Furthermore, we compared this novel technique with the current practice of pericranial flap harvesting and insetting techniques. We also studied the adequacy of the TOPF in the reconstruction of postoperative anterior cranial fossa (ACF) defects.

    Multimodal intraoperative neuromonitoring (IOM) using somatosensory-evoked potentials and motor-evoked potentials is a sensitive and specific tool for detecting intraoperative neurologic injury during spine surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the use of multimodal IOM in a lower-middle-income country (LMIC) during cervical and thoracic spine surgery in order to prevent and predict new postoperative neurologic deficits early on. This is the first report of multimodal IOM application in LMICs.

    Resection of intramedullary spinal ependymomas carries great risk of postoperative neurological deficits. The objective of this study was to describe our experience using co-neurosurgeon teams to address intramedullary ependymomas to determine if the use of 2 experienced attending neurosurgeons with expertise in both neurosurgical oncology and spine pathology can improve outcomes for intramedullary ependymoma resections.

    We retrospectively compared surgical and disease control outcomes in intramedullary ependymoma cases performed by co-neurosurgeon (one neurosurgical oncologist and one neurosurgeon trained in spinal surgery) and single-neurosurgeon teams over a 13-year period at a single institution.

    Co-neurosurgeons performed resections in 34 (47.9%) patients, and a single neurosurgeon performed resections in 37 (52.1%) patients. There were no significant differences in the frequency of gross total resection in the co-neurosurgeon versus single-neurosurgeon group (85.7% vs. 78.4%, P= 0.45). Posterior stional neurological outcomes were not impacted by co-neurosurgeons performing ependymoma resections.

    68Ga-PSMA-PET/CT is a relatively new technique, that is rapidly becoming widespread. We aimed to contribute interobserver-intraobserver agreement of 68Ga-PSMA-PET/CT, among low/high-experienced interpreters.

    211At radiation sources with two chemical properties (Na211At and Free 211At) were prepared. The solutions of 211At were placed onto a dish with paper, and then, it was placed in a small animal cage for 3 h. After removing the dish, an imaging plate with attaching reference sources was placed at four walls of the cage for 15 h in a lead box. Imaging plates were read, and all pixel data were calculated using Microsoft Excel 2016 to obtain three-dimensional (3D) distribution. Calculated results were depicted using a 3D sphere model.

    The mean activity of Free 211At was 2.3 times higher than that of Na211At on all autoradiography images. In the cage, the shape of the dispersion of Na211At was almost homogeneous, whereas that of Free 211At was more heterogeneous.

Differences were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test with statistical significance defined as P ≤ 0.05.

    Between March 2017 and March 2020, 1850 early-stage breast cancer patients were referred for sentinel node mapping. All patients received a single injected activity of Tc-99m Phytate intradermally in the periareolar area of the index lesion using an insulin syringe. Lymphoscintigraphy images of the patients were done 1-2 h postinjection. Between March 2017 and September 2017, sentinel node nonvisualization was reported to the surgeon, and for the rest of the study period, the patients received another injected activity of the radiotracer, and immediately, other lymphoscintigraphy images were taken (with the same parameters).

The species-specific traits underlying these differential injury responses are poorly understood. In this review, we will compare the injury induced processes of the mammalian and zebrafish heart, describing where these processes overlap and diverge. Additionally, by examining multiple species across the animal kingdom, we will highlight particular traits that either positively or negatively affect heart regeneration. Yet, the structural and functional requirements to promote the transport of the iRhom-ADAM17 complex have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Utilising in silico and in vitro methods, we here map the conserved iRhom homology domain (IRHD) and provide first insights into its structure and function. By focusing on iRhom2, we identified different structural and functional factors within the IRHD. We found that the structural integrity of the IRHD is a key factor for ADAM17 binding. In addition, we identified a highly conserved motif within an unstructured region of the IRHD, that, when mutated, restricts the transport of the iRhom-ADAM17 complex through the secretory pathway in in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo systems and also increases the half-life of iRhom2 and ADAM17. Furthermore, the disruption of this IRHD motif was also reflected by changes in the yet undescribed interaction profile of iRhom2 with proteins involved in intracellular vesicle transport. In addition, we further dissect the inferred effects of genetic variants with respect to reaction rate constants, abundances of enzymes, and concentrations of metabolites, as main determinants of reaction fluxes and relate them with their combined effects on complex traits, like growth. Indeed, while mammals are generally considered poor regenerators, certain amphibian and fish species like the zebrafish display robust regenerative capacity post heart injury. The species-specific traits underlying these differential injury responses are poorly understood. In this review, we will compare the injury induced processes of the mammalian and zebrafish heart, describing where these processes overlap and diverge. Additionally, by examining multiple species across the animal kingdom, we will highlight particular traits that either positively or negatively affect heart regeneration. The pseudoproteases iRhom1 and iRhom2 are important for the transport, maturation and activity of ADAM17. Yet, the structural and functional requirements to promote the transport of the iRhom-ADAM17 complex have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Utilising in silico and in vitro methods, we here map the conserved iRhom homology domain (IRHD) and provide first insights into its structure and function. By focusing on iRhom2, we identified different structural and functional factors within the IRHD. We found that the structural integrity of the IRHD is a key factor for ADAM17 binding. In addition, we identified a highly conserved motif within an unstructured region of the IRHD, that, when mutated, restricts the transport of the iRhom-ADAM17 complex through the secretory pathway in in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo systems and also increases the half-life of iRhom2 and ADAM17. Furthermore, the disruption of this IRHD motif was also reflected by changes in the yet undescribed interaction profile of iRhom2 with proteins involved in intracellular vesicle transport. Since some of these approaches have been applied in organisms other than plants, we provide a critical assessment of their applicability particularly in crops. In addition, we further dissect the inferred effects of genetic variants with respect to reaction rate constants, abundances of enzymes, and concentrations of metabolites, as main determinants of reaction fluxes and relate them with their combined effects on complex traits, like growth.   • Candida spp. can form biofilms on mucosal surfaces and epithelial cells as well as on devices implanted in the body such as catheters and dentures, which are thought to underlie the most recalcitrant infections. It was aimed to show antifungal and antibiofilm activities of oregano oil (Origanum onites). The antifungal activities of some essential oils were investigated against C. spp. and among them, oregano oil was found to be the most effective oil and further biofilm studies were conducted with it. Oregano oil inhibited biofilm adhesion and formation of C. spp. and mature biofilms and also displayed the ability to reduce biofilm formation when they were allowed to form on surfaces previously coated with oil (up to 50% inhibition rates). In addition, oregano oil was found to be effective against dual biofilms of Candida albicans + Staphyloccocus aureus at different concentrations. This study suggests that O. onites essential oil has useful antibiofilm effects against C. spp. The inhibitory effects of O. onites essential oil, against C. spp., were demonstrated for the first time. It also had antifungal effect on biofilm formation and established biofilm even at ****level.

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the retention of a BioHPP (biocompatible highperformance polymer) telescopic overdenture supported by customized abutments made from 2 different materials after the simulation of 1 year in function.

    Twelve models of a completely edentulous mandible were three-dimensionally (3D)-printed. Two implants and 2 groups of customized abutments - group Bio BioHPP (n = 6) and group Ti titanium (n = 6) - were used to support BioHPP telescopic overdentures. A vertically dislodging force was applied to each denture until its separation before and after 240,000 cycles of chewing simulation and 1,440 iterations of cyclic dislodgement for the simulation of 1 year in function in order to measure maximum tensile loads needed to dislodge the overdenture. Student's t test and the paired t test were used for the statistical analysis (α = 0.05).

    The initial and final retentive forces of the Ti group were significantly higher than in the case of the Bio group. A significant decrease in the retentive forces within the 2 groups after chewing simulation was observed and it was higher in group Ti; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups.

    Keloid is a unique refractory syndrome characterized by a proliferation disorder of the fibroblasts. Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become a promising technique to modulate fibroblasts. However, use of the photosensitizer Phenalen-1-one (Ph1) in PDT for keloid remains to be explored.

    This study investigated the efficacy of Ph1-PDT in the in vitro and in vivo models of keloid.

A number of publications have documented the significance of the overexpression of several specific proteins, such as inflammatory mediators, in CRC progression. However, little is known about the potential utility of these proteins as circulating blood tumor biomarkers of CRC. Therefore, in the present review we report the results of our previous original studies as well as the findings of other authors who investigated whether inflammatory mediators might be used as novel biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of CRC. Our study revealed that among all of the tested proteins, serum M-CSF, CXCL-8, IL-6 and TIMP-1 have the greatest value in the diagnosis and progression of CRC. Serum TIMP-1 is useful in differentiating between CRC and colorectal adenomas, whereas M-CSF and CRP are independent prognostic factors for the survival of patients with CRC. This review confirms the promising significance of these proteins as circulating biomarkers for CRC. Tea is a popular beverage worldwide and exerts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as hepatoprotective effects. However, the potential role of gut microbiota regulated by tea in the prevention and management of AFLD remains unclear. Here, the protective effects of oolong tea, black tea, and dark tea on AFLD and its regulation of gut microbiota in chronic alcohol-exposed **** were explored and investigated. The results revealed that tea supplementation significantly prevented liver steatosis, decreased oxidative stress and inflammation, and modulated gut microbiota in chronic alcohol-exposed ****, especially oolong tea and dark tea. However, black tea showed less effectiveness against liver injury caused by alcohol. Moreover, the diversity, structure and composition of chronic alcohol-disrupted gut microbiota were restored by the supplementation of oolong tea and dark tea based on the analysis of gut microbiota. Furthermore, the relationship between liver injury biochemical indicators and gut microbiota indicated that some specific bacteria, such as Bacteroides, Alloprevotella, and Parabacteroides were closely associated with AFLD. In addition, the phytochemical components in tea extracts were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, which could contribute to preventive effects on AFLD. Here, by analyzing the gene expression profiles of newly established HSF1-knockout and -rescue cell lines, we show that HSF1 has a genome-wide effect on gene regulation in Pv11. The HSF1-knockout cells exhibit a reduced desiccation survival rate, but this is completely restored in HSF1-rescue cells. By comparing mRNA profiles of the two cell lines, we reveal that HSF1 induces anhydrobiosis-related genes, especially genes encoding late embryogenesis abundant proteins and thioredoxins, but represses a group of genes involved in basal cellular processes, thus promoting an extreme hypometabolism state in the cell. In addition, HSF1 binding motifs are enriched in the promoters of anhydrobiosis-related genes and we demonstrate binding of HSF1 to these promoters by ChIP-qPCR. In this study, we isolated microbes from soils chronically contaminated with crude oil using a culture-dependent approach with enrichment. The sampling of eight such sites located in the southern peninsula of Trinidad revealed a diverse microbial composition and novel oil-degrading filamentous fungi and yeast as single-isolate degraders and naturally occurring consortia, with specific bacterial species not previously reported in the literature. Multiple sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analyses confirmed the identity of the top degraders. The filamentous fungal community based on culturable species was dominated by Ascomycota, and the recovered yeast isolates were affiliated with Basidiomycota (65.23%) and Ascomycota (34.78%) phyla. Enhanced biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons is maintained by biocatalysts such as lipases. Memory strength was manipulated as a function of the levels of processing (deep vs. shallow) and repetition. Behavioral results were matched to brain responses using EEG. We found that correct identification of the new abstract figures and non-words was superior to old item recognition when they were merely studied without repetition, but not when they were semantically processed or drawn. EEG results indicated that successful new item identification was marked by a combination of the absence of familiarity (N400) and recollection (P600) for the studied figures. For both the abstract figures and the non-words, the parietal P600 was found to differentiate between the old and new items (late old/new effects). A number of publications have documented the significance of the overexpression of several specific proteins, such as inflammatory mediators, in CRC progression. However, little is known about the potential utility of these proteins as circulating blood tumor biomarkers of CRC. Therefore, in the present review we report the results of our previous original studies as well as the findings of other authors who investigated whether inflammatory mediators might be used as novel biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of CRC. Our study revealed that among all of the tested proteins, serum M-CSF, CXCL-8, IL-6 and TIMP-1 have the greatest value in the diagnosis and progression of CRC. However, the potential role of gut microbiota regulated by tea in the prevention and management of AFLD remains unclear. Here, the protective effects of oolong tea, black tea, and dark tea on AFLD and its regulation of gut microbiota in chronic alcohol-exposed mice were explored and investigated. The results revealed that tea supplementation significantly prevented liver steatosis, decreased oxidative stress and inflammation, and modulated gut microbiota in chronic alcohol-exposed mice, especially oolong tea and dark tea. However, black tea showed less effectiveness against liver injury caused by alcohol. Moreover, the diversity, structure and composition of chronic alcohol-disrupted gut microbiota were restored by the supplementation of oolong tea and dark tea based on the analysis of gut microbiota. Furthermore, the relationship between liver injury biochemical indicators and gut microbiota indicated that some specific bacteria, such as Bacteroides, Alloprevotella, and Parabacteroides were closely associated with AFLD. In addition, the phytochemical components in tea extracts were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, which could contribute to preventive effects on AFLD. We previously discovered that heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) contributes to the acquisition of desiccation tolerance by Pv11 cells, but the mechanistic details have yet to be elucidated. Here, by analyzing the gene expression profiles of newly established HSF1-knockout and -rescue cell lines, we show that HSF1 has a genome-wide effect on gene regulation in Pv11. The HSF1-knockout cells exhibit a reduced desiccation survival rate, but this is completely restored in HSF1-rescue cells. By comparing mRNA profiles of the two cell lines, we reveal that HSF1 induces anhydrobiosis-related genes, especially genes encoding late embryogenesis abundant proteins and thioredoxins, but represses a group of genes involved in basal cellular processes, thus promoting an extreme hypometabolism state in the cell. In addition, HSF1 binding motifs are enriched in the promoters of anhydrobiosis-related genes and we demonstrate binding of HSF1 to these promoters by ChIP-qPCR. In this study, we isolated microbes from soils chronically contaminated with crude oil using a culture-dependent approach with enrichment. The sampling of eight such sites located in the southern peninsula of Trinidad revealed a diverse microbial composition and novel oil-degrading filamentous fungi and yeast as single-isolate degraders and naturally occurring consortia, with specific bacterial species not previously reported in the literature. Multiple sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analyses confirmed the identity of the top degraders. The filamentous fungal community based on culturable species was dominated by Ascomycota, and the recovered yeast isolates were affiliated with Basidiomycota (65.23%) and Ascomycota (34.78%) phyla. Memory strength was manipulated as a function of the levels of processing (deep vs. shallow) and repetition. Behavioral results were matched to brain responses using EEG. We found that correct identification of the new abstract figures and non-words was superior to old item recognition when they were merely studied without repetition, but not when they were semantically processed or drawn. EEG results indicated that successful new item identification was marked by a combination of the absence of familiarity (N400) and recollection (P600) for the studied figures. For both the abstract figures and the non-words, the parietal P600 was found to differentiate between the old and new items (late old/new effects).     Early steroid withdrawal (ESW) is a viable maintenance immunosuppression strategy in low-risk kidney transplant recipients. A low panel reactive antibody (PRA) may indicate low-risk condition amenable to ESW. We aimed to identify the threshold value of PRA above which ESW may pose additional risk, and to compare the association of ESW with transplant outcomes across PRA strata.

    We studied 121,699 deceased-donor kidney-only recipients in 2002-2017 from SRTR. Using natural splines and ESW-PRA interaction terms, we explored how the associations of ESW with transplant outcomes change with increasing PRA values, and identified a threshold value for PRA. Then, we assessed whether PRA exceeding the threshold modified the associations of ESW with 1-year acute rejection, death-censored graft failure, and death.

    The association of ESW with acute rejection exacerbated rapidly when PRA exceeded 60. Among PRA≤60 recipients, ESW was associated with a minor increase in rejection (aOR=1.001.051.10) and with a tendency of decreased graft failure (aHR=0.910.971.03). However, among PRA>60 recipients, ESW was associated with a substantial increase in rejection (aOR=1.191.271.36; interaction p<0.001) and with a tendency of increased graft failure (aHR=0.981.081.20; interaction p=0.028). The association of ESW with death was similar between PRA strata (PRA≤60, aHR=0.910.961.01; and PRA>60, aHR=0.900.991.09; interaction p=0.5).

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the long-term results for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) treated with dynamic stabilization (DS) and to consider how we can improve the results.

    Few studies have reported long-term outcomes of DS surgery for LSS with or without spondylolisthesis.

    A single-center, single-surgeon consecutive series of LSS patients who underwent DS surgery with at least five years of follow-up were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-seven patients were included in the LSS group and 38 patients in the spondylolisthesis group. Patient characteristics, operative data, radiographic parameters, clinical outcomes, and complications were analyzed at baseline and follow-up.

    In the LSS group, all radiographic parameters (e.g., disc height, segmental lordosis, segmental range of motion [ROM] at the index level and proximal adjacent level, global lordosis, and global ROM) were maintained well until the last follow-up. In the spondylolisthesis group, glroved physiological DS system should be developed.Level of Evidence 4.

In 2013, a Best Practice Guideline for surgical site infection prevention in high-risk pediatric spine surgery patients reported strategies to decrease incidence. To date, no studies have looked at the efficacy of these strategies.

    A retrospective review of surgical site infection in neuromuscular scoliosis patients was performed. Neuromuscular scoliosis patients undergoing primary posterior spinal fusion from January 2008 - December 2012 (Group 1) and January 2014 - December 2018 (Group 2) were included, with 2013 excluded as a transition year. The primary outcome was incidence of surgical site infection within one yearcidence of surgical site infection in neuromuscular scoliosis patients decreased significantly (16.1% versus 4.4%) after the implementation of the strategies mentioned in the 2013 Best Practice Guideline. Further studies are required to continue to decrease the incidence in this high-risk population.Level of Evidence 3.

    15,850 adults with SRDs from the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey (MEPS) (2008-2015) were analyzed. The MEPS Medical Conditions files were used to identify SRDs based on ICD-9 codes. Frequencies and percentages of sample demographics were calculated. HCE was measured as total direct payments for care provided during the survey year. A composite PS score was constructed using a 0-10 rating of their healthcare providers combined with the frequency in which patients felt they were listened to, were given understandable explanations, were respected, and were given enough time. Mean unadjusted HCE were calculated for each year and by quartile of PS. A two-part model consisting of a probit model and subsequent generalized linear model with gamma distribution was performed, adjusting for relevant covariates.

  • In this work, novel types of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared from citric acid and glycine (GLY) as precursors through a simple pyrolysis method. The GLY-CDs showed strong fluorescence with a fluorescence quantum yield as high as 33.34% and good water solubility. The fluorescence of GLY-CDs could be selectively quenched by iron(III) ion (Fe3+ ) resulting in the non-fluorescent complex. Due to the high affinity of Fe3+ to adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP), the fluorescence of the GLY-CDs in GLY-CDs-Fe3+ could be recovered by ATP. Thereby, quantitatively fluorescent turn-on detection of ATP could be achieved. The fluorescence recovery ratio was linearly proportional to the concentration of ATP with a detection limit as low as 15.0 nM, indicating the CDs have high sensitivity. The GLY-CDs were successfully employed in the detection of ATP in serum and cell lysates.Elucidating the chromatin dynamics that orchestrate embryogenesis is a fundamental question in developmental biology. Here, we exploit position effects on expression as an indicator of chromatin activity and infer the chromatin activity landscape in every lineaged cell during Caenorhabditis elegans early embryogenesis. Systems-level analyses reveal that chromatin activity distinguishes cellular states and correlates with fate patterning in the early embryos. As cell lineage unfolds, chromatin activity diversifies in a lineage-dependent manner, with switch-like changes accompanying anterior-posterior fate asymmetry and characteristic landscapes being established in different cell lineages. Upon tissue differentiation, cellular chromatin from distinct lineages converges according to tissue types but retains stable memories of lineage history, contributing to intra-tissue cell heterogeneity. However, the chromatin landscapes of cells organized in a left-right symmetric pattern are predetermined to be analogous in early progenitors so as to pre-set equivalent states. Finally, genome-wide analysis identifies many regions exhibiting concordant chromatin activity changes that mediate the co-regulation of functionally related genes during differentiation. Collectively, our study reveals the developmental and genomic dynamics of chromatin activity at the single-cell level.

    Human nasal biopsies and human nasal epithelial cells (HNEC) from healthy volunteers and patients with AR were cultured in the presence of SP. Epithelial expression of TLR4, neutral endopeptidase (NEP) and neurokinin 1 (NK1) were evaluated with flow cytometry and/or quantitative polymerase chain reaction after 30min to 24h. The effect of SP on nasal lipopolysaccharide-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) release was investigated.

    SP stimulation of tissue from healthy volunteers resulted in a transient increase of the TLR4 expression, whereas stimulation of AR patient-derived material led to a delayed and prolonged upregulation of TLR4. This resulted in a significant limitation of SCIT use and in the search of other routes of administration, among which sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) showed the best balance between efficacy and safety. Data from controlled studies suggest that tablets-related anaphylaxis is an uncommon event. However, in the Eudravigilance (European database of suspected adverse drug reactions from Europe) we found reports of life-threatening events or severe local reactions under SLIT increasing over the last few years.     The MEGA (MEchanism underlying the Genesis and evolution of Asthma) project is a multicenter cohort study carried out in eight Spanish hospitals, gathering clinical, physiological, and molecular data from patients with asthma and multimorbidities in order to gain insight into the different physiopathological mechanisms involved in this disorder.

    We report the baseline clinical and physiological characteristics and biomarker measures of adult participants in the project with the aim of better understanding the natural history and underlying mechanisms of asthma as well as the associated multimorbidities across different levels of severity. We carried out a detailed clinical examination, pulmonary function testing, measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), blood counts, induced sputum, skin ***** tests, chest computed tomography scan, asthma questionnaires, and multimorbidity assessment in 512 asthmatic patients.

    When compared to patients with milder disease, severe asthmatic patients showed greater presence of symptoms, more exacerbations, lower asthma control, increased airflow obstruction, and higher frequency of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, severe rhinitis, anxiety and depression, gastroesophageal reflux, and bronchiectasis.

All patients diagnosed with oral cancer in Taiwan, between 2012 and 2014, and who underwent surgical intervention were selected for the study. The tissue was further processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC) for 21 target proteins. Analyses were performed using the results of IHC staining, clinicopathological characteristics, and survival outcomes. Novel stratifications with a hierarchical clustering approach and combinations were applied using the Cox proportional hazard regression model. Of the 163 participants recruited, 102 patients were analyzed, and OCPRS successfully identified patients with different progression-free survival (PFS) profiles in high-risk (53 subjects) versus low-risk (49 subjects) groups (p = 0.012). OCPRS was composed of cytoplasmic PLK1, phosphoMet, and SGK2 IHC staining. After controlling for the influence of clinicopathological features, high-risk patients were 2.33 times more likely to experience cancer progression than low-risk patients (p = 0.020). In the multivariate model, patients with extranodal extension (HR = 2.66, p = 0.045) demonstrated a significantly increased risk for disease progression. Risk stratification with OCPRS provided distinct PFS groups for patients with oral cancer after surgical intervention. Radiomics could provide quantitative data, extracted from medical images, that could reflect microenvironmental tumor heterogeneity, which might be a useful information for treatment tailoring. Thus, it could be helpful to overcome the main limitations of traditional tumor biopsy, often affected by bias in tumor sampling, lack of repeatability and possible procedure complications. This quantitative approach has been widely investigated as a non-invasive and an objective imaging biomarker in cancer patients; however, it is not applied as a clinical routine due to several limitations related to lack of standardization and validation of images acquisition protocols, features segmentation, extraction, processing, and data analysis. This field is in continuous evolution in each type of cancer, and results support the idea that in the future Radiomics might be a reliable application in oncologic imaging.   • Enzymatic hydrolysis and glycosylation were successively applied to modify soybean protein isolate (SPI) and rheological and textural properties of acid-induced SPI gel added with the obtained SPI hydrolysates and their glycosylated products were then investigated. The incorporation of SPI hydrolysates decreased the elastic modulus (G') and hardness of SPI gel, which might be related to the random aggregation between SPI hydrolysates and native SPI molecules via hydrophobic interactions. In addition, as the molecular weight of SPI hydrolysates decreased, the reduction in G' and hardness became more significant. Although glycosylation of SPI hydrolysates weakened the adverse effects of hydrolysates on the SPI gel formation to some extent, the glycosylated SPI hydrolysates were still unable to improve the gel quality compared with the control. However, results of this research may provide important information for understanding the influencing mechanism of SPI hydrolysates and their glycosylated products on the formation of SPI gel.Starch based food packaging has been receiving increasing attention. However, the inherent poor properties of starch restrict its practical applications in the versatile material science field. In this study, a fast, simple, and environmentally friendly route to construct polyfunctional starch/tea polyphenols nanofibrous films (STNFs) by one-step temperature-assisted electrospinning was developed. The effects of introduction of tea polyphenols (TP) on the mechanical and antioxidant activity of STNFs were comprehensively investigated. Results of ABTS·+ free radical scavenging assay showed that the antioxidant activity of STNFs was endowed by addition of TP with optimum mechanical properties confirmed by tensile test. More interestingly, the hydrophobicity of STNFs was improved dramatically with increasing cross-linking time as indicated by water contact angle (WCA) measurement showing no effect on the antioxidant activity of the films. The results of this work offer a major step forward to promote functional starch-based materials for sustainable application in food packaging.Fishing communities in the Mediterranean Sea face challenges in dealing with Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) ecosystem-based management measures aimed at reducing fishing effort and implementing partial closures of fisheries. The Participatory Action Research method is used here as a "pilot experience" to gather reactions from fishers, scientists and fisheries managers to the Western Mediterranean Multi-Annual Demersal Fisheries Plan (WM MAP) by identifying needs and concerns, but also alternatives to maintain the viability of the fishery. The data gathering process consisted on a structured questionnaire administered during a workshop to 40 stakeholders involved in Spanish fisheries in the Mediterranean, followed by an open discussion session. The results show that fishers disagree with the new regulations, which they perceive as yet another layer of restrictive regulations for an industry that faces major challenges and currently has low profitability, whereas scientists tended to agree more with the WM MAP than the administration or the fishers. Nevertheless, all stakeholders agree that the values of the cultural heritage of fisheries and the exploration of alternative marketing systems should balance the productivity-based approach to fisheries policies followed so far, that have shown signs of failure. According to stakeholder perceptions, this would improve the economic and social viability of fisheries, as well as highlight the value of fishing activity and its social prestige. Vegetation degradation occurred in urban areas, but there was an improvement in vegetation in the urban centers of 2000. In urban agglomerations, the shift of the center of gravity of construction land can affect the direction of the transfer of NDVI cold spots or hot spots. Urbanization intensity in most urban agglomerations was negatively correlated with vegetation cover and showed a downward trend along the intensity gradient. Generalized Additive Models (GAM) were developed with respect to inter-annual variations, seasonal cycles, holiday effects, diurnal profile, and the non-linear influences of meteorological factors to quantitatively differentiate the lockdown effects and meteorology impacts on concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matters (PM2.5) at 34 sites in the Beijing area. The results revealed that lockdown measures caused large reductions while meteorology offset a large fraction of the decrease in surface concentrations. GAM estimates showed that in February, the control measures led to average NO2 reductions of 19 μg/m3 and average PM2.5 reductions of 12 μg/m3. At the same time, meteorology was estimated to contribute about 12 μg/m3 increase in NO2, thereby offsetting most of the reductions as well as an increase of 30 μg/m3 in PM2.

Generalized Additive Models (GAM) were developed with respect to inter-annual variations, seasonal cycles, holiday effects, diurnal profile, and the non-linear influences of meteorological factors to quantitatively differentiate the lockdown effects and meteorology impacts on concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matters (PM2.5) at 34 sites in the Beijing area. The results revealed that lockdown measures caused large reductions while meteorology offset a large fraction of the decrease in surface concentrations. GAM estimates showed that in February, the control measures led to average NO2 reductions of 19 μg/m3 and average PM2.5 reductions of 12 μg/m3. At the same time, meteorology was estimated to contribute about 12 μg/m3 increase in NO2, thereby offsetting most of the reductions as well as an increase of 30 μg/m3 in PM2.

    We report the case of a 57-year-old female with refractory variceal bleeding that occurred six years after a percutaneous liver biopsy. As part of the workup for placement of Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt, a computed tomography hepatic arteriography was performed. This revealed a large arterioportal fistula in left lobe of liver. Variceal bleeding was controlled following successful embolisation of the arterioportal fistula.

    Persistent intrahepatic arterioportal fistula can result in portal hypertension and variceal bleeding. This is a rare complication of percutaneous liver biopsy that warrants consideration as an aetiology of portal hypertension with variceal bleeding.     We report a case of a 37-year-old woman with left breast benign phyllodes tumour, which started to grow very fast during pregnancy. The tumour was too big for breast-conserving surgery and it was necessary to remove the whole left breast. Patient underwent successful nipple-skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate silicone implant reconstruction.
