Independent LABS found "alarming" cancer-causing chemical in more types of dry cleaning products, the report said

High levels of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, have been detected in more brands and batches of dry cleaning products, according to a new report from Valisure, an independent lab.

Just last month, certain aerosol dry shampoos-including some Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI, and TRESemme products-were subject to a voluntary recall due to the possible presence of benzene.

In a citizen petition, Valisure filed with the FDA on Monday, the lab described how 70 percent of test samples from 148 lots of dry shampoo products from 34 different brands showed "quantifiable" benzene levels.

According to their report, 11 samples had levels more than 10 times the FDA's limit of 2 parts per million (ppm) for the drug.

"However, the dry shampoo tested was not a medicine and did not contain active pharmaceutical ingredients used for therapeutic purposes; Therefore, any significant test for benzene may be considered unacceptable. In addition, Valisure showed data for benzene analysis by sampling contaminated air directly after spraying dry shampoo products, indicating the possibility of short - and long-term inhalation exposure to high levels of benzene. "The finding that this known human carcinogen is present in dry shampoo products that are often used indoors in large quantities is particularly troubling," Valisure CEO David Light and Qian Wu, Valisure's global head of analytics, wrote in the FDA citizen petition.

The petition urges the FDA to "promptly require a recall" of affected batches of products containing benzene and to better determine benzene contamination limits for other products.
