Emergence of a New Transport Mode
E-Rickshaw first emerged in the early 2010s as a viable alternative to the manually-powered cycle Rickshaw. Their arrival came as a blessing to many rickshaw-pullers struggling with rising costs and health issues due to strenuous working conditions. E-Rickshaw are not just easy to operate but also help save costs in the long run due to lower operating and maintenance expenses compared to auto-Rickshaw or other vehicles.

Within a short span, e-Rickshaw have proliferated across small towns and cities. They particularly thrive in dense urban localities with narrow lanes where other motorized vehicles find it difficult to maneuver. According to industry estimates, over 5 lakh e-Rickshaw are plying on Indian roads today, providing affordable last-mile connectivity. States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal have witnessed the largest adoption driven by their widespread use for commute as well as cargo transportation.

Addressing the Challenge of Urbanization
Rapid urbanization in India has put tremendous pressure on urban transport systems. While metro and bus services have expanded in major cities, there still remains a gap in addressing the first and last-mile connectivity needs. This is where e-Rickshaw have stepped in as a pragmatic solution. Their ability to navigate through traffic congestion and narrow by-lanes makes them an ideal mode for short commute distances within cities and towns.

E-Rickshaw have emerged as a lifeline for daily commuters in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati where last-mile connectivity remains a challenge. They efficiently complement other modes of public transport by ferrying people to and from bus stops and metro stations. This has significantly boosted the effective catchment areas of buses and metros. At the same time, e-Rickshaw are supporting the livelihood of thousands by offering flexible job opportunities as drivers or for cargo transportation.

The Environmental Impact
One of the major drivers for the growing popularity of e-Rickshaw is their ability to reduce air and noise pollution levels in urban areas. As electric vehicles, they do not emit harmful gases like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide from their operation. This makes them far more environmentally friendly than CNG auto-Rickshaw or diesel vehicles that continue to ply in large numbers in Indian cities.

It is estimated that replacing one auto-rickshaw with an e-rickshaw can help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1.2 tonnes annually. Considering their rising numbers, e-Rickshaw are cumulatively making a sizable dent in vehicular emissions across regions. At the same time, they produce very little noise in comparison to honking auto-Rickshaw, helping reduce noise pollution levels on urban roads. This makes them a preferred commute option for many environmentally conscious city residents.

Problems and Challenges
While the e-rickshaw segment has seen rapid progress, a few concerns continue to plague its growth. Limited driving range of 50-80 km per charge remains one of the main issues, restricting their usage for long-distance transportation. High buying costs compared to cycle Rickshaw also pose challenges for many entrepreneurs interested in this business.

Lack of standardized specifications and safety regulations has led to the proliferation of low-quality e-Rickshaw which compromise on factors like maximum speed and payload capacity. This has increased risks of accidents. Absence of dedicated lanes, parking spaces, and charging infrastructure in many cities adds to the operational difficulties for e-rickshaw drivers.

Stringent policies in cities like Delhi that do not allow e-Rickshaw to ply on all roads have also adversely impacted their growth. Unfortunately, lack of awareness about traffic rules has led some drivers to flout regulations which has aggravated issues. Addressing these barriers through policy interventions and infrastructure development is the need of the hour to sustain the momentum of e-rickshaw adoption.
