Semi-synthetic fabric called Lyocell is frequently used as an alternative to cotton or silk. This fabric is a type of rayon, and the main ingredient is cellulose, which comes from wood.  Lyocell, which was created by American Enka in 1972, gained popularity in the latter decades of the 20th century and is still widely used today. This fabric is viewed as a more ecological option to wholly synthetic fibres like polyester because it is mostly made from organic materials, yet it is debatable whether or not lyocell fabric is actually healthier for the environment.

At American Enka, the development of Lyocell Fabric was only completed up until the pilot stage. A British company by the name of Courtaulds Fibres didn't pick up the pieces until the 1980s, when they developed a new fabric called Tencel based on lyocell research. The phrases Tencel and lyocell can be used interchangeably because these two fabrics are essentially the same chemically.
