Electric Coolant Pumps Procurement Intelligence

In this electric coolant pumps procurement intelligence report, we have estimated the pricing of the key cost components. We have found in our research that raw materials, technology - engineering - design, machinery - electronics - motor, labor, facilities, transportation, and distribution are some of the important cost components in this category. Different raw materials can be used to manufacture e-pumps such as plastics, metals, aluminum, stainless steel, etc. Factors such as customization, rotor, and impeller material, and emission requirement standards can increase the production costs for the companies.  Recently, OEM manufacturers and many automotive parts producers prefer carbon fiber-reinforced plastic materials for their electric pump production due to their high durability, superior thermal management, and lightweight and compact design. The composite materials are chosen over aluminum ones.

In H1 2023, prices of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) in Asia witnessed a decrease due to weak market sentiment for feedstock materials. Prices of feedstock materials were on the lower side due to low demand from the downstream sectors and ample inventory levels. In Q2 2023, the trading activities in Asia were impacted negatively as Asian currencies were challenged by the U.S. dollar. As of September 2023, the two biggest trading partners of the U.S. - China and Japan, have seen their currencies drop to 10-month lows versus the dollar. During the second quarter itself, the Chinese CRFP market remained closed due to the onset of the Dragon Boat Festival which thereby hampered the CRFP prices. However, the demand for passenger and electric vehicles remained high for H1 2023 compared to H1 2022 throughout the region. The automobile production and sales in China reached 2.56 million and 2.62 million units, respectively, by the end of H1 2023. As a result, the prices of e-pumps remained steady for the period in Asia.

Electronics and motor components are another important cost in this category. Prices of these components (such as rotors, coils, stators, motors, etc.) are also impacted by changes in the semiconductor manufacturing sector. For instance, electronic components prices have increased steadily in 2022 owing to a 4% increase in semiconductor prices. The high inflation rates in the U.S. and producers ramping up the production of the chips to meet consumer demand at a more expensive rate contributed to the price hikes. In June 2023, The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced further spikes in the prices of semiconductors, between 3 - 6% for its most advanced products which is expected to start in January 2024. At the start of 2023, TSMC increased semiconductor prices between 0.4% and 1% for subsequent months till the end of H1 2023 owing to higher manufacturing costs and supply chain challenges amid high demand. All these factors have in turn increased the costs for producing electric pumps.

Rate Benchmarking

The geographical location, scale of business, transportation and logistics, type of business, and order volumes play a vital factor in analyzing the rate benchmarking of the electric coolant pumps category.

Geographical considerations can affect prices by impacting local costs associated with conducting business, such as the cost of labor, the cost of raw materials, and manufacturing activity. China is one of the largest automotive manufacturing country and accounts for almost 30 – 32% of the global vehicle production, which exceeds Europe, the U.S., and Japan combined. As of May 2023, industry leaders are investing heavily in both newly founded car OEMs and state-owned automotive enterprises in China. The labor force in China is also among the largest in the world. Hence, the cost of labor in China is significantly lower than in the U.S. and Europe. For instance, in China, the salary of automotive engineers is around USD 20 – 30 per hour compared to automotive engineers in the U.S., where it is around USD 50 – 70 per hour. In China, the wide presence of automotive parts suppliers also brings down the cost of e-pump production.

Similarly, in terms of transportation and logistics, the demand is presently stable and there are no supply chain issues when shipping from China to the majority of areas (as of July 2023). The most affordable rates for transporting 20-foot FCL containers from China to North America include the following: Rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles start around USD 1,100 and from Yatian to Prince Rupert, it starts from around USD 900 (as of July 2023).
