What is the difference between wafer and lugged butterfly valve?

Wafer and lugged butterfly valves are two of among the most widely used butterfly valves for controlling pipeline flow, albeit their applications, installations, and designs differ. Because wafer butterfly valves are designed to be installed between two pipeline flanges and fastened with bolts that pass through both flanges, they are lightweight and reasonably priced. Even though they lack threaded inserts, they are not suitable for end-of-line service because the removal of one side of the pipeline would lead to leakage and loss of pressure. On the contrary, both lugged butterfly valves have threaded inserts that enable them to be attached directly to the pipeline. Because of their design, which enables one side of the pipeline to be unbolted without affecting the other, lugged valves are appropriate for high-pressure applications and system isolation for maintenance. Although wafer butterfly valves are appropriate for low-pressure systems and general-purpose applications, lugged butterfly valves are used in high-pressure and critical service applications due to their strength and ease of installation.
