In many run-of-the-river irrigation schemes, water demand seldom matches the unreliable streamflows of rivers, and this can have serious consequences for paddy farmers in the long term. Thus, a proper understanding of climate change impacts on Bernam River flows is critical for future water allocations for paddy farming in this basin.

This study uses a physically-based, flow-through model to simulate the impact of future climate scenarios on the Bernam River Basin. Historical gridded hydro-meteorological data are used to setup the SWAT model, and sensitivity analysis is conducted for the various parameters that influence streamflows in this basin. The results show that future climate changes are expected to lead to warmer periods, especially during the dry season, with a more variable rainfall distribution pattern in the basin.one bernam
