There are three main types of chargers for Electric Vehicle Charger - Level 1, Level 2, and DC Fast Chargers. Level 1 chargers simply plug into a standard 120V outlet and provide around 3-5 miles of range per hour of charging. They are suited for long duration charges at homes. Level 2 chargers provide a 240V outlet and can charge most EVs 10-20 miles of range per hour depending on the vehicle and charger specs. They are common at workplaces, public parking lots, and some homes. Lastly, DC Fast Chargers can add tens of miles of range to a vehicle within just minutes of charging by using high-powered 400-600V direct current. Fast chargers are essential for long distance travel and are primarily installed at fueling stations and along major highway corridors.

As infrastructure expands in the coming years, barriers to EV adoption will continue to fall. Most Americans drive less than 40 miles per day, well within the range of many EVs. For occasional road trips, fast chargers are being deployed every 50 miles along major highways. Battery and vehicle technology are also advancing rapidly with some cars approaching 400 miles of range between charges. With abundant public and workplace stations within cities, charging will become as convenient as refueling gasoline cars for the vast majority of drivers. Industry alliances are also developing common international charging standards. As a result, electric vehicles will become a highly viable and affordable option matched with the right public infrastructure enabling the confidence of long-distance travel for all drivers. The deployment of high-powered fast and Level 2 chargers nationwide will be a major catalyst in accelerating the mass adoption of electric vehicles.
