Every day, a substantial portion of Wikipedia is removed. Uncover it, a word at a time.

Part of what makes Wordle so famous and so clone-able is that it's a basic game where you have six guesses to find the answer. It's a bite-sized problem you can spend a few minutes puzzling over before going on with your day (unless you want to use Wordlebot to describe in great detail how stupid each of your choices was).

But maybe you're searching for something a little tougher, a daily guessing game where you might guess dozens if not hundreds of times and yet not even stumble into the solution? Let me know whether you're more of a guesser.

Redactle Unlimited offers you a Wikipedia article each day. To be explicit, an entire Wikipedia article, from top to bottom, is selected from Wikipedia's own list of "Vital articles," which has slightly over 10,000 entries. As a result, almost all of the article's words have been censored, making it difficult to determine which article you're looking at. Predict a word correctly and it'll be revealed, and if you've uncovered a whole heck of a lot of words you may be able to really guess the topic of the article. But we're talking about lots and lots, and lots of guesses initially.

Words that have been obscured aren't all of them. There are a few prepositions and articles like is and it as well as certain punctuation marks that are shown, but that doesn't do much to aid comprehension when the majority of the text is obscured. In the end, you may uncover a line or two that hints at the true content of the redacted Wikipedia page by gradually and methodically removing words from their hiding places.

As soon as you find a term, it will be highlighted in the sidebar, and clicking on it will take you directly to each place where it occurs in the article, similar to a text search. Another button enables you easily bounce back up to the top of the page. I have pounded away at Redactle on two separate days before ultimately giving up after approximately fifty guesses, even after revealing a number of terms. It may take a while for those of you with longer attention spans, but I'm sure those of you who are serious puzzle-busters will love guessing until they get it right, no matter how long it takes. I've seen folks on Twitter who have solved a problem in less than 40 guesses, and others with over 300. Try it out and see where it takes you.

Semantle is another Wordle-inspired puzzle game where your guesses might easily number in the dozens or even hundreds before you solve it reminds me a lot of Redactle (or give up). In that daily game, you're attempting to uncover the hidden word by guessing terms with a similar meaning, rather than by spelling. If you find Redactle and Semantle too taxing, look at our selection of the finest Wordle alternatives.
