The Golan Heights is formerly part of Syria and it's been occupied by Israel because 1967 following the Six Day War. It had been taken because it is geostrategic location, it is just a situtated on a very fertile volcanic airplane and provides wine and beef for the Israeli market. It's main significance is really as an important supply of water for Israel. Maybe not all of the Golan Levels was occupied - about 30% of the area remains section of Syria and contains around 40 Syrian towns.

Israel transferred the Golan Heights Law on 14th December 1981 which applied Israeli "regulations, jurisdiction and administration" to the Golan Heights. That activity was condemned by UN Security Council Decision 242 which emphasised the inadmissibility of the exchange of terrain by conflict and further presented that a only and lasting peace required the withdrawal of Israeli armed allows from areas entertained in the recent conflict. UN Resolution 497 stated that the Golan Heights Legislation 1981 was null and void. The Golan Levels area is currently governed by global humanitarian legislation, the Geneva Events and traditional international law.

In 1967 several individuals were displaced and villages were depopulated largely after the preventing had ceased. Entire villages were ruined and the Israelis developed new settlements on top of the old villages. Between 80,000 and 130,000 Arab Druze and Circassians fled and 7,000 stayed in the Israeli occupied territory. Israel has not allowed former residents to return stating security reasons. That is unlike the phrases of the Next Geneva Convention. Article 147 proivdes "the unlawful deportation /transfer of an individual and the appropriation of home is not validated unless by military necessity. Report 23(g) of the Hague Rules offers that it's forbidden to destroy/seize the enemy's house until such destruction or seizure be imperatively required by the necessities of war.

Successive Israeli Governments have considered an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan inturn for the normalisation of relations with Syria. The US brokered negotiations between the 2 in 1999-2000 but didn't achieve a resolution. The matter arose again in 2006 war wherever Iranian supported Hezbollah guerrillas took portion in the Lebanese war. In May possibly 2009 Benjamin Netanyahu, said that Israel would not give up the Golan because if it turned Iran's entrance point then this would threaten the entire state of נופש בגולן .
