A Ureteral Stents, also known as a ureteric stent, is a thin tube that is put into the ureter to prevent or treat obstruction of urine flow from the kidney. Stents used in adult patients range in length from 24 to 30 cm. Furthermore, stents are available in various diameters or gauges to accommodate varying ureter sizes. A cystoscope is typically used to implant the stent. A JJ stent, double J stent, or pig-tail stent is one that has one or both ends coiled to keep it from moving out of place.

Ureteral Stents are used to maintain the openness of a ureter, which may be affected by a kidney stone or a treatment, for example. This approach is occasionally used as a stopgap solution to prevent kidney damage until a treatment to remove the stone can be performed. Indwelling times of 12 months or longer are recommended to keep ureters open that have been squeezed by tumours in the ureter's vicinity or tumours in the ureter itself. Because these tumours are often inoperable, stents are placed to facilitate urine outflow through the ureter. The kidney might be harmed if drainage is hindered for an extended period of time.
