "Recovery Key". 

5) Now click on “Generate New Recovery Key” as shown in the screenshot below.  

6) A popup window will appear on your screen asking you to confirm your action. Select "Change Recovery Key" to continue. You’ll be asked to enter your device passcode.  7) Your 28-digit recovery key will now be shown to you. You can write it down in a safe place that you’re able to easily access. Once you’re done, tap on “Continue”.  

8) Now, you’ll need to manually type in your recovery key for verification and make sure that you haven’t made any mistakes while noting it down. When you're done, click the "Next" button. 

That's it, you have successfully changed your Apple account recovery key directly from your iPhone or iPad. We remind you that you can change the recovery key only if you have access to the device where you are already logged in. Make sure you never lose both your trusted device and your recovery key, because even Apple Support may not be able to help you change your password. 

Each time you disable and re-enable the  Apple ID Recovery Key feature, a new 28-digit key is generated for your account. Therefore, you can do this even if you have lost your current key, if you feel that someone else knows it, or if you are otherwise at risk.
