Autoimmune DM has been reported as an ICI-associated irAE. However, patients with immunocompromising conditions such as HIV are usually excluded from ICI trials. Therefore, little is known about such irAEs in this population. In this case, risk of ICI-DM as an irAE was likely increased by several factors including family history, a high-risk genetic profile, islet-related immunologic abnormalities, active lymphoma, and HIV infection with a possible immune reconstitution event. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for development of irAEs associated with ICI, particularly as use of these therapies broadens. Thorough investigation for presence of higher-risk features should be conducted and may warrant inclusion of pre-therapy genetic and/or autoantibody screening.Language is a remarkably efficient tool for transmitting information. Yet human speakers make statements that are inefficient, imprecise, or even contrary to their own beliefs, all in the service of being polite. What rational machinery underlies polite language use? Here, we show that polite speech emerges from the competition of three communicative goals to convey information, to be kind, and to present oneself in a good light. We formalize this goal tradeoff using a probabilistic model of utterance production, which predicts human utterance choices in socially sensitive situations with high quantitative accuracy, and we show that our full model is superior to its variants with subsets of the three goals. This utility-theoretic approach to speech acts takes a step toward explaining the richness and subtlety of social language use.According to the influential "Two Visual Pathways" hypothesis, the cortical visual system is segregated into two pathways, with the ventral, occipitotemporal pathway subserving object perception, and the dorsal, occipitoparietal pathway subserving the visuomotor control of action. However, growing evidence suggests that the dorsal pathway also plays a functional role in object perception. As such, we consider whether naturalistic stimuli, such as real-world solid objects, might engage dorsal cortex more so than simplified or artificial stimuli such as images that do not afford action, and how the use of suboptimal stimuli might limit our understanding of the functional contribution of dorsal cortex to visual perception.Aomori hiba (Thujopsis dolobrata) has been used as a building material for centuries because of the wood's resistance against fungi and termites. In addition, the essential oil of hiba wood has a relaxing woody fragrance and antifungal properties and is composed mainly of (-)-thujopsene, cedrol, and hinokitiol. Steam distillation is the main industrial method for obtaining the oil but requires large amounts of water and heating energy. The present study describes the use of a cellulose-dissolving [C2mim][(MeO)(H)PO2] ionic liquid (IL) for efficient extraction of hiba oil. As a control method, organic solvent extraction using either hexane, Et2O, or EtOAc was conducted at 80 °C for 1 h. The method developed in this study using an IL was conducted at the same temperature and time as the control method and relied on partial dissolution of the wood using the IL before partitioning the hiba oil into the organic solvent for analysis. Quantitative analysis was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in selected ion-monitoring mode. The results showed that extraction using the [C2mim][(MeO)(H)PO2] IL/hexane biphasic system improved the yields of (-)-thujopsene, cedrol 1.2- and 2.3-fold, when compared with the control method. Furthermore, extraction at a lower temperature (30 °C) did not significantly change the yield. The IL could be recovered with high purity, while the cellulose-rich material and lignin were regenerated. This study demonstrates the ability to effectively extract wood essential oil more quickly and under milder conditions than the conventional method, with subsequent separation and regeneration of wood biopolymers using an IL.Conventional acid diversion agents cannot tolerate the high temperature and salinity of acidizing water-producing oil wells that contain bottom water and heterogeneous layers. Therefore, a water/oil (w/o) emulsion was proposed as an acid diversion agent to promote acidification. The selected emulsifier, oleic acid imidazoline, is a switchable emulsifier. Because this emulsifier reacts with acids to transform amines into ammonium, the emulsion rapidly demulsifies, and the emulsion acid diversion agent can use the spent acid flowback to remove plugging. Evaluation of the emulsion properties indicated that a 10 wt % emulsifier generated a stable emulsion at oil/water ratios from 19 to 46 at 90 °C. Viscosity was higher at lower oil/water ratios, and the emulsion with an oil/water ratio of 46, which had a low viscosity, was injected into the formation. During injection, the emulsion continued to emulsify in high-permeability channels, which increased the viscosity until the water layer was blocked. During experiments, single-tube and dual-tube models were designed to evaluate the injectivity and plugging selectivity of this emulsion. The results showed that the resistance factors exceeded 14 in the high-permeability cores when the emulsion was injected. The higher permeability ratio in parallel cores allowed a larger emulsion volume to enter the high-permeability cores. In experiments using parallel cores, the block rate of the high-permeability cores exceeded 92%, and that of the low-permeability cores was less than 12%. Finally, this emulsion was injected into two groups of parallel carbonate cores for acidification diversion tests. The results indicated that the permeability of the acidified low-permeability core was basically the same as that of the high-permeability core plugged by the emulsion. The findings of this study improve the understanding of the feasibility and advantages of using emulsions as acid diversion agents for high-temperature and high-salinity oil wells containing bottom water.
