Heart rhythm complexity, a measure of heart rate dynamics and a risk predictor in various clinical diseases, has not been systematically studied in patients with end-stage renal disease. To assess heart rhythm complexity and conventional heart rate variability measures, 4-h continuous electrocardiography for a retrospective cohort of 202 ostensibly healthy control subjects and 51 hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease were analyzed. Heart rhythm complexity was quantified by the complexity index from the measurement of the multiscale entropy profile.
During a follow-up of 13 months, 8 people died in the patient group. Values of either traditional heart rate variability measurements or complexity indices were found significantly lower in patients than those in healthy controls. In addition, the complexity indices (Area 1-5, Area 6-15 and Area 6-20) in the mortality group were significantly lower than those in the survival group, while there were no significant differences in traditional heart rate variability parameters between the two groups. In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, Area 6-20 (AUC = 0.895, p < 0.001) showed the strongest predictive power between mortality and survival groups.
The results suggest that heart rhythm complexity is impaired for patients with end-stage renal disease. Furthermore, the complexity index of heart rate variability quantified by multiscale entropy may be a powerful independent predictor of mortality in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Thus, it would be useful to investigate how physical functional performance in functional tests could determine the prognosis in patients with HF, because HF is the leading cause of hospital admissions for people older than 65 years old. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarise and synthesise the evidence published about the relationship between physical functional performance and prognosis in patients with HF, as well as assess the risk of bias of included studies and the level of evidence per outcome.
Major electronic databases, such as PubMed, AMED, CINAHL, EMBASE, PEDro, Web of Science, were searched from inception to March 2020 for observational longitudinal cohort studies (prospective or retrospective) examining the relationship between physical functerate level of evidence per outcome.

The prevalence of visual impairment increases very significantly with age. The most common visual pathologies with aging are Age-related Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy. Given their consequences on autonomy and quality of life, it is important to have regular ophthalmological monitoring, to identify and at best prevent these pathologies which can be disabling.Normal aging can be defined as the result of the effects of genetic and environmental factors to which subjects are exposed throughout their lives. This process is slow and progressive and must be distinguished from disease. All organs are subject to aging in a physiological way.Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease as a leading cause of global blindness. Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptosis and optic nerve damage are the main pathological changes. Patients have elevated intraocular pressure and progressive visual field loss. Unfortunately, current treatments for glaucoma merely stay at delaying the disease progression. As a promising treatment, stem cell-based neuronal regeneration therapy holds potential for glaucoma, thereby great efforts have been paid on it. RGC regeneration and transplantation are key approaches for the future treatment of glaucoma. A line of studies have shown that a variety of cells can be used to regenerate RGCs, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (****), and retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). In this review, we overview the current progress on the regeneration of pluripotent stem cell-derived RGCs and outlook the perspective and challenges in this field.

An update is given regarding recent findings in glaucoma, but also on the improvements needed to bring vascular assessments closer to everyday clinical practice.Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells with associated structural and functional changes of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer. However, recent studies employing advanced neuroimaging techniques confirmed that glaucomatous damage is not limited to the eye but extends to the brain, affecting it also beyond the central visual pathways and disrupting brain network organization. We therefore posit that, while visual field changes play an important role in glaucoma-induced disability, central nervous pathways and mechanisms may play an important role in sustaining functional and daily living disability caused by the disease. An early do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is classified as such when it occurs within 24 hours of admission. Early DNR has been previously associated with in-hospital mortality among acute heart failure (AHF) patients and one-year mortality among patients discharged from ICU. Here, we investigate whether early DNR is associated with long-term mortality in AHF Japanese patients, by performing a retrospective cohort study.
We retrospectively investigated all patients with AHF, admitted to our hospital between April 2013 and March 2015, and survived to discharge. We obtained data on demographics, comorbidities, laboratory and echocardiography results, social background, DNR status, and outcomes (one-year death). The association of early DNR with one-year death was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Among 370 survive to discharge patients, 48 (12%) were lost to follow up. We analyzed 322 patients. The median age was 74 years, and 80 (25%) had an early DNR order. Patients with a DNR order were older and displayed more activities of daily living (ADL)-dependence. Early DNR was associated with higher one-year mortality.

Despite the long-term combined treatments, he suffered from chronic urticaria, low-grade fever and bone pain. He was found to have high inflammatory markers, hypogammaglobulinemia, monoclonal IgM - kappa light chain in serum and increased radiotracer uptake in the whole bone scintigraphy. No pathological variants for monogenic autoinflammatory diseases were present in the genome exome sequencing. These investigations confirmed the diagnosis of Schnitzler syndrome, which is an exception before the age of 35. Switching from tocilizumab to interleukin 1 receptor inhibitor, anakinra led to a full clinical response and normalisation of inflammatory markers. Patients with a history of fever and chronic urticaria are routinely tested for monoclonal gammopathy in the context of malignancy, but it should also be considered as a sign of the autoinflammatory syndrome. The Schnitzler syndrome and the adult-onset Still's disease share common features, so the diagnosis requires a thorough investigation to establish an optimal treatment. A total of 89 patients were treated with ceftriaxone and clindamycin, while 124 received piperacillin/be treated empirically with broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Lenvatinib, a novel multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has been approved for treating differentiated thyroid cancer. Herein, we describe a rare case of acute pancreatitis that developed during lenvatinib treatment in a 65-year-old man with recurrent thyroid cancer.
The patient was admitted to our department following a complaint of acute-onset epigastric pain and indigestion. He had been receiving lenvatinib since 34 days. Although his serum amylase and lipase levels were normal, he had acute-onset persistent epigastric pain and typical computed tomography findings, which were consistent with those of acute pancreatitis. As other common etiologies were excluded, it was concluded that the patient had lenvatinib-induced acute pancreatitis. On admission day 14, he could consume food orally, after conservative care, including drug cessation, intravenous hydration, and pain control.
Physicians should consider acute pancreatitis as a differential diagnosis for patients complaining of abdominal pain while on lenvatinib, regardless of hyperamylasemia or hyperlipasemia. An early do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is classified as such when it occurs within 24 hours of admission. Early DNR has been previously associated with in-hospital mortality among acute heart failure (AHF) patients and one-year mortality among patients discharged from ICU. Here, we investigate whether early DNR is associated with long-term mortality in AHF Japanese patients, by performing a retrospective cohort study. We retrospectively investigated all patients with AHF, admitted to our hospital between April 2013 and March 2015, and survived to discharge. We obtained data on demographics, comorbidities, laboratory and echocardiography results, social background, DNR status, and outcomes (one-year death). The association of early DNR with one-year death was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Among 370 survive to discharge patients, 48 (12%) were lost to follow up. We analyzed 322 patients. The median age was 74 years, and 80 (25%) had an early DNR order. Patients with a DNR order were older and displayed more activities of daily living (ADL)-dependence. Early DNR was associated with higher one-year mortality. Early DNR was associated with one-year mortality among AHF patients. Further studies are necessary to investigate unmeasured factors associated with a worse prognosis related to early DNR among AHF patients. The model shows that the population compliance of the GIM was gradual between 30% to 75%, contributing to a significant reduction on the infection peak and mortality. Our purpose was to provide a comprehensive review of the literature exploring the relationship between CR dimensions, selected according to the Stern model, and frailty status. A review of the literature on the association between potential CR dimensions and frailty was carried out through PubMed, Web of Knowledge and Scopus. CR expressed in terms of education, occupation, premorbid intelligence quotient and leisure time activities was associated with frailty in both cross-sectional and longitudinal observations. The majority of reviewed evidence suggests a potential protective role of CR factors against the onset and the worsening of frailty among older adults. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive overview regarding the association between CR dimensions and frailty. Education, occupation, premorbid intelligence quotient and leisure time activities are able to interact with the general concept of frailty, rather than simply affecting the cognitive trajectory towards dementia. The lack of a unique and operationalized approach to the assessment of CR, as well as the wide heterogeneity of frailty evaluation tools and criteria, denote some methodological critical issues that need to be overcome. Studies regarding the impact of adult children's migration on older parents left-behind have focused on physical and mental health. This study assessed the relationship between migration of adult children and quality of life (QOL) of older parents left-behind in Nepal.
A cross-sectional community-based survey was carried out (May-July 2019) among 791 randomly selected older adults aged ≥60 years. QOL was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-abbreviated scale, and migration status was assessed into three categories no migration, internal migration only and any international migration. A range of sociodemographic characteristics were measured for adjustment. Associations between migration of children and each domain of the QOL were examined by multilevel mixed regression.
Scores for QOL were; 58.8 ± 19.8 for physical, 63.7 ± 18.0 for psychological, 60.7 ± 16.2 for social, and 61.8 ± 15.0 for environmental domains. This study identified positive and null associations between the migration of children and QOL for parents, with higher scores for physical (b = 5.16, P = 0.017) and environmental (b = 3.19, P = 0.046) domains among left-behind parents whose children migrated internally compared with parents whose children did not migrate.
The findings differ from previous research showing poorer QOL among left-behind older parents. Liver biopsy demonstrated diffuse centrilobular canalicular cholestasis, prominent ductular reaction, and mild lobular inflammation with rare non-necrotizing epithelioid granuloma suggestive of drug-induced liver injury. Liver enzymes returned to normal levels approximately 3 months after the patient stopped both supplements. We present the mechanism of drug-induced liver injury associated with 2 selective androgen receptor modulators, including RAD-140 and LGD 4033.Recurrent angiomyolipomas are rare, particularly in the pancreas of patients with tuberous sclerosis (TSC). We report a 59-year-old woman with TSC who underwent bilateral nephrectomy for malignant, hemorrhagic angiomyolipomas with subsequent renal transplant. Almost 10 years after initial discovery of renal angiomyolipoma, the patient was found to have a pancreatic tail angiomyolipoma on endoscopic ultrasound performed for the evaluation of abnormal liver enzymes. The mass was not visualized on previous imaging. Labs were significant for elevated transaminases, positive smooth muscle antibody, and increased immunoglobulins. Biopsy indicated drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis. We report a case of AEN in a 71-year-old patient with clinical signs of gastric outlet obstruction along with anemia and sepsis in the setting of a recent kidney transplant. After failing standard supportive measures, tacrolimus was switched to cyclosporin with overall rapid improvement of AEN and concomitant duodenal ulcerations. Many studies have associated possible genetic factors with susceptibility to DILI, but there is currently no literature with evidence of instances of DILI within the same family. Two sisters presented with similar symptoms and signs of liver injury including jaundice, scleral icterus, abdominal pain, and anorexia with transaminitis and abnormal coagulation studies. Both sisters were started on amoxicillin approximately 2-3 weeks before presentation. They both had progression of the liver injury, and on biopsies, they had similar findings indicative of DILI as well.Acute lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is self-limiting and managed conservatively. Ongoing bleeding from a lower GI source and hemodynamic instability can create difficult diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. The severity of bleeding can necessitate emergent diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Diverticulosis and angiodysplasias are the most common causes of massive lower GI hemorrhage. Other etiologies that can lead to life-threatening hemorrhage are important to recognize. We present a rare case of massive lower GI hemorrhage attributable to a superior rectal artery pseudoaneurysm. The absence of a preceding traumatic or iatrogenic cause distinguishes this case from other reports in the literature.

In this paper, a wideband InP-based hybrid plasmonic nano-antenna (HPNA) operating at telecommunication wavelengths has been proposed. Monolithically integrating InP-based lasers with hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) as a feed line of the proposed HPNA on the same InGaAsP/InP wafer can increase the antenna efficiency. A new vertical director has been employed to have a highly directive horizontal radiation pattern. This enhancement is attributed to the efficient coupling between the radiation patterns of arm elements as well as reduced side lobes and ****-lobes levels due to the achieved impedance matching. As a result, the directivity has been increased considerably, 3.6 dBi at 193.5 THz (1550 nm) and 1.1 dBi at 229 THz (1310 nm). The HPNA shows the high directivity, total efficiency and quality factor of 11.8, 97.49% and 94.57, respectively. Further, to verify the validity of confining the fundamental TM mode to a thin layer with the lower refractive index, both theoretical and numerical methods have been employed. Therefore, we have derived an analytical formula to investigate the HPW dispersion relation based on the transfer matrix theory and genetic algorithm. Moreover, due to the HPNA ability to receive an optical signal from free space and transmit it to the waveguide based on the reciprocity theorem, the HPNA performance as an optical wireless on-chip nano-link has been investigated analytically and numerically. Additionally, to obtain a high optical power signal and steering the beam angle, the antenna gain and directivity have been calculated with two different types of array structure by controlling the relative phase shift between the array elements and elements number. To validate the array design performance, a three dimensional full-wave numerical simulation and array factor theory have been exploited. Based on the SC imaging technology, the effects of various factors such as flow ratio of gas to liquid (GLR), total flow and nozzle size on the spray were studied.Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy has been widely employed for gas sensing, where the gas concentration is often obtained from the absorption signal with a known or a fixed absorption path length. The phase angle of the first harmonic signal (1f phase angle) in the WMS technique is utilized for retrieving the absorption path length as well as the gas absorption signal. This approach has been experimentally validated by measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in open path environment. The CO2 concentration is evaluated by measuring the reflectance signal from a distant object with hundreds of meters away from the system. The measurement accuracy of the absorption path length, evaluated from a 7-day continuous measurement, can reach up to 1%. The promising result has shown a great potential of utilizing the 1f phase angle for gas concentration measurements, e.g., open path remote sensing applications.We present and characterize a narrow-linewidth external-cavity diode laser at 2 μm, and show that it represents a low-cost, high-performance alternative to fiber lasers for research into 2 μm photonic technologies for next-generation gravitational-wave detectors. A linewidth of 20 kHz for a 10 ms integration time was measured without any active stabilization, with frequency noise of ∼ 15 Hz/Hz between 3 kHz and 100 kHz. This performance is suitable for the generation of quantum squeezed light, and we measure intensity noise comparable to that of master oscillators used in current gravitational wave interferometers. The laser wavelength is tunable over a 120 nm range, and both the frequency and intensity can be modulated at up to 10 MHz by modulating the diode current. These features also make it suitable for other emerging applications in the 2 μm wavelength region including gas sensing, optical communications and LIDAR.An optical phased array (OPA) in silicon nitride (SiN) is conspicuously highlighted as a vital alternative to its counterpart in silicon. Nowadays, little is known on the selective signaling pathways activated when CXCR4 is triggered by the CXCL12/HMGB1 heterocomplex. In the present work, we demonstrate that this heterocomplex acts as a CXCR4 balanced agonist, activating both G protein and β-arrestins-mediated signaling pathways to sustain chemotaxis. We generated β-arrestins knock out HeLa cells by CRISPR/Cas9 technology and show that the CXCL12/HMGB1 heterocomplex-mediated actin polymerization is primarily β-arrestin1 dependent, while chemotaxis requires both β-arrestin1 and β-arrestin2. Triggering of CXCR4 with the CXCL12/HMGB1 heterocomplex leads to an unexpected receptor retention on the cell surface, which depends on β-arrestin2. In conclusion, the CXCL12/HMGB1 heterocomplex engages the β-arrestin proteins differently from CXCL12, promoting a prompt availability of CXCR4 on the cell surface, and enhancing directional cell migration. In contrast, there are no medicines to control NSAID-induced small intestinal ulcers, which are accompanied by a mucosal invasion of bacteria and subsequent activation of immune cells. Galectin-3 (Gal3), an endogenous lectin, has anti-microbial and pro-inflammatory functions. In the small intestine, since Gal3 is highly expressed in epithelial cells constitutively and macrophages inducibly, the Gal3 level can affect microbiota composition and macrophage activation. We hypothesized that the modulation of Gal3 expression could be beneficial in NSAID-induced intestinal ulcers. Using Gal3 knockout (Gal3KO) ****, we determined whether Gal3 could be a therapeutic target in NSAID-induced intestinal ulcers. Following the administration of indomethacin, an NSAID, we found that small intestinal ulcers were less severe in Gal3KO **** than in wild-type (WT) ****. We also found that the composition of intestinal microbiota was different between WT and Gal3KO **** and that bactericidal antibiotic polymyxin B treatment significantly suppressed NSAID-induced ulcers. Furthermore, clodronate, a macrophage modulator, attenuated NSAID-induced ulcers. Therefore, Gal3 could be an exacerbating factor in NSAID-induced intestinal ulcers by affecting the intestinal microbiota population and macrophage activity. Inhibition of Gal3 may be a therapeutic strategy in NSAID-induced intestinal ulcers.

Among the recent disease-modifying treatments available, Natalizumab, a monoclonal antibody directed against the alpha chain of the VLA-4 integrin (CD49d), is a potent inhibitor of cell migration toward the tissues including CNS. It potently reduces relapses and active brain lesions in the relapsing remitting form of the disease. However, it has also been associated with a severe infectious complication, the progressive multifocal leukoencephalitis (PML). Using the standard protocol with an injection every 4 weeks it has been shown by a close monitoring of the drug that trough levels soon reach a plateau with an almost saturation of the target cell receptor as well as a down modulation of this receptor. The current work assessed the link between environmental sustainability commitment and financial performance of firms listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The study was quantitative in nature with a case study research design. The longitudinal design was adopted where the researcher collected panel data from 2011-2018. The population of the study included all firms listed on the JSE Responsible Investment Index in South Africa. The sample constituted of 32 firms listed on the Financial Times Stock Exchange FTSE/JSE Responsible Investment Index in South Africa. The researchers employed the panel regression analysis model to analyze the data. Specifically, the Feasible Generalized Least Squares regression model was used in this study. Financial performance was treated as the dependent variable as measured by earnings per share and share price. The independent variables of the study included components of environmental sustainability such as carbon emission reduction and environmental compliance. Control variables such as firm size and liquidity were used in the study. The findings indicated that carbon emission reduction was positively and significantly related to earnings per share and share price. The findings further exhibited that environmental compliance was positively related to earnings per share and share price. It was concluded that firms can enhance their financial performance from environmental investment as all the hypotheses were supported. This study contributes practically towards shaping environmental policies and it also serves as motivation to listed companies that they can enhance both their profitability and market value from environmental investments.The purpose of this study was to determine social determinants of cigarette smoking and ever using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among young adults aged 18 to 25 years in the United States between 2010 and 2018. Using secondary data from National Health Interview Surveys (NHIS) across the 2010, 2014, and 2018 survey years, this study analyzed the prevalence rates of cigarette smoking and ever using e-cigarettes between 2010 and 2018, demographic and socioeconomic disparities in smoking, and the relationship between previous e-cigarette use and current smoking. First, the past decade witnessed a notable decline in conventional cigarette smoking and a sharp increase in e-cigarette use among youth. These trends were consistent regardless of socioeconomic status. Second, demographic and socioeconomic disparities persisted in cigarette smoking. Non-Hispanic white male youth were more likely to become smokers as they grew older. Young people with lower educational attainment, living below the U.S. federal poverty level, and having a poor physical health status had a higher smoking prevalence. Third, previous e-cigarette use was more likely to relate to subsequent cigarette use among young people. Laggards in terms of environmental sustainability commitment are likely to face fines and penalties as talks to tighten environmental legislation are now at an advanced stage globally. The current work assessed the link between environmental sustainability commitment and financial performance of firms listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The study was quantitative in nature with a case study research design. The longitudinal design was adopted where the researcher collected panel data from 2011-2018. The population of the study included all firms listed on the JSE Responsible Investment Index in South Africa. The sample constituted of 32 firms listed on the Financial Times Stock Exchange FTSE/JSE Responsible Investment Index in South Africa. The researchers employed the panel regression analysis model to analyze the data. Specifically, the Feasible Generalized Least Squares regression model was used in this study. Financial performance was treated as the dependent variable as measured by earnings per share and share price. The independent variables of the study included components of environmental sustainability such as carbon emission reduction and environmental compliance. Control variables such as firm size and liquidity were used in the study. The findings indicated that carbon emission reduction was positively and significantly related to earnings per share and share price. The findings further exhibited that environmental compliance was positively related to earnings per share and share price. It was concluded that firms can enhance their financial performance from environmental investment as all the hypotheses were supported. This study contributes practically towards shaping environmental policies and it also serves as motivation to listed companies that they can enhance both their profitability and market value from environmental investments.The purpose of this study was to determine social determinants of cigarette smoking and ever using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among young adults aged 18 to 25 years in the United States between 2010 and 2018. Using secondary data from National Health Interview Surveys (NHIS) across the 2010, 2014, and 2018 survey years, this study analyzed the prevalence rates of cigarette smoking and ever using e-cigarettes between 2010 and 2018, demographic and socioeconomic disparities in smoking, and the relationship between previous e-cigarette use and current smoking. First, the past decade witnessed a notable decline in conventional cigarette smoking and a sharp increase in e-cigarette use among youth. These trends were consistent regardless of socioeconomic status. Second, demographic and socioeconomic disparities persisted in cigarette smoking. Non-Hispanic white male youth were more likely to become smokers as they grew older. Young people with lower educational attainment, living below the U.S. federal poverty level, and having a poor physical health status had a higher smoking prevalence. Third, previous e-cigarette use was more likely to relate to subsequent cigarette use among young people. Here, we develop one mitochondrial and one nuclear set of target capture probes for the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) and test them on seawater samples collected in Qatar to investigate the potential of target capture for eDNA-based population studies. The mitochondrial target capture successfully retrieved ~235× (90× - 352× per base position) coverage of the whale shark mitogenome. Using a minor allele frequency of 5%, we find 29 variable sites throughout the mitogenome, indicative of at least five contributing individuals. A systematic search of PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library was performed for entries until July 2020. Eighteen studies with 22 cohorts were included, encompassing 755 patients. The pooled median overall survival (OS) and 1- and 2-year OS rates were 14.2 months, 55.6%, and 27.4%, respectively. The pooled median OS in the surgery and EBRT arms were 15.3 and 11.7 months, respectively. The pooled 1-year OS rate in the surgery arm was significantly higher than that in the EBRT arm (62.4%, 95% CI 53.8%-70.3% vs 48.8%, 95% CI 40.9-56.8, respectively; P = .023), while the 2-year OS rates were similar (27.5%, 95% CI 19.7%-37.1% vs 26.9%, 95% CI 20.7-34.2, respectively; P = .913). In the surgical arm, the perioperative mortality and grade ≥3 complication rates were 0%-7.6% and 3.9%-67%, respectively. Grade ≥3 complications and radiation-induced liver disease were rarely observed in the EBRT arm. Surgery could be an effective local modality for achieving the best survival rate, though it requires efforts to minimize morbidities and careful patient selection. EBRT, as a noninvasive modality, is a valid palliative option, especially for high-risk patients with a shorter life expectancy.

A volume challenge can unmask pulmonary hypertension (PH) and its mechanism. We evaluated the impact of a volume challenge on mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) and mean pulmonary artery wedge pressure (mPAWP) and its prognostic implications in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) undergoing aortic valve replacement (AVR).
In 285 patients with severe AS (indexed aortic valve area 0.41±0.13cm
/m
), mPAP and mPAWP were measured before and after administration of 150±58mL of low-osmolal or iso-osmolal contrast. Following contrast, mPAP and mPAWP rose from 25±10 and 16±8mmHg by 5±4 and 4±4mmHg to 30±11 and 20±8mmHg. There were 112 (39%) patients with pre-contrast PH and 70 (40% of those without pre-contrast PH) patients with post-contrast PH only. Post-contrast PH patients were intermediate between pre-contrast PH and no PH in terms of AS severity, cardiac dysfunction, and haemodynamics. After a median follow-up of 43months post-AVR, pre-contrast PH patients had numerically the highest mortality driven by those with pre-contrast combined pre-capillary and post-capillary PH (n=35), while post-contrast changes in mPAP and mPAWP were not related to mortality.

Cenchrus ciliaris L. is a widely used species for cattle feed in arid and semi-arid regions due to good forage value and known tolerance to drought conditions. Here, we provide insights to adaptive responses of two contrasting genotypes of C. ciliaris (drought-tolerant "RN51" and drought-sensitive "RN1") to face drought stress and recovery conditions and the implications for tissue lignification. Drought stress caused a reversible decrease in the leaf water relationship and damage to photosystem II, leading to an increased generation of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation. Plants of RN51 exhibited a pronounced increase of antioxidant enzymatic activities. Unlike the drought-sensitive genotype, RN51 exhibited further development of lignified tissues and bulliform cells and had the greatest thickness of the adaxial epidermis. Drought stress led to the rapid activation of the expression of lignin biosynthesis pathway-related enzymes. The transcript level of the caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase gene decreased in RN1, whereas cinnamoyl-CoA reductase transcripts were increased in RN51. After rewatering, the tolerant genotype recovered more rapidly than RN1. Even though the two genotypes survived when they were exposed to drought stress, RN1 showed the highest reduction in growth parameters, and this reduction was sustained during rewatering. The results indicated that the capacity to regulate lipid peroxidation and mitigate oxidative damage could be one of the mechanisms included in tolerance to drought stress. Although a positive relationship between copper and chronic pulmonary diseases has been reported, the underlying reasons are still not clear. The copper level in the sputum of patients with various pulmonary diseases was measured. An inflammatory model was established to evaluate the impact of inflammation on copper uptake in the lung. We found that the level of sputum copper was increased in patients with various pulmonary diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Then, we confirmed that **** with pulmonary inflammation were susceptible to copper-mediated oxidative damage because of copper overload in lung tissue. Further investigation demonstrated that interleukin (IL)-17 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α exerted synergistic effects in airway epithelial cells by upregulating the expression of six-transmembrane epithelial antigens of prostate 4 (STEAP4), a metalloreductase that reduces extracellular copper ions from the cupric state to the cuprous state and facilitates copper uptake. Inhibition of STEAP4 decreased the copper uptake of cells and inhibited copper-mediated oxidative damage. Moreover, we demonstrated that the upregulation of STEAP4 by IL-17 and TNF-α was largely dependent on TNF receptor-associated factor 4 (TRAF4). Traf4-/- **** were resistant to copper-mediated oxidative damage. We conducted a pot experiment to influence the negative impact of different levels of salinity (0, 10, and 20 dSm-1 ) and drought stress (100, 80, 60, and 40% water field capacity), to study different growth-related parameters, physiological alterations and ion uptake by T. mandavillei. Both salinity and drought stress caused a negative impact by affecting several attributes of T. mandavillei, but the plants showed some resistance against drought stress conditions in terms of growth and biomass. Further investigation demonstrated that interleukin (IL)-17 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α exerted synergistic effects in airway epithelial cells by upregulating the expression of six-transmembrane epithelial antigens of prostate 4 (STEAP4), a metalloreductase that reduces extracellular copper ions from the cupric state to the cuprous state and facilitates copper uptake. Inhibition of STEAP4 decreased the copper uptake of cells and inhibited copper-mediated oxidative damage. Moreover, we demonstrated that the upregulation of STEAP4 by IL-17 and TNF-α was largely dependent on TNF receptor-associated factor 4 (TRAF4). Traf4-/- mice were resistant to copper-mediated oxidative damage. Our data suggest a novel IL-17/TNF-α-TRAF4-STEAP4 axis that regulates copper homeostasis.Tetraena mandavillei L. is a perennial shrub native to the Middle Eastern countries of Asia, which is extensively regarded as a drought-tolerant plant. However, the plant reduces growth and biomass when grown in high concentrations of sodium chloride in the soil. We conducted a pot experiment to influence the negative impact of different levels of salinity (0, 10, and 20 dSm-1 ) and drought stress (100, 80, 60, and 40% water field capacity), to study different growth-related parameters, physiological alterations and ion uptake by T. mandavillei. Both salinity and drought stress caused a negative impact by affecting several attributes of T. mandavillei, but the plants showed some resistance against drought stress conditions in terms of growth and biomass. In addition to that, we noticed that a combinatorial and individual impact of drought and salinity stress decreased photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange parameters in T. mandavillei. For the DHEAS quantification, LC/ESI-MS/MS has the advantage of a high specificity compared with immunoassay, whereas LC/ESI-MS/MS has room to improve the analysis throughput. One of the promising solutions to enhance the analysis throughput is sample-multiplexing in the same injection, which can reduce the total LC/ESI-MS/MS run time. In this study, a quadruplex LC/ESI-MS/MS method was developed to quantify DHEAS in four different serum samples in a single run. After the four samples were separately deproteinized and derivatized with one of four Girard reagents (Girard reagent T, P and their isotopologs), the resulting samples were mixed, then injected into the LC/ESI-MS/MS. The applicability and advantage of the developed method were evaluated based on the analysis of nine batches of serum samples from healthy subjects (total 36 samples). The limit of quantitation was 0.050 μg/ml, which was sensitive enough for clinical laboratory use. The calibration curve was found to be linear within a plasma concentration range of 25-2500 ng/mL, with the coefficient of determination (r2 ) being 0.9997.
