Based on Endsley's (in Proceedings of the IEEE 1988 national aerospace and electronics conference, IEEE, 1988, 1995) situation awareness concept, we hypothesized that people attending the hospital with different hygiene schema would react differently when faced with HAI-related triggers. Based on a survey of 208 respondents, the results support the hypotheses, and showed a significant moderating effect of hygiene-sensitivity on the relationship between the staffs' hospital acquired infection-related proactive behavior and avoidance tendencies among hospital visitors. Theoretical as well as practical recommendations are discussed.The objective of this research was to assess that knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sexual heath among rural college students in Nebraska. We administered an electronic survey (n = 125) that was adapted from the YRBSS and National College Health Assessment to compare results to national estimates. Results show condom use was below the national average (38.4% vs. 54.1%) during last time of having sexual intercourse. Only half (51%) of rural college students had received the HPV vaccine, and significantly less among males (18%) compared to females (60%). 37% of participants strongly agreed/agreed they felt their parents would find out if they had an STI screening, and even more felt their social group would find out (42%). Nearly all (92%) of the participants strongly agreed/agreed that they would tell their partner if they noticed that they had symptoms of an STI; although, over half (60%) of the participants strongly agreed/agreed that they thought they could tell if there was a change in their body indicating after contracting a STI, 33% did not know that STIs can have no symptoms, and over half (52%) almost never/never get STI screening when they had new partners. There was a significant positive association between with highest level of sexual health education and composite knowledge scores. The results show that sexual health among rural college students is an important, but understudied, health disparity. Online and college-oriented interventions could be used to help bridge the gap of sexual health education in states that do not mandate sexual health education, like Nebraska.Purpose To compare pregnancy outcomes in women with pPROM and a cervical cerclage in whom the cerclage was removed within 24 h and those in whom the cerclage was retained in situ. Methods A two-center retrospective cohort study of women with a singleton gestation with pPROM at 7 days (29.8% vs. 8.7%, p = 0.04; aOR 7.0, 95% CI 2.5-19.6) compared with women in whom cerclage was removed. Furthermore, chorioamnionitis rate was lower in the cerclage retention group compared to cerclage removal group (aOR 0.7, 95% CI 0.5-1.0). There were no differences between the groups in early neonatal sepsis, severe brain injury, or composite neonatal outcome. Conclusion In women with pPROM and cervical cerclage, retention of cerclage may be associated with a longer latency period, and a lower chorioamnionitis rate, without an associated increase in the risk of neonatal infectious morbidity. Clinical records of all consecutive pregnant women with a prenatal diagnosis of duplication of gallbladder, who were referred to our Centers were included in this study. Postnatal magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (****) 3D and postnatal neonatal abdominal ultrasound scan were offered soon after birth to confirm the diagnosis of double gallbladder. The systematic review was conducted using electronic databases from inception of each database through December 2019. Results Five studies, including a total of seven cases, were identified as relevant and included in the systematic review. Gestational age at diagnosis ranged from 20 to 32 weeks of gestation. Associated findings were reported in only one case, where the fetus presented with a left-sided gallbladder, and bilateral renal agenesis with Potter sequence. None of the included cases reported abnormal karyotype. Our cases series included nine cases (0.03%) of double gallbladder with postnatal confirmation, with an overall incidence of this anomaly of 0.03%.Associated findings were reported in only two cases, one with IUGR and omphalocele, that opted for I-TOP, and one with single umbilical artery. Except for the I-TOP, neonatal outcome was favorable in all cases. Conclusions Duplication of the gallbladder is a very rare malformation with only seven cases reported in the literature diagnosed prenatally. This anomaly is not associated with abnormal karyotype, and the neonatal outcome is favorable if there are no other associated abnormalities.

  • Resistive switching crossbars are predicted to serve the programmable logic and neuromorphic circuits for next-generation memory devices, given the understanding of the operation mechanisms. This protocol reveals the switching mechanism in a reliable, timely, and cost-effective way in any type of resistive switching materials, and thereby predicts the device's applicability.Conventional histological analysis and cell culture systems are insufficient to simulate in vivo physiological and pathological dynamics completely. Multiphoton microscopy (MPM) has become one of the most popular imaging modalities for biomedical study at cellular levels in vivo, advantages include high resolution, deep tissue penetration and minimal phototoxicity. We have designed an MPM imaging platform with a customized mouse eye holder and a stereotaxic stage for imaging ocular surface in vivo. Dual fluorescent protein reporter mouse enables visualization of cell nuclei, cell membranes, nerve fibers, and capillaries within the ocular surface. In addition to multiphoton fluorescence signals, acquiring second harmonic generation (SHG) simultaneously allows for the characterization of collagenous stromal architecture. This platform can be employed for intravital imaging with accurate positioning across the entire ocular surface, including cornea and conjunctiva.Human primary keratinocytes are often used as in vitro models for studies on epidermal differentiation and related diseases. Methods have been reported for in vitro differentiation of keratinocytes cultured in two-dimensional (2D) submerged manners using various induction conditions. Described here is a procedure for 2D in vitro keratinocyte differentiation method by contact inhibition and subsequent molecular characterization by RNA-seq. In brief, keratinocytes are grown in defined keratinocyte medium supplemented with growth factors until they are fully confluent. Differentiation is induced by close contacts between the keratinocytes and further stimulated by excluding growth factors in the medium. Using RNA-seq analyses, it is shown that both 1) differentiated keratinocytes exhibit distinct molecular signatures during differentiation and 2) the dynamic gene expression pattern largely resembles cells during epidermal stratification. As for comparison to normal keratinocyte differentiation, keratinocytes carrying mutations of the transcription factor p63 exhibit altered morphology and molecular signatures, consistent with their differentiation defects. In conclusion, this protocol details the steps for 2D in vitro keratinocyte differentiation and its molecular characterization, with an emphasis on bioinformatic analysis of RNA-seq data. Because RNA extraction and RNA-seq procedures have been well-documented, it is not the focus of this protocol. The CogStack platform incorporates a set of services that allow for full-text search of clinical data, lifespan-inclusive, real-time calculation of psychosis risk, early risk-alerting to clinicians, and the visual monitoring of patients over time. Our method includes 1) ingestion and synchronization of data from multiple sources into the CogStack platform, 2) implementation of a risk calculator, whose algorithm was previously developed and validated, for timely computation of a patient's risk of psychosis, 3) creation of interactive visualizations and dashboards to monitor patients' health status over time, and 4) building automated alerting systems to ensure that clinicians are notified of patients at-risk, so that appropriate actions can be pursued. This is the first ever study that has developed and implemented a similar detection and alerting system in clinical routine for early detection of psychosis.Certain nitrogen-containing compounds can contribute to fuel instability during storage. Hence, detection and characterization of these compounds is crucial. There are significant challenges to overcome when measuring trace compounds in a complex matrix such as fuels. Background interferences and matrix effects can create limitations to routine analytical instrumentation, such as GC-MS. In order to facilitate specific and quantitative measurements of trace nitrogen compounds in fuels, a nitrogen-specific detector is ideal. In this method, a nitrogen chemiluminescence detector (NCD) is used to detect nitrogen compounds in fuels. NCD utilizes a nitrogen-specific reaction that does not involve the hydrocarbon background. Two-dimensional (GCxGC) gas chromatography is a powerful characterization technique as it provides superior separation capabilities to one-dimensional gas chromatography methods. When GCxGC is paired with a NCD, the problematic nitrogen compounds found in fuels can be extensively characterized without background interference. The method presented in this manuscript details the process for measuring different nitrogen-containing compound classes in fuels with little sample preparation. Overall, this GCxGC-NCD method has been shown to be a valuable tool to enhance the understanding of the chemical composition of nitrogen-containing compounds in fuels and their impact on fuel stability. Baseline overprotection among G2 mothers was related to baseline internalizing problems among the third generation (G3). Sixty-two patients with OCD and 40 healthy controls matched by gender, age and IQ, completed a computerized dot-probe task where two pictures (with symmetry or cleaning related content) were shown. Baseline overprotection among G2 mothers was related to baseline internalizing problems among the third generation (G3). More importantly, substance use among G2 mothers moderated the link between the rate of change in overprotection among G2 mothers and the rate of change in internalizing problems among G3 children. Methods A total of 60 patients were included in the study. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), MRS, and elastography in order to quantify hepatosteatosis. MRI and MRS imaging studies were performed using MR Dixon and high-speed T2-corrected multiple-echo 1H-MRS sequence (HISTO) sequences, respectively, in order to calculate proton density fat fraction (PDFF) values. Results The mean MRI-PDFF value with the MRS region of interest (ROI) was found as 9.4% ± 12.1%. The mean MRS-PDFF was found as 8.9% ± 11.3%. No statistically significant difference was found between MRS-PDFF and MRI-PDFF values measured in ROI (p less then 0.005). The correlation between MRS-PDFF and MRI-PDFF was examined with Spearman's correlation analysis. Accordingly, there was an excellent correlation between MRS and MRI values measured in ROI (r ≥ 0.8, p less then 0.001). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were calculated as 96%, 100%, 89.5%, and 92.6%, respectively, for MRI-PDFF in predicting hepatic steatosis for the same ROI localization with MRS. The optimum cut-off value of MRS-PDFF in predicting hepatic steatosis was found as 5.3% using the same ROI localization with MRS. Conclusion The results of this study indicated an excellent correlation between MRI-PDFF and MRS-PDFF. The multi-echo Dixon MRI technique seems a promising alternative method in the detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. On arrival, he received six units of blood type O transfusion and vitamin K in an emergency room (ER) due to hemorrhagic shock. His systolic blood pressure temporarily increased to 100 mmHg, and he underwent traumatic pan scan revealing occipital fracture, cerebral contusion, and cervical and multiple left rib fractures with left-dominant bilateral hemothorax. He re-entered a shock state after the examination and underwent transfusion again, but he then entered cardiac arrest. He underwent damage control surgery in the ER and obtained spontaneous circulation. The postoperative course was eventful, but he eventually obtained a survival outcome. Damage control surgery may be beneficial, even in cases of severe thoracic blunt trauma; however, postoperative infections may cause severe problems. Objectives To investigate the immediate effects of forearm and/or wrist orthoses on outcome measures of pain and function in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/blu-222.html Design Systematic review METHODS Four electronic databases were searched to identify randomised controlled trials reporting the immediate effects of forearm and/or wrist orthoses on pain and function in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy. The quality of evidence was rated from high to very low, using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) for the primary outcomes. Where possible, standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to compare post measures between forearm and/or wrist orthoses and control/placebo conditions. Results The search revealed 1965 studies, of which, seven randomised crossover trials were included. Using the GRADE approach there was low quality evidence revealing a significant decrease in pain during contraction (SMD range -0.65 to -0.83) with forearm orthoses compared to a control/placebo condition. Low quality evidence revealed improvements in pain-free grip strength with the use of a forearm orthosis (SMD range 0.24-0.38), but not maximal grip strength (SMD range 0.14-0.15). Low quality evidence revealed a static wrist orthosis did not improve pain-free grip strength (SMD -0.08) or maximal grip strength (SMD -0.22). Conclusion There is low quality evidence that forearm orthoses can immediately reduce pain during contraction and improve pain-free grip strength but not maximal grip strength in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy.Background Greater Trochanteric Pain syndrome (GTPS) is a condition causing lateral hip pain, which can be both persistent and debilitating. Data suggests that NHS patients with GTPS often have complex presentations with greater risk of developing persistent pain. No research to date has looked to understand the lived experience of patients with GTPS. Objectives This data may help inform a programme of intervention development for testing in a future randomised controlled trial. Hence, this qualitative study aimed to provide insight into the experiences and perceptions of patients suffering with GTPS. Design Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. Methods Ten patients diagnosed with GTPS in consultant-led clinic at one NHS Hospital. Patients were identified from the physiotherapy waiting list and approached via a postal letter. Once informed consent was gained, semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted, transcribed verbatim and analysed using the Framework Method. Results Data were analysed with reference to five pre-determined themes (1) living with persistent pain; (2) understanding the problem and pain; (3) experiences of previous treatment; (4) beliefs about activity and exercise; (5) the future. Conclusion The participants with GTPS, interviewed in this study commonly suffered from debilitating pain, affecting them during activity and at rest. They were confused about the diagnoses they were given and the meaning of their pain in relation to activity. Furthermore, participants were often either uncertain or pessimistic about their potential to recover. Objective To systematically review the prevalence of psychological factors reported in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy; and to determine the association between psychological factors and pain, function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Study design Systematic review METHODS Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to June 2019. Studies that investigated patients with signs and symptoms suggestive of rotator cuff tendinopathy, and reported psychological variables and patient-reported outcome measures including pain, shoulder function or disability and quality of life. Results A total of 14 studies were included. Our results showed that 22.8%-26.2% of patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy reported depression; 23% reported anxiety; and 70.2%-89% of patients reported sleep disturbance or insomnia. Overall, nine psychological factors were identified to be associated with pain, function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Low-to-moderate quality of evidence suggests that various psychological factors are associated with pain, function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy CONCLUSION This review identified various psychological factors may affect the pain level, shoulder function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy, and the causal relationship warrants future high-quality prospective studies.An external focus of attention has consistently been associated with improved balance (Wulf, 2013). Recent work has considered whether changes in postural control entropy, a measure of repeated movement patterns, could be a factor influencing this benefit. Rheaet al. (2019) reported that during quiet standing sample entropy when using an external focus was increased relative to baseline, whereas an internal focus did not differ from baseline. External and internal focus conditions did not differ from each other, but the authors speculated this difference may emerge with more complex balance tasks. Objectives To investigate the immediate effects of forearm and/or wrist orthoses on outcome measures of pain and function in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/blu-222.html Design Systematic review METHODS Four electronic databases were searched to identify randomised controlled trials reporting the immediate effects of forearm and/or wrist orthoses on pain and function in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy. The quality of evidence was rated from high to very low, using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) for the primary outcomes. Where possible, standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to compare post measures between forearm and/or wrist orthoses and control/placebo conditions. Results The search revealed 1965 studies, of which, seven randomised crossover trials were included. Using the GRADE approach there was low quality evidence revealing a significant decrease in pain during contraction (SMD range -0.65 to -0.83) with forearm orthoses compared to a control/placebo condition. Low quality evidence revealed improvements in pain-free grip strength with the use of a forearm orthosis (SMD range 0.24-0.38), but not maximal grip strength (SMD range 0.14-0.15). Low quality evidence revealed a static wrist orthosis did not improve pain-free grip strength (SMD -0.08) or maximal grip strength (SMD -0.22). Conclusion There is low quality evidence that forearm orthoses can immediately reduce pain during contraction and improve pain-free grip strength but not maximal grip strength in individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy.Background Greater Trochanteric Pain syndrome (GTPS) is a condition causing lateral hip pain, which can be both persistent and debilitating. Data suggests that NHS patients with GTPS often have complex presentations with greater risk of developing persistent pain. No research to date has looked to understand the lived experience of patients with GTPS. Objectives This data may help inform a programme of intervention development for testing in a future randomised controlled trial. Hence, this qualitative study aimed to provide insight into the experiences and perceptions of patients suffering with GTPS. Design Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. Methods Ten patients diagnosed with GTPS in consultant-led clinic at one NHS Hospital. Patients were identified from the physiotherapy waiting list and approached via a postal letter. Once informed consent was gained, semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted, transcribed verbatim and analysed using the Framework Method. Results Data were analysed with reference to five pre-determined themes (1) living with persistent pain; (2) understanding the problem and pain; (3) experiences of previous treatment; (4) beliefs about activity and exercise; (5) the future. Conclusion The participants with GTPS, interviewed in this study commonly suffered from debilitating pain, affecting them during activity and at rest. They were confused about the diagnoses they were given and the meaning of their pain in relation to activity. Furthermore, participants were often either uncertain or pessimistic about their potential to recover. Objective To systematically review the prevalence of psychological factors reported in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy; and to determine the association between psychological factors and pain, function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Study design Systematic review METHODS Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to June 2019. Studies that investigated patients with signs and symptoms suggestive of rotator cuff tendinopathy, and reported psychological variables and patient-reported outcome measures including pain, shoulder function or disability and quality of life. Results A total of 14 studies were included. Our results showed that 22.8%-26.2% of patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy reported depression; 23% reported anxiety; and 70.2%-89% of patients reported sleep disturbance or insomnia. Overall, nine psychological factors were identified to be associated with pain, function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Low-to-moderate quality of evidence suggests that various psychological factors are associated with pain, function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy CONCLUSION This review identified various psychological factors may affect the pain level, shoulder function and quality of life in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy, and the causal relationship warrants future high-quality prospective studies.An external focus of attention has consistently been associated with improved balance (Wulf, 2013). Recent work has considered whether changes in postural control entropy, a measure of repeated movement patterns, could be a factor influencing this benefit. Rheaet al. (2019) reported that during quiet standing sample entropy when using an external focus was increased relative to baseline, whereas an internal focus did not differ from baseline. External and internal focus conditions did not differ from each other, but the authors speculated this difference may emerge with more complex balance tasks. The purpose of the present study was to determine if sample entropy and standard deviation of angular displacement differed when balancing on a stability platform while using an external, internal, or holistic focus.   • We first demonstrated the ability of the fabricated diagnostic devices to detect DNA-based plant viruses from an infected tomato crop based on the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method. Moreover, we demonstrated the simultaneous detection of RNA-based plant viruses, which can infect cucurbits, by using the reverse transcription LAMP (RT-LAMP) method. The multiplex RT-LAMP assays revealed that multiple RNA viruses extracted from diseased cucumber leaves were successfully detected within 60 min, without any cross-contamination between reaction microchambers, on our diagnostic device.Five Korean blueberries (''Nelson'', ''Duke '', ''Bluejay '', ''Toro'', and ''Elliot '') were harvested at two maturity stages (unripe and ripe) to evaluate fruit quality and antioxidant activities. The Hunter L, a, and b color of ripe blueberries was lower than that of unripe fruit. Soluble solid concentration (SSC) and pH increased, and titratable acidity (TA) and firmness decreased as the blueberries matured. The ripe blueberry fruits showed a higher SSC/TA ratio than the unripe fruits. Although total anthocyanin, flavonoids, phenolics content, and antioxidant activity were higher in ripe blueberries than in unripe fruit, the unripe fruit had higher acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition activities than ripe fruit in all cultivars. Total antioxidant activity was highly correlated with total flavonoids and phenolics. The relationships between the total antioxidant activity and the AChE or BChE inhibitory activity are negative. We conducted three focus groups following a semi-structured question guide. The data were analyzed by content analysis using the software MAXQDA. In total, 18 paramedics (mean age 33 years, male n = 14) participated in the study. Paramedics are faced with complex issues when transporting NHRs to hospital. They mainly reported on structural reasons (e.g., understaffing or lacking availability of physicians), which led to the initiation of an emergency call. Handovers were perceived as poorly organized because required transfer information (e.g., medication lists, advance directives (ADs)) were incomplete or nursing staff was insufficiently prepared. Hospital transfers were considered as (potentially) avoidable in case of urinary catheter complications, exsiccosis/infections and falls. Legal uncertainties among all involved professional groups (nurses, physicians, dispatchers, and paramedics) seemed to be a relevant trigger for hospital transfers.   • Introduction Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and is the leading cause of cancer death. Smoking is a major contributor to the pathogenesis of lung cancer. Cytochrome P450 2A6 (CYP2A6) is responsible for the metabolic activation of most tobacco carcinogens. CYP2A6 genetic polymorphism can cause variations in the human metabolism of xenobiotics. We performed this meta-analysis to determine the association between whole-gene CYP2A6 deletion polymorphism (CYP2A6*4) and lung cancer risk. Methods The PubMed, SAGE, Science Direct, the Cochrane Library and Ovid databases were searched for observational studies before October 2018. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). Results Nine case-control studies involving 4385 lung cancer cases and 4142 controls were included in the analysis. The random-effects model was used to combine results from individual studies. The pooled odds ratio was 0.39 (95% CI 0.27-0.56). There was no heterogeneity across studies (χ2=2.49, p=0.96, I2=0%). Conclusions Current evidence from the case-control studies suggests that the CYP2A6 whole-gene deletion polymorphism decreases the risk of lung cancer. Further research is needed to identify any potential confounding factors that may impact this association.Introduction Province-specific initiatives are at the forefront of tobacco control but limited studies have provided province-specific assessment of smoking-attributable cancer burden in China. Methods We estimated the fraction of total and site-specific cancer mortality attributable to tobacco smoking in 31 provinces in mainland China. The population attributable fractions (PAFs) for cancer deaths due to smoking were calculated by Levin's formula using province-specific smoking prevalence data around 1998 (assuming a 15-year latency time) and relative risks from cohort studies and meta-analyses. The 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of PAFs were calculated by a Delta method. Cancer deaths were abstracted from cancer registry data of the 31 provinces in mainland China in 2013. Results Overall, smoking contributed to a total of 421566 cancer deaths in mainland China in 2013 (19.46% of all cancer deaths), with 400701 of these deaths occurring in men (29.34%) and 20865 (2.61%) in women. The population attributable fractions ranged from 15.56% (95% CI 9.12-21.82%) in Tibet to 35.09% (95% CI 25.68-45.83%) in Guizhou among men, and from 0.28% (95% CI 0.00-0.64%) in Hainan to 10.44% (95% CI 4.86-16.32%) in Jilin among women. Cancers of lung and liver were the two main smoking-attributable cancers for both men and women. This study aims to investigate whether tobacco influences expenditure patterns within Ghanaian households. Methods We estimate a demand system of quadratic conditional Engel curves for a set of twelve groups of commodities using the 2012/2013 Ghana Living Standards Survey. Unlike previous studies we use the GMM 3SLS estimator, which provides more efficient parameter estimates due to heteroskedastic errors inherent in cross-sectional datasets of this nature. Results The results show that Ghanaian households that spend on tobacco are more likely to spend also on alcohol, recreation, transport and communications, but less on food, housing, and health needs. Conclusions Tobacco expenditure, through its 'crowding-in' effects on alcohol and 'crowding-out' effects on food and health expenditure worsens household welfare in Ghana.Introduction The Global Youth Tobacco Survey's findings have been used to support Ghana's tobacco control legislation, monitor tobacco use among the youth and also used in meeting various Articles of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). These Articles include Article 8 (Protection for exposure to tobacco smoke); Article 12 (Education, communication, training and public awareness); Article 13 (Tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship); Article 14 (Demand reduction measures concerning tobacco dependence and cessation); and Article 16 (Sales to and by minors). Among the four waves of GYTS in Ghana, the 2017 GYTS was the first to assess waterpipe smoking, through optional questions included in the GYTS questionnaire. We assessed sex, age and regional differentials in waterpipe smoking among the youth in Ghana, and also explored the association between the use of other tobacco products and waterpipe use. Methods The GYTS employs a standardized methodology with to half (46.9%) of the current waterpipe users smoked at home. Conclusions Waterpipe use, particularly among the female student population, represents an emerging tobacco epidemic and hence deserves immediate attention from authorities. This study revealed that waterpipe is being used among Junior High students in Ghana. Education on the health implications of waterpipe use should be intensified among the youth, to help minimize its use and to prevent its associated health harms.The aim of this study was to identify macro-level determinants of early work exit and investigate whether the effects of these determinants differ across educational groups. We used data from the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (2011-2013) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) (2010/2011-2012/2013) as well as macro-level data and included 10,584 participants in 14 European countries. We used logistic multilevel analyses to examine educational differences in macro-level determinants of early work exit. Macro-level determinants were minimum unemployment replacement rates, expenditure on active labour market policies (aimed to help the unemployed find work) and passive labour market policies (unemployment and early retirement benefits), employment protection legislation (costs involved in dismissing individuals), unemployment rates, statutory pension age and implicit tax on continued work. We found low-educated workers to be more at risk of early work exit than higher educated workers.

However, there is no published study investigating these effects in the context of Ghana, a country where tobacco consumption is expected to increase in the future. This study aims to investigate whether tobacco influences expenditure patterns within Ghanaian households. Methods We estimate a demand system of quadratic conditional Engel curves for a set of twelve groups of commodities using the 2012/2013 Ghana Living Standards Survey. Unlike previous studies we use the GMM 3SLS estimator, which provides more efficient parameter estimates due to heteroskedastic errors inherent in cross-sectional datasets of this nature. Results The results show that Ghanaian households that spend on tobacco are more likely to spend also on alcohol, recreation, transport and communications, but less on food, housing, and health needs. Conclusions Tobacco expenditure, through its 'crowding-in' effects on alcohol and 'crowding-out' effects on food and health expenditure worsens household welfare in Ghana.Introduction The Global Youth Tobacco Survey's findings have been used to support Ghana's tobacco control legislation, monitor tobacco use among the youth and also used in meeting various Articles of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). These Articles include Article 8 (Protection for exposure to tobacco smoke); Article 12 (Education, communication, training and public awareness); Article 13 (Tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship); Article 14 (Demand reduction measures concerning tobacco dependence and cessation); and Article 16 (Sales to and by minors). Among the four waves of GYTS in Ghana, the 2017 GYTS was the first to assess waterpipe smoking, through optional questions included in the GYTS questionnaire. We assessed sex, age and regional differentials in waterpipe smoking among the youth in Ghana, and also explored the association between the use of other tobacco products and waterpipe use. Methods The GYTS employs a standardized methodology with to half (46.9%) of the current waterpipe users smoked at home. Conclusions Waterpipe use, particularly among the female student population, represents an emerging tobacco epidemic and hence deserves immediate attention from authorities. This study revealed that waterpipe is being used among Junior High students in Ghana. Education on the health implications of waterpipe use should be intensified among the youth, to help minimize its use and to prevent its associated health harms.The aim of this study was to identify macro-level determinants of early work exit and investigate whether the effects of these determinants differ across educational groups. We used data from the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (2011-2013) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) (2010/2011-2012/2013) as well as macro-level data and included 10,584 participants in 14 European countries. We used logistic multilevel analyses to examine educational differences in macro-level determinants of early work exit. Macro-level determinants were minimum unemployment replacement rates, expenditure on active labour market policies (aimed to help the unemployed find work) and passive labour market policies (unemployment and early retirement benefits), employment protection legislation (costs involved in dismissing individuals), unemployment rates, statutory pension age and implicit tax on continued work. We found low-educated workers to be more at risk of early work exit than higher educated workers.

  • RESULTS We identified a complete and consecutive cohort of 233 patients who were followed for a mean period of 36 (± 14) months. The 2-year cumulative incidence of revision surgery was 28%. Comparing the "restored" to the "non-restored" group, the overall revision rates were high in both groups. However, when adjusting for known cofounders in a multivariable proportional odds analysis, there was an almost fivefold increased odds of revision due to mechanical failure in the "non-restored" group (p = 0.036). CONCLUSION Surgical correction of ASD in accordance to the ideal Roussouly spine shape was correlated to a marked and significant decrease in risk of revision surgery due to mechanical failure. Three clusters were obtained applying K-means cluster analysis on symptoms' severity assessed via VAS. Cluster characteristics were compared using non-parametric tests. RESULTS Cluster 1 patients, with the least symptom burden, had a better quality of life, lower care dependency and were more willing to accept life-sustaining treatments than others. This study aims at analysing the correlation among morphological and metrical characteristics of frontal sinuses. Two hundred CT scans of patients equally divided between males and females were segmented through the ITK-SNAP software. Number of accessory septations, scalloping and supra-orbital cells, side asymmetry and superiority, breadth, height, length and volume were extracted from the frontal sinuses of each subject. A possible relationship among morphological and metrical features was analysed through Pearson's correlation test, Mann-Whitney test or chi-square test according to the type of compared data (p  less then  0.05). In general, a positive correlation was found for all comparisons among metrical measurements (breadth, height, depth and volume) and number of septations, scalloping and supra-orbital cells (p  less then  0.05), but not between the number of scalloping and supra-orbital cells. In addition, side of asymmetry was positively related with side of superiority of the upper profile of frontal sinuses (p  less then  0.05). This study proved that morphological and metrical characteristics of frontal sinuses are strictly related one with each other therefore, the coding systems based on these features should be applied with caution for personal identification, as the number of possible combinations is lower than reported by literature.

We now report an analysis from this study of the effect of dasotraline on body weight. METHOD Patients with moderate-to-severe BED, based on DSM-5 criteria, were randomized to 12 weeks of double-blind flexible-dose treatment with dasotraline (4-8 mg/d) vs. placebo. The primary efficacy outcome was number of binge-eating days/week. Mean change in body weight at Week 12 (assessed as a safety outcome) was analyzed by baseline body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) category. Inferential statistics were not performed. RESULTS The safety population consisted of 317 patients (female, 84%; mean age, 38.or dasotraline vs. placebo, consisted of decreased appetite (19.7% vs. 6.9%), decreased weight (12.1% vs. 0%), and increased weight (0.6% vs. 1.3%). METHODS Assessments included EQ-5D-5L utility score (0=equivalent to death to 1=perfect health); SDS total score (0=no impact to 30=highest impact); patient- and clinician-rated severity of possible TD in 4 body regions (0=none, 1=some, and 2=a lot; summary score, 0 to 8); and patient-rated impact of possible TD in 7 daily activities (0=none, 1=some, and 2=a lot; summary score, 0 to 14)in the full Cohort 2 (-0.021, P less then 0.001) and limited Cohort 2 (-0.024, P less then 0.001). A significant association was also found with patient rated severity in limited Cohort 2 (P less then 0.05), but not with clinician-rated severity. Similar results were found for SDS total score. CONCLUSIONS RE-KINECT patients were consistent in evaluating the severity and impact of TD, whether based on subjective assessments or standardized patient-reported instruments (EQ-5D-5L, SDS). Clinician-rated severity of TD may not always correlate with patient perceptions of the significance of TD. Patient self-assessments (focused on symptom impact) can be clinically relevant; incorporating such measures into everyday practice may provide a more comprehensive approach to TD assessment and management. METHODS Assessments included EQ-5D-5L utility score (0=equivalent to death to 1=perfect health); SDS total score (0=no impact to 30=highest impact); patient- and clinician-rated severity of possible TD in 4 body regions (0=none, 1=some, and 2=a lot; summary score, 0 to 8); and patient-rated impact of possible TD in 7 daily activities (0=none, 1=some, and 2=a lot; summary score, 0 to 14)in the full Cohort 2 (-0.021, P less then 0.001) and limited Cohort 2 (-0.024, P less then 0.001). A significant association was also found with patient rated severity in limited Cohort 2 (P less then 0.05), but not with clinician-rated severity. Similar results were found for SDS total score. CONCLUSIONS RE-KINECT patients were consistent in evaluating the severity and impact of TD, whether based on subjective assessments or standardized patient-reported instruments (EQ-5D-5L, SDS). Clinician-rated severity of TD may not always correlate with patient perceptions of the significance of TD. Patient self-assessments (focused on symptom impact) can be clinically relevant; incorporating such measures into everyday practice may provide a more comprehensive approach to TD assessment and management. Therefore, in the present study both MAAs were chemically isolated and structurally elucidated. The two new compounds exhibit absorption maxima of 324 nm. MAA 1 has a molecular weight of 467 and MAA 2 of 305, and the latter (MAA 2) was identified as N-(4,5-dihydroxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methoxy-3-oxocyclohex-1-en-1-yl)-N-methylserine using one- and two-dimensional 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. MAA 1 contains an additional sugar moiety. As trivial names for these two novel MAAs we suggest klebsormidin A and klebsormidin B. Different species from all previously described phylogenetic clades of Klebsormidiophyceae were chemically screened for their MAA composition in aqueous extracts using RP-HPLC and LC-MS. The novel klebsormidin A was present throughout all clades and hence could be suitable as a chemotaxonomic marker. Additionally, controlled UVR-exposure experiments with all investigated species showed that MAA biosynthesis and intracellular enrichment is strongly induced by short wavelengths, supporting the function of these compounds as natural UV-sunscreen as well as explaining the cosmopolitan distribution and ecological success of Interfilum and Klebsormidium in terrestrial habitats. Concerns have been raised about the possible connection between antibiotic use, causing microbiota disturbances, and the increase in allergic and autoimmune diseases observed during the last decades. To elucidate the putative connection between antibiotic use and immune regulation, we have assessed the effects of the antibiotic amoxicillin on immune regulation, protein uptake, and bacterial community structure in a Brown Norway rat model. Daily intra-gastric administration of amoxicillin resulted in an immediate and dramatic shift in fecal microbiota, characterized by a reduction of within sample (α) diversity, reduced variation between animals (β diversity), increased relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria, with concurrent reduction of Firmicutes, compared to a water control group. In the small intestine, amoxicillin also affected microbiota composition significantly, but in a different way than observed in feces. Thy bowel diseases and food allergies, our findings surprisingly indicated that amoxicillin-induced perturbation of the gut microbiota promotes acute immune regulation. We speculate that the observed increase in relative abundance of small intestinal regulatory T cells is partly mediated by immunomodulatory lipopolysaccharides derived from outgrowth of Gammaproteobacteria. Here, we showed that pretreatment of stationary-phase cells with an ATP synthase inhibitor, chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ), significantly reduced stationary-phase-redox activities and protein degradation, and yielded cells that were more susceptible to cell death when exposed to antibiotics in fresh media. Leveraging this knowledge, we developed an assay integrating a degradable fluorescent protein system and a small library, containing FDA-approved drugs and antibiotics, to detect medically relevant drugs that potentially target persister metabolism. We identified a subset of chemical inhibitors, including polymyxin B, poly-L-lysine and phenothiazine anti-psychotic drugs, that were able to reduce the persistence phenotype in Escherichia coli. These chemical inhibitors also reduced Pseudomonas aeruginosa persistence, potentially verifying the existence of similar mechanisms in a medically relevant organism.   • The pivotal role of viral proteases in virus replication has already been successfully exploited in several antiviral drug design campaigns. However, no efficient antivirals are currently available against flaviviral infections. In this study, we present lead-like small molecule inhibitors of the Zika Virus (ZIKV) NS2B-NS3 protease. Since only few nonpeptide competitive ligands are known, we take advantage of the high structural similarity with the West Nile Virus (WNV) NS2B-NS3 protease. A comparative modeling approach involving our in-house software PyRod was employed to systematically analyze the binding sites and develop molecular dynamics-based 3D pharmacophores for virtual screening. The identified compounds were biochemically characterized revealing low micromolar affinity for both ZIKV and WNV proteases. Their lead-like properties together with rationalized binding modes represent valuable starting points for future lead optimization. Since the NS2B-NS3 protease is highly conserved among flaviviruses, these compounds may also drive the development of pan-flaviviral antiviral drugs. We previously disclosed GS-9973 (entospletinib) as a selective SYK inhibitor that is under clinical evaluation in hematological malignancies. However, a BID dosing regimen and drug interaction with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) prevented development of entospletinib in inflammatory diseases. Herein, we report the discovery of a second-generation SYK inhibitor, GS-9876 (lanraplenib), which has human pharmacokinetic properties suitable for once-daily administration and is devoid of any interactions with PPI. We used our machine learning approach to predict novel molecules that would inhibit c-Abl while also having minimal liability against hERG. Thus, o-BZ-RvE2 was identified as a stable equivalent of RvE2, which is useful as a lead for anti-inflammatory drugs with a new mechanism of action as well as a biotool for investigating RvE2-mediated inflammation resolving pathways. Answering the call for alternative treatments, our lab has been investigating the efficacy of 600 Da branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) as a β-lactam potentiator against bacterial biofilms. Our previous study showed promise against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms. This study extends our previous findings to eradicate a more virulent pathogen MRSA biofilms. Microtiter minimum biofilm eradication concentration models, crystal violet assays, and electron microscopy images show synergistic effects between BPEI and ampicillin as a two-step mechanism step one is the removal of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to expose individual bacteria targets, and step two involves electrostatic interaction of BPEI with anionic teichoic acid in the cell wall to potentiate the antibiotic.
