With the current brow trend being full and dramatic, we’re always looking for ways to help them appear thicker and more lush. One of the easiest yet most effective techniques is using a brow soap. The technique uses soap to grip every single hair in place, giving the brows a lifted and laminated look without looking too pressed or fake.

“You can use a regular liquid soap or even a body wash, but I prefer a glycerin-based eyebrow soap,” explains makeup artist and YouTuber Judi Gabbay. “The best products contain a high concentration of glycerin, which makes the brows appear a little more dense.” And it’s not only glycerin that helps give your brows a fuller appearance, but it also acts as a conditioner for the delicate strands and prevents them from drying out.

To achieve the look, you’ll need a transparent soap that contains glycerin, a spoolie, and water or a face mist to activate the product. First, lightly dampen the spoolie brush (which looks like a mascara wand or an eyebrow gel brush) and dip it into the soap. “You want to get the product slightly wet, but not so wet that it suds up or creates a white cast on the brows,” explains celebrity brow specialist Joey Healy.

You’ll then run the spoolie brush over your brows to evenly distribute the product. If you over-apply the soap, gently wipe off any excess with your finger and apply more as needed.

Once the brow soap has set, it stays in place all day. But just beware that if you sweat a lot or are in humid weather, the product may melt and run down your brows into your eyes. “That’s why I suggest only doing this before an important event,” says Gabbay.

Another benefit of brow soap is that it’s super easy to remove, just like your favorite brow pencil or powder. It comes off with water or a setting spray, making it an ideal option for a quick, on-the-go beauty routine. And since the spoolie brushes are usually very soft, you won’t run into any pulls or tangles while trying to clean off your brows.

One word of caution, though: Because normal soap wasn’t designed to stay on the skin, it can cause dryness and irritation, especially around the brow area. For this reason, some people choose to try a specially designed brow soap that’s made with the skin and brows in mind such as this one from Trace Cosmetics.

Soap brows can also be a helpful tool for identifying stray hairs that might need to be plucked. With the brows all nicely positioned, you can easily see any that are above or below your brow line so you can pluck them with confidence—no more over-plucking! But if you’re worried about your brows looking too “done,” you can always add an extra coat of glycerin-based brow powder to seal the deal. The brows will feel like they’re still natural, but with added definition and hold that lasts all day long.
