Technical Insulation - Keeping Equipment and Systems Safe and Efficient

Technical insulation refers to the application of insulation materials to industrial and commercial equipment and systems for temperature control and prevention of heat loss. Insulation helps maintain optimal operating temperatures in equipment and piping while also reducing energy costs through reduced heat transfer. It plays a vital role in process plant, power generation, oil and gas, cold storage facilities and other industries where thermal efficiency and personnel safety are priorities.
Types of Technical insularism Materials
There are different types of materials used for Technical Insulation depending on the temperature ranges and application requirements. Some common insulation materials include:
Mineral Wool - Made from basalt rock and slag, mineral wool comes in blankets, boards and pre-formed pipe sections. It is lightweight and provides insulation efficiency up to 650°C. Mineral wool absorbs very little moisture and has good fire resistance.
Cellular Glass - Formed by injecting air into molten glass, cellular glass has an open-pored structure that yields extremely low thermal conductivity. It can withstand temperatures up to 760°C and has excellent long-term stability. However, it is more expensive than mineral wool.
Calcium Silicate - Composed primarily of calcium, silicon and oxygen, calcium silicate insulation has good insulating properties up to 1000°C. It does not burn or melt but may crack or spall off equipment at very high temperatures. Calcium silicate is commonly used on hot process equipment, boilers and furnaces.
Flexible Elastomeric Foam - Made of closed-cell rubber/plastic foam, flexible elastomeric foam sheets provide vibration damping and allow for expansion/contraction during temperature changes. They can withstand temperatures up to 150°C and are frequently used to insulate piping and ductwork.
