Here, we present a scientific solution by introducing high rotational symmetrical coherent acoustic waves, in order to enable the shape and arrangement of the acoustic potential wells to be flexibly modulated, and therefore to assemble on a large area diverse biomimetic arrays on a microfluidic platform. Ring arrays, honeycomb, and many other biomimetic arrays are achieved by real-time modulation of the wave vectors and phase relation of acoustic beams from six directions. In the experiments, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), arranged in ring structures, tend to connect with the adjacent cells and reach confluency, thus directing the in vitro two-dimensional vascular network formation. Higher rotational symmetry of the six coherent acoustic waves provides **** more flexibility and diversity for acoustic cell assembly. Sufficiently large applied stresses drive the formation of +1 charge topological vortices through the merger of two +1/2 defects. The directed motion of the defects is accompanied by ordering of the vorticity and velocity of the active flows within the film that is qualitatively unlike the response of passive viscous films. Many features of the film's response to the stress are captured by lattice Boltzmann simulations, providing insight into the anomalous viscoelastic nature of the active nematic. The topological vortex formation is accompanied by a rheological instability in the film that leads to significant increase in the flow velocities. Comparison of the velocity profile in vicinity of the vortex with fluid-dynamics calculations provides an estimate of the film viscosity.Suspensions of iodinated polymer nanoparticles are evaluated as contrast agent for Computed Tomography (CT) and Spectral Photon Counting Computed Tomography (SPCCT). Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) is the phenomenon of lowered blood pressure after a single bout of exercise. Only a fraction of people develops PEH but its occurrence correlates well with long-term effects of sports on blood pressure. Therefore, PEH has been suggested as a suitable predictor for the effectivity of exercise as therapy in hypertension. Local vascular bioactive lipids might play a potential role in this context. We performed a cross-over clinical pilot study with 18 healthy volunteers to investigate the occurrence of PEH after a single short-term endurance exercise. Furthermore, we investigated the plasma lipid profile with focus on arachidonic acid (AA)-derived metabolites as potential biomarkers of PEH. A single bout of ergometer cycling induced a significant PEH in healthy volunteers with the expected high inter-individual variability. Targeted lipid spectrum analysis revealed significant upregulation of several lipids in the direct post-exercise phase. Among these changes, only 15- hydroxyeicosatetranoic acid (HETE) correlated significantly with the extent of PEH but in an AA-independent manner, suggesting that 15-HETE might act as specific PEH-marker. Our data indicate that specific lipid modulation might facilitate the identification of patients who will benefit from exercise activity in hypertension therapy. However, larger trials including hypertonic patients are necessary to verify the clinical value of this hypothesis.Increasing artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in developing countries has raised health concerns in mining communities. A preliminary health survey was conducted in Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region, Myanmar, in February 2020 to assess the health conditions of an ASGM community. Respiratory function and other clinical assessments were evaluated in miners and non-miners, and participants' hair was analyzed for heavy metals. Respiratory function of miners was similar to that of non-miners. However, miners' respiratory function declined with longer mining activity duration. In total, 3 out of 18 miners showed neurological signs and symptoms of chronic mercury intoxication. The median concentration of the hair mercury was significantly higher in miners than non-miners (P = 0.01), and 9 out of 18 miners and 2 out of 11 non-miners showed the warning level of mercury. We found that, despite an association between declining respiratory function and length of time mining, only a minority of miners showed clinical features of chronic mercury intoxication. Further clinical surveys with a larger sample size are necessary to determine the broader health status of this community. In addition, clinical indicators such as pulmonary function tests are recommended as additional criteria for the diagnosis of mercury intoxication.Analogue-to-digital converters (ADC) using oversampling technology and the Σ-∆ modulation mechanism are widely applied in digital audio systems. A 5-bit successive approximation register (SAR) quantizer is integrated into the chip, which reduces the number of comparators and the power consumption of the quantizer compared with flash ADC-type quantizers. An analogue passive adder is used to sum the input signals and it is embedded in a SAR ADC composed of a capacitor array and a dynamic comparator which has no static power consumption. We aimed to derive the main contents, methods, and outcomes of education using consumer involvement for mental health nursing students. We searched six electronic databases using English and Korean search terms; two authors independently reviewed the 14 studies that met the selection criteria. Studies on the topic were concentrated in Australia and some European countries; most of them used a qualitative design. The main education subject was recovery, and consumers tended to actively participate in education planning. Moreover, students' perceptions about education using consumer involvement and people with mental health problems changed positively, as well as their experiences of participating in mental health nursing education. There is a lack of interest in the topic in Asian countries, including Korea. Thus, future studies in Asian countries are needed to conduct qualitative and in-depth explorations of students' experiences regarding an educational intervention that uses consumer involvement as a tool rigorously designed for mental health nursing education. Consumer involvement can be an innovative strategy to produce high-quality mental health nurses by minimizing the gap between theory and practice in the undergraduate program.The aim of this experiment was to study the effects of a 40% inclusion of broccoli by-product (BB) and artichoke plant (AP) silages in dairy goat diets on the milk yield, composition and animal health status during a full lactation. Feed consumption was lower in AP and BB animals due to their composition and higher moisture content, and BB animals showed a significant reduction in body weight. Milk from the BB treatment had the highest fat content, total solids and useful dry matter content (5.02, 13.9 and 8.39%, respectively). The Se level was slightly lower in AP and BB animals; however, the milk of these treatments was the lowest in Na and, in the case of BB animals, the richest in Ca (1267 mg/kg). Control and AP milk showed a similar fatty acid profile, although AP had a more beneficial aptitude for human health (lower ratio of n6/n3, 12.5). Plasma components, as metabolic parameters, were adequate for goats. It was concluded that a 40% inclusion of AP is an adequate solution to reduce the cost of feeding without harming the animals' health or performance and to improve the nutritional milk quality.

Primary thyroid lymphomas are rare. They constitute only 2% of all thyroid malignancies. It is important to distinguish it from other tumors of the thyroid due to the marked difference in approach to management. Preoperative diagnostic confirmation is ideal to allow for appropriate therapeutic management, which consists of chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy and to avoid unnecessary surgery. In a select group of patients, surgery may be of benefit to relieve obstructive symptoms and establish diagnosis.
Presented herein is a 48 year old female with a progressively enlarging neck mass previously being treated for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Obstructive symptoms and a preoperative diagnosis of anaplastic carcinoma prompted surgical intervention. The patient underwent resection of the tumor with a total thyroidectomy and bilateral neck dissection. Post -operative diagnosis of non Hodgkins diffuse large B cell type of lymphoma was made.
Primary thyroid lymphomas are rare tumors that may present similarly with some types of thyroid malignancies. An accurate diagnosis is important because non-surgical treatment options like combination chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be effective while sparing the patient from unnecessary radical surgery.

Colonic volvulus is defined as a torsion of a part of the colon causing large bowel obstruction by strangulation which may lead to ischemia and then necrosis. The synchronous occurrence of a sigmoid colon and transverse colon volvulus is exceptional. We describe a case of synchronous sigmoid and transverse volvulus in a patient with a qualitative systematic review of this condition.
This is a 74-year-old patient with a history of chronic constipation, who consulted for bowel obstruction. Plain abdominal radiography showed diffuse gas distension of the colon with the absence of rectal gas. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and showed sigmoid colon volvulus associated with synchronous transverse colon volvulus without bowel necrosis. A left hemicolectomy with loop colostomy was performed. The restoration of bowel continuity was done 3 weeks. The post-operative course was uneventful.
The occurrence of a simultaneous sigmoid and transverse colonic volvulus is an exceptional situation. Enteroatmospheric fistula (EAF) is one of the most challenging postoperative complications following gastrointestinal surgery. Different techniques have been reported for managing the open abdomen and controlling the effluent released from an EAF.
We herein report the case of a patient who underwent bowel resection, complicated by the failure of the staple line, in the setting of an open abdomen. A male external catheter was anastomosed to the EAF opening to control the effluent and divert it away from the wound. In addition, Teflon pledgets were used to successfully patch a second, small EAF opening.

Different innovative techniques have been described to manage an EAF in the setting of an open abdomen. Langerhans` Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease involving proliferation of Langerhans-type cells, which shares immunophenotypic and ultrastructural similarities. In this article, we report a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis in solitary involvement of clavicle of adult male.
A 21-year-old male visited outpatient department on account of solitary palpable tumorous lesion in right clavicle. The lesion was found 2 weeks before the visit, and it triggered pain but no tenderness. Findings on X-ray, and CT were suggestive of homogeneous osteolytic lesion of the clavicle, and hot uptake was found in right clavicle on bone scan which is commensurate with site of the lesion. Based on findings on MRI, Ewing's sarcoma, osteomyelitis and malignant hematologic malignancies were initially suspected for differential diagnosis. For the purpose of excision and histologic analysis, excisional biopsy was performed. Biopsy concluded with diagnosis of LCH.

We describe a case of synchronous sigmoid and transverse volvulus in a patient with a qualitative systematic review of this condition. This is a 74-year-old patient with a history of chronic constipation, who consulted for bowel obstruction. Plain abdominal radiography showed diffuse gas distension of the colon with the absence of rectal gas. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and showed sigmoid colon volvulus associated with synchronous transverse colon volvulus without bowel necrosis. A left hemicolectomy with loop colostomy was performed. The restoration of bowel continuity was done 3 weeks. The post-operative course was uneventful. PURPOSE To evaluate the outcomes of routine non-contact tonometry as a screening modality for glaucoma in young adults receiving an eye examination at Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry, India. METHODS Retrospective chart review of adults 18-40 years of age screened for intraocular pressure (IOP) from November 2017 to June 2018. The diagnoses were determined by a glaucoma specialist using gonioscopy, dilated fundus examination, and occasionally, Humphrey Field Analyzer, and/or optical coherence tomography (OCT). Analyses include detection of glaucoma, ocular hypertension (OHT), angle closure, and calculation of the yield of this screening paradigm. RESULTS 28,369 younger adults were screened and 296 (1.05%) were referred to the glaucoma unit, 84 for an IOP >21▒mmHg and 208 for other reasons. The hypertensive group had a mean screening IOP of 29.3±8.4▒mmHg and the following diagnoses OHT (19%), secondary raised IOP (14%), glaucoma (26%), angle closure (4%), healthy (11 %) and need for further examination (26%). 55% of those with glaucoma were previously undiagnosed. In comparison, the normotensive group had a mean IOP of 16±2.5▒mmHg and the following diagnoses OHT (1%), glaucoma (5%), occludable angles (8%), healthy (47%) and need of further examination (33%). Nearly 40% of these patients with glaucoma were previously undiagnosed. CONCLUSION One out of every 535 young adults screened had both IOP >21▒mmHg and angle closure, OHT, secondary raised IOP or glaucoma. PURPOSE To investigate changes in the calibers of the central retinal vein (CRVT) and artery (CRAT) trunk during a short-term elevation of IOP. METHODS A prospective observational study. Acute primary angle-closure suspects underwent a dark room prone provocative test (DRPPT) for two hours. Before and at the end of the test, tonometry, swept-source optical coherence tomography, and non-mydriatic fundus photography were performed. The calibers of the CRVT and CRAT were measured on the fundus photos taken at baseline and at the end of the DRPPT. RESULTS The study included 101 eyes (61 individuals; mean age54.8±9.3▒y; range30-70▒y) which showed an increase in IOP by 9.6±9.0▒mmHg (range2.3-46.7▒mmHg). From baseline to the end of the DRPPT, the mean CRVT caliber increased from 101.8±25.9▒μm to 107.7±26.6▒μm (P15▒mmHg the CRVT caliber did not change significantly (P=0.20) during the test. CONCLUSIONS A physiologic short-term IOP rise at lower levels of IOP elevation led to a widening of the CRVT, while at higher IOP values, the further IOP-rise may have compressed the retinal vein. Due to higher intraluminal pressure values, the retinal artery diameters were not affected by the IOP-rise.An 88-year-old woman with history of recent complicated pacemaker insertion presented with acute-onset malignant glaucoma recalcitrant to conservative medical therapy. Surgical intervention was discussed; however, given her complex cardiac history and recent postoperative state, the risk of anesthesia-related systemic adverse events was deemed unacceptably high. As such, a slit-lamp procedure was recommended to break the attack of malignant glaucoma. Here within, we report a novel technique of breaking an attack of malignant glaucoma by needling the anterior hyaloid face at the slit lamp. With this technique, a 25-gauge needle was entered through the pars plana and was advanced through the anterior hyaloid face, zonules, and peripheral iridotomy to create a unicameral eye and successfully break the malignant closure attack.PURPOSE To assess the efficacy and safety of a glaucoma procedure to control IOP using the adjustable eyeWatch glaucoma drainage device compared to Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) in refractory glaucoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS Monocentric, retrospective, comparative clinical trial. Patients suffering from refractory glaucoma after failed surgeries and requiring a further glaucoma procedure including an aqueous shunt were enrolled in this study. The first group AGV included patients with an AGV. The second group eW-B included patients receiving an eyeWatch used in connection with a Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI). The primary outcome was the success rate, defined as an IOP≤16▒mmHg and reduction of more than 20% from baseline, and IOP≥5▒mmHg. Secondary outcomes were mean IOP, number of anti-glaucoma medications, visual acuity, number and type of complications. RESULTS Twenty-one patients were included. The mean follow-up time was 13.2±3.4 months. In these techniques, we also used a commercially available macro lens with the phone. The patient positions his/her chin on a slit lamp biomicroscope as done during a routine slit-lamp examination. The first observer places the gonioscope over the patient's eye and projects a thin slit beam of light of the slit lamp biomicroscope along the superior or inferior gonio-mirror. A second observer records the anterior chamber angle findings using the macro lens clipped smartphone after bringing it closer to the eye of the patient. In the phone, the video mode is selected after opening the phone's camera application. In the sub-category of video mode, 1x or the wide-angle mode is chosen. Under 1x mode, the magnification is further increased to 3x to document high-quality imaging findings of angle. Similarly, in the second technique, the slit (streak) light beam of the direct ophthalmoscope was used which completely circumvented the need for a slit lamp as a source of light.

Natalizumab is approved for multiple sclerosis treatment at a dose of 300 mg every 4 weeks. Extended-interval dosing of natalizumab has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, but the efficacy of extended-interval dosing is not established. Previous models suggesting lower efficacy when initiating natalizumab treatment with extended-interval dosing rather than every-4-week dosing are inconsistent with reports from clinical observations and real-world studies conducted in patient populations switching to extended-interval dosing after a period of receiving natalizumab every 4 weeks. Here, the efficacy of natalizumab extended-interval dosing was modeled specifically in patients switching from every-4-week dosing to extended-interval dosing. Published population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models were used to simulate the distribution of alpha-4 integrin saturations for different body weight categories and dosing intervals (every 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, or 12 weeks). Generalized estimating equations relating alpha-4 integrin saturation to probability of multiple sclerosis lesion or relapse were derived from RESTORE trial data, which included patients (n = 175) who discontinued natalizumab after being treated every 4 weeks for ≥1 year and had no relapses in the year before discontinuation. The model-based simulations described indicate that every-5-week or every-6-week dosing is likely to maintain the efficacy of natalizumab, particularly at body weights less then 80 kg, in patients who switch after a period of stability on every-4-week dosing. The efficacy of natalizumab decreases as dosing intervals and body weight increase. Partial model validation was achieved in that observed outcomes in an independent clinical study were similar to those predicted by the models.
Ultra-high-field 7-Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers increased signal-to-noise and contrast-to-noise ratios, which may improve visualization of cortical malformations. We aim to assess the clinical value of in vivo structural 7T MRI and its post-processing for the noninvasive identification of epileptic brain lesions in patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy and nonlesional 3T MRI who are undergoing presurgical evaluation.

Post-processing of the 7T T1-weighted magnetization-prepared two rapid acquisition gradient echoes sequence was performed using the morphometric analysis program (MAP) with comparison to a normal database consisting of 50 healthy controls. Review of 7T was performed by an experienced board-certified neuroradiologist and at the multimodal patient management conference. The clinical significance of 7T findings was assessed based on intracranial electroencephalography (ICEEG) ictal onset, surgery, postoperative seizure outcomes, and histopathology.
Unaided visual review of 7T detected previously unappreciated subtle lesions in 22% (15/67). When aided by 7T MAP, the total yield increased to 43% (29/67). The location of the 7T-identified lesion was identical to or contained within the ICEEG ictal onset in 13 of 16 (81%). Complete resection of the 7T-identified lesion was associated with seizure freedom (P=.03). Histopathology of the 7T-identified lesions encountered mainly focal cortical dysplasia (FCD). 7T MAP yielded 25% more lesions (6/24) than 3T MAP, and showed improved conspicuity in 46% (11/24).
Our data suggest a major benefit of 7T with post-processing for detecting subtle FCD lesions for patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy and nonlesional 3T MRI.

Identifying behavioural markers of ASD risk in early infancy has the potential to facilitate early detection and intervention.

Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) is a focal epilepsy characterized by seizures occurring mostly during sleep, ranging from brief seizures with paroxysmal arousals (SPAs) to hyperkinetic seizures and ambulatory behaviors. SPAs are brief and stereotypic seizures representing the beginning of a major seizure. Distinguishing SPAs from disorders of arousal (DOAs) and their briefest episodes called simple arousal movements (SAMs) is difficult. We performed a characterization of SPAs and SAMs to identify video-polysomnographic (VPSG) features that can contribute to the diagnosis of SHE or DOA.
Fifteen SHE, 30 DOA adult patients, and 15 healthy subjects underwent full-night VPSG. Two neurologist experts in sleep disorders and epilepsy classified all the sleep-related movements and episodes recorded. For each SPAs and SAMs, sleep stage at onset, duration, limb involvement, progression, and semiology have been identified.
A total of 121 SPAs were recorded, emerging mostly during stage 1-2 non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep (median duration 5seconds).
Natalizumab is approved for multiple sclerosis treatment at a dose of 300 mg every 4 weeks. Extended-interval dosing of natalizumab has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, but the efficacy of extended-interval dosing is not established. Previous models suggesting lower efficacy when initiating natalizumab treatment with extended-interval dosing rather than every-4-week dosing are inconsistent with reports from clinical observations and real-world studies conducted in patient populations switching to extended-interval dosing after a period of receiving natalizumab every 4 weeks. Here, the efficacy of natalizumab extended-interval dosing was modeled specifically in patients switching from every-4-week dosing to extended-interval dosing. Published population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models were used to simulate the distribution of alpha-4 integrin saturations for different body weight categories and dosing intervals (every 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, or 12 weeks). Generalized estimating equations relating alpha-4 integrin saturation to probability of multiple sclerosis lesion or relapse were derived from RESTORE trial data, which included patients (n = 175) who discontinued natalizumab after being treated every 4 weeks for ≥1 year and had no relapses in the year before discontinuation. The model-based simulations described indicate that every-5-week or every-6-week dosing is likely to maintain the efficacy of natalizumab, particularly at body weights less then 80 kg, in patients who switch after a period of stability on every-4-week dosing. The efficacy of natalizumab decreases as dosing intervals and body weight increase. Partial model validation was achieved in that observed outcomes in an independent clinical study were similar to those predicted by the models. Review of 7T was performed by an experienced board-certified neuroradiologist and at the multimodal patient management conference. The clinical significance of 7T findings was assessed based on intracranial electroencephalography (ICEEG) ictal onset, surgery, postoperative seizure outcomes, and histopathology. Unaided visual review of 7T detected previously unappreciated subtle lesions in 22% (15/67). When aided by 7T MAP, the total yield increased to 43% (29/67). The location of the 7T-identified lesion was identical to or contained within the ICEEG ictal onset in 13 of 16 (81%). Complete resection of the 7T-identified lesion was associated with seizure freedom (P=.03). Histopathology of the 7T-identified lesions encountered mainly focal cortical dysplasia (FCD). 7T MAP yielded 25% more lesions (6/24) than 3T MAP, and showed improved conspicuity in 46% (11/24). Identifying behavioural markers of ASD risk in early infancy has the potential to facilitate early detection and intervention. We examined associations between infant behaviour and adolescent behaviours associated with ASD. Our study underlines the importance of the morphological design at the interface and considers PDA as a promising bioinspired material to tailor interfacial interactions.N1,N1-diallyl-N6,N6,N6-tripropylhexane-1,6-diaminium chloride (NDTHDC) and its polymer poly(N1,N1-diallyl-N6,N6,N6-tripropylhexane-1,6-diaminium chloride) (poly-NDTHDC) were synthesized and tested against API X60 carbon steel corrosion in 15 wt % HCl solution. Weight loss, electrochemical, and surface analysis techniques were used. Results show that poly-NDTHDC is better than NDTHDC. Moreover, 1000 mg/L NDTHDC protected the studied surface by 79.1% at 25 °C, while 100 mg/L poly-NDTHDC afforded 86.1% protection. Inhibition efficiency increases with temperature (up to 60 °C) but depreciates thereafter. NDTHDC and poly-NDTHDC perform better under the hydrodynamic condition than the static condition. TGA and FTIR results reveal that poly-NDTHDC is chemically and thermally stable.Studies of biosorption and bioaccumulation of heavy metals deal mostly with challenging, inhomogeneous, and complex materials. Main advantages of our approach include simple, fast, and inexpensive experiment design, nondestructive measurements, and detection limits far below 1 mg. Here, we have applied our method for three promising biosorbents (green algae, moss, and cyanobacterium) and obtained first information on the character of active compounds isolated from each species.Glucosamine, the amino sugar made from glucose, is a safe and natural reagent for post-combustion carbon dioxide capture. Its most plentiful derivative, N-acetylglucosamine (or NAG), was studied in this work with respect to its reaction kinetics in aqueous solutions. A stirred cell reactor with a flat gas-liquid interface was used, and it was found that CO2 reacts with NAG via a pathway similar to that with alkanolamines. In the 20-100 mM range of NAG concentration, the second-order rate constant at T = 308 K was 125 kmol m-3 s-1. For the 303-313 K range, the activation energy was 42 kJ mol-1. In a study on vapor-liquid equilibrium, it was found that the loading capacity of NAG (100 mM) at 303 K was 0.6 mol CO2/mol NAG, while the equilibrium partial pressure of CO2 was 0.8 kPa. Three rate promoters were tested, and piperazine showed better efficacy than monoethanolamine and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol in aqueous NAG solutions. This work is expected to stimulate further interest in this new, green CO2 capturing solvent.Three-dimensional porous carbon was fabricated using lotus leaves as a renewable precursor. The as-synthesized carbon had a high surface area (3601 m2/g), suitable O-N-S self-doping, and three-dimensional (3D) architecture with interconnected micro/meso/macropores, together with proper pore size distribution. Consequently, these admirable features endowed porous carbon as a superadsorbent for dye removal with ultrahigh adsorption capacity for rhodamine B (9444.39 mg/g) and reliable cyclability (>97% capacitance retention after 10 cycles). The adsorption of dye onto the as-prepared carbon was a spontaneous endothermic process and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The π-π stacking, hydrogen bond, and acid-base interactions were proposed to mainly account for the combination of the adsorbate and the adsorbent. Overall, these values indicated the high-performance biomass-derived carbon as a dye adsorbent and may boost the large-scale production and application of 3D hierarchical porous carbon with heteroatom doping in the field of wastewater treatment.Forensic chemistry is an important and rapidly growing branch of analytical chemistry. Different donor age groups were found to have different levels of lipids, glucose, and proteins in whole blood, although the corresponding spectral differences were minor. Therefore, the collected data set was analyzed using chemometrics to enhance discrepancy and assist in donors' classification. After formation by electrical arc discharge, the resulting radiofullerenes on the Al disk were dissolved in toluene under anaerobic conditions and converted to a malonate derivative using the Bingel reaction. Subsequent to repeated washings of the organic phase with dilute acidic solutions to remove exohedral 225Ac, ∼45% of 225Ac activity was retained in the organic phase, which resisted extraction into the aqueous phase. Failure to extract the 225Ac from the organic phase provided definitive evidence that the 225Ac is located inside of the fullerene. The formation of 225Ac@C60 was further confirmed using a classical hot-atom chemistry technique in which the organic phase containing purified endohedral 225Ac@C60 malonate was contacted with fresh dilute acid to repeatedly extract the ionic 4.

Heterodimeric motor organization of kinesin-II is essential for its function in anterograde IFT in ciliogenesis. However, the underlying mechanism is not well understood. In addition, the anterograde IFT velocity varies significantly in different organisms, but how this velocity affects ciliary length is not clear. We show that in Chlamydomonas motors are only stable as heterodimers in vivo, which is likely the key factor for the requirement of a heterodimer for IFT. Second, chimeric CrKinesin-II with human kinesin-II motor domains functioned in vitro and in vivo, leading to a ~ 2.8 fold reduced anterograde IFT velocity and a similar fold reduction in IFT injection rate that supposedly correlates with ciliary assembly activity. However, the ciliary length was only mildly reduced (~15%). Modeling analysis suggests a nonlinear scaling relationship between IFT velocity and ciliary length that can be accounted for by limitation of the motors and/or its ciliary cargoes, e.g. tubulin.Genetic analyses and systematic mutagenesis have revealed that synonymous, non-synonymous and intronic mutations frequently alter the inclusion levels of alternatively spliced exons, consistent with the concept that altered splicing might be a common mechanism by which mutations cause disease. However, most exons expressed in any cell are highly-included in mature mRNAs. Here, by performing deep mutagenesis of highly-included exons and by analysing the association between genome sequence variation and exon inclusion across the transcriptome, we report that mutations only very rarely alter the inclusion of highly-included exons. This is true for both exonic and intronic mutations as well as for perturbations in trans. Therefore, mutations that affect splicing are not evenly distributed across primary transcripts but are focussed in and around alternatively spliced exons with intermediate inclusion levels. These results provide a resource for prioritising synonymous and other variants as disease-causing mutations.Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are often associated with polysomes, indicating coding potential. However, only a handful of endogenous proteins encoded by putative lncRNAs have been identified and assigned a function. Here, we report the discovery of a putative gastrointestinal-tract-specific lncRNA (LINC00675) that is regulated by the pioneer transcription factor FOXA1 and encodes a conserved small protein of 79 amino acids which we termed FORCP (FOXA1-Regulated Conserved Small Protein). FORCP transcript is undetectable in most cell types but is abundant in well-differentiated colorectal cancer (CRC) cells where it functions to inhibit proliferation, clonogenicity, and tumorigenesis. The epitope-tagged and endogenous FORCP protein predominantly localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In response to ER stress, FORCP depletion results in decreased apoptosis. Our findings on the initial characterization of FORCP demonstrate that FORCP is a novel, conserved small protein encoded by a mis-annotated lncRNA that regulates apoptosis and tumorigenicity in well-differentiated CRC cells.Research careers are typically envisioned as a single path in which a scientist starts as a member of a team working under the guidance of one or more experienced scientists and, if they are successful, ends with the individual leading their own research group and training future generations of scientists. Here we study the author contribution statements of published research papers in order to explore possible biases and disparities in career trajectories in science. We used Bayesian networks to train a prediction model based on a dataset of 70,694 publications from PLoS journals, which included 347,136 distinct authors and their associated contribution statements. This model was used to predict the contributions of 222,925 authors in 6,236,239 publications, and to apply a robust archetypal analysis to profile scientists across four career stages junior, early-career, mid-career and late-career. All three of the archetypes we found - leader, specialized, and supporting - were encountered for early-career and mid-career researchers. Junior researchers displayed only two archetypes (specialized, and supporting), as did late-career researchers (leader and supporting). Scientists assigned to the leader and specialized archetypes tended to have longer careers than those assigned to the supporting archetype. We also observed consistent gender bias at all stages the majority of male scientists belonged to the leader archetype, while the larger proportion of women belonged to the specialized archetype, especially for early-career and mid-career researchers.Subcellular lumen formation by single-cells involves complex cytoskeletal remodelling. Here, we have identified that the spectraplakin Short-stop (Shot) promotes the crosstalk between MTs and actin, which leads to the extension and guidance of the subcellular lumen within the tracheal terminal cell (TC) cytoplasm. Shot is enriched in cells undergoing the initial steps of subcellular branching as a direct response to FGF signalling. An excess of Shot induces ectopic acentrosomal luminal branching points in the embryonic and larval tracheal TC leading to cells with extra-subcellular lumina. These data provide the first evidence for a role for spectraplakins in single-cell lumen formation and branching.The interferon-inducible transmembrane (IFITM) proteins belong to the Dispanin/CD225 family and inhibit diverse virus infections. IFITM3 reduces membrane fusion between cells and virions through a poorly characterized mechanism. Mutation of proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 (PRRT2), a regulator of neurotransmitter release, at glycine-305 was previously linked to paroxysmal neurological disorders in humans. Here, we show that glycine-305 and the homologous site in IFITM3, glycine-95, drive protein oligomerization from within a GxxxG motif. Mutation of glycine-95 (and to a lesser extent, glycine-91) disrupted IFITM3 oligomerization and reduced its antiviral activity against Influenza A virus. An oligomerization-defective variant was used to reveal that IFITM3 promotes membrane rigidity in a glycine-95-dependent and amphipathic helix-dependent manner. Second, chimeric CrKinesin-II with human kinesin-II motor domains functioned in vitro and in vivo, leading to a ~ 2.8 fold reduced anterograde IFT velocity and a similar fold reduction in IFT injection rate that supposedly correlates with ciliary assembly activity. Here, by performing deep mutagenesis of highly-included exons and by analysing the association between genome sequence variation and exon inclusion across the transcriptome, we report that mutations only very rarely alter the inclusion of highly-included exons. This is true for both exonic and intronic mutations as well as for perturbations in trans. Therefore, mutations that affect splicing are not evenly distributed across primary transcripts but are focussed in and around alternatively spliced exons with intermediate inclusion levels. FORCP transcript is undetectable in most cell types but is abundant in well-differentiated colorectal cancer (CRC) cells where it functions to inhibit proliferation, clonogenicity, and tumorigenesis. The epitope-tagged and endogenous FORCP protein predominantly localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In response to ER stress, FORCP depletion results in decreased apoptosis. Here we study the author contribution statements of published research papers in order to explore possible biases and disparities in career trajectories in science. We used Bayesian networks to train a prediction model based on a dataset of 70,694 publications from PLoS journals, which included 347,136 distinct authors and their associated contribution statements. This model was used to predict the contributions of 222,925 authors in 6,236,239 publications, and to apply a robust archetypal analysis to profile scientists across four career stages junior, early-career, mid-career and late-career. All three of the archetypes we found - leader, specialized, and supporting - were encountered for early-career and mid-career researchers. Junior researchers displayed only two archetypes (specialized, and supporting), as did late-career researchers (leader and supporting). Scientists assigned to the leader and specialized archetypes tended to have longer careers than those assigned to the supporting archetype. We also observed consistent gender bias at all stages the majority of male scientists belonged to the leader archetype, while the larger proportion of women belonged to the specialized archetype, especially for early-career and mid-career researchers.Subcellular lumen formation by single-cells involves complex cytoskeletal remodelling. Peri-implantitis treatment is a very challenging topic to discuss. What is certain is that preventive/supportive therapy plays a key-role in peri-implant tissues' health maintenance and non-surgical implant surface mechanical debridement remains one of the solid pillars in the therapeutic pathway. In this perspective, many surface decontaminating methods have been proposed and tested to remove hard and soft bacterial deposits. The aim of this study was to compare four different commonly used non-surgical implant debridement methods in terms of cleaning potential in vitro, using a peri-implant pocket-simulating model.
Sixty-four dental implants were ink-stained and placed into a simulated peri-implant pocket. Samples were then divided into four groups and treated with different debridement methods stainless-steel ultrasonic tip (PS), peek-coated ultrasonic tip (PI), sub-gingival air-polishing with erythritol powder (EHX) and sub-gingival air-polishing with glycine powder (GLY). For each treatment group, ha-polishing therapy represents the best one in terms of ink removal from the implant surface. Furthermore, increasing the treatment time to 45 seconds, air-polishing resulted considerably more efficient.

These indicators where used for monitoring purposes, orienting strategies, operational decision-making, communication and research. The challenges encountered throughout this process underline the importance of anticipation and considering the function of a crisis information system, ideally integrating these elements into pandemic preparedness plans.Chemotherapy is associated with transient or permanent cognitive dysfunction ranging from subjective complaints to measurable deficits in working memory, attention and language. Given that old age may be related to cognitive decline, the interaction between chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment and the effects of age is of growing concern in view of our aging population. Chemotherapy-associated cognitive dysfunction may have an additive impact on pre-existing age-related cognitive performance decline, which calls for awareness in its detection, to reduce impact on quality of life and improve management of older patients. We discuss here the « chemobrain », concept, review the existing evidence about pathophysiology, neuroimaging and cognitive phenotype and propose practical tools for routine detection in the outpatient setting.Deprescribing, in order to reduce both polypharmacy and the use of potentially inappropriate medications, remains a challenge, especially in nursing homes. Healthcare professionals perceive residents of these homes as wary of change and reluctant to take part in such endeavours. The results of two studies, one qualitative and the other quantitative, show that, on the contrary, nursing home residents and their relatives would be ready to consider a treatment reduction, provided that time is invested to explain the expected benefits of such changes.For a patient, the daily preparation and self-administration of medication require a wide range of cognitive and social skills these skills fall under the concept of medication literacy. Individuals with insufficient skills have difficulties to understand instructions from professionals, to communicate their concerns and are at greater risk of inappropriate use of their medications. In this new area of research, standardised instruments have been developed but their conceptual basis lacks consensus and none have been designed for older patients and their specificities. This article proposes some benchmarks so that physicians, pharmacists and nurses can better understand this concept and identify patients with difficulties.

The Manageable Geriatric Assessment (MAGIC) questionnaire, recently developed by a group of European family doctors for multidimensional geriatric assessment in primary care, has not yet been evaluated in clinical practice. The objectives of this study were to translate and adapt it to Spanish and to check the association between the limitations of older adults identified by this questionnaire and their perceived health status assessed by the five-level version of the EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D-5L). First, questionnaire translation, **** translation and cognitive test were applied. Then, a cross-sectional observational study was performed in two Spanish health centers Galicia, Spain. Participants were 170 people aged over 75, recruited opportunistically by consecutive case sampling. Anonymous surveys were used to collect data. The MAGIC questionnaire, the EQ-5D-5L scale, age and sex were employed. The visual analog scale of EQ-5D-5L (EQ VAS) was used as the outcome variable. Descriptive and bivariate analyses by sex and outcome variable are presented. The linear regression analysis showed an association with quality of life for daily activities, recognizing people and stress incontinence. As this is associated with quality of life, the MAGIC questionnaire may be useful in primary care and a study to investigate the impact on health with a clinical trial would be worth considering.A 32-year-old man was referred to the Division of Orthodontics of the University of Naples "Federico II", with a 15-year history of gradually increasing right-sided facial asymmetry. Clinical and radiological examinations was consistent to hemimandibular hyperplasia, a rare developmental asymmetry characterized by three-dimensional enlargement of one-half of the mandible. The standard surgical-orthodontic management was proposed to the patient. However, he refused to undergo bimaxillary orthognatic surgery. Therefore, a different treatment was proposed based on the orthodontic technique of pre-surgical decompensation and post-surgical refinement used in bimaxillary orthognatic surgery planning, and surgical intervention with a condylectomy. The dental arches were evenly levelled out with a multi-bracket treatment and then the condylectomy was performed. Orthodontic treatment continued with a levelling and torque control by 0.19 × 0.25 SS arch and physiotherapy. At the three-month follow-up, the patient showed anterior and posterior bite rebalancing, arch intercuspation recovery, and anterior open bite closure due to muscular self-rebalancing. The two-year follow-up showed regular mandibular dynamic, orthodontic appliances were removed, and the patient was instructed to wear retainer for the following months. The final result was aesthetically reasonable for the patient, although slight asymmetry of the chin persisted.(1) Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma is common in Africa and has a male preponderance. The gender-based differences in clinical presentation and risk factor exposure are poorly studied in the African context. Our aim was to compare males and females with this disease. We analyzed the differences in clinical features and risk factor exposure between males and females with oesophageal cancer. (2) Data from patients presenting to a tertiary hospital in South Africa with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma were analyzed. Data collected included patient demographics, clinical presentation, pathology and risk factor exposure. (3) Three hundred and sixty three patients were included in the study. The male to female ratio was 1.41. The mean age was 66 years for females and 61 years for males (p less then 0.0001). A significantly larger percentage of males were underweight compared to females (60% vs. 32%, p less then 0.001). There were no differences between the genders with regards to performance status, dysphagia grade and duration and tumor length, location and degree of differentiation. There were significant differences between risk factor exposure between the two genders. Smoking and alcohol consumption was an association in more than 70% of males but in less than 10% of females There was no difference survival. (4) Female patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are older and have a higher body mass index (BMI) than their male counterparts. Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and volume flow (VF) values for maintaining a patent AV circuit are undefined; therefore, guidance about when a reintervention should be performed is lacking. The objective of this study was to interpret post-pDVA PSV and VF values in relation to AV circuit preservation. This was performed by analyzing DUS results of 22 post-pDVA patients. A total of 670 PSV and 623 VF measurements were collected. A PSV value of ≤55 cm/s and a VF value of ≤195 mL/min were found predictive for failure. The reliability of PSV and VF measurements in patent AV-circuits was good (intraclass correlation coefficient; PSV, 0.85; VF, 0.88). In conclusion, this study is the first to analyze DUS measurements in post-pDVA patients and showed that DUS can be used to anticipate for failure.
