What is Bead Wire?

It is a crucial component used in tire manufacturing that holds the bead of the tire securely against the wheel rim. It is a high tensile strength steel wire that is wound in layers around the inner circumference of the tire. The bead area of the tire must withstand significant pressure and stresses from impacts when driving. It provides the strength and flexibility needed to achieve an air-tight seal against the rim.

Manufacturing Process

Production of these wire involves several specialized processes. High carbon steel wire is the primary raw material input. The wire undergoes cold drawing to reduce the diameter and increase tensile strength through work hardening. These bundles are oil tempered and tempered to further boost mechanical properties like tension strength, hardness and flexibility. Automatic quality checks verify dimensional accuracy and mechanical characteristics at each stage.

Key properties of these wire include high tensile strength over 1000MPa, fatigue and impact resistance. It must withstand extreme stresses during rolling, braking and cornering maneuvers. It is tested rigorously to validate these properties. Static tensile tests measure maximum load capacity and elasticity. Fatigue tests involve repeated cyclic loading to evaluate endurance under real world operating conditions. Low cycle tests induce failure quickly while high cycle tests last longer.

Impact and drop tests quantify energy absorption during impacts from potholes, curbs etc. All these confirm bead wire longevity through the expected tire usage lifespan. Metallurgical analysis of test samples provides insights into failure mechanisms. Based on such validation, wire specifications are optimized for different tire applications and load ratings. Close dimensional checks also ensure consistent sealing performance.
