If you’re someone that loves to travel, you’re going to love reading this guide. Especially after you’ve moved to Oakland, CA. While you might be in the planning stages, you may be wondering what places you can go to by car for a weekend road trip.

The good news is that we’ve put together this guide of three of the best destinations. While we don’t want you spending a lot of time on the road, we’ve made sure these trips had a driving time of at least three hours or less. Let’s buckle up and hit the road with the list below.

  1. Napa Valley

If you love wine, it’s obvious you’ll want to head on over to the “Wine Capital of the World” (or at least we think it is). This place is just an hour’s drive from the doorstep of many one bedroom apartments in Oakland. It’s easily accessible through several different highways in and around Oakland including State Route 121 and Interstate 80.

Whichever highway you prefer, it will get you there in almost the same amount of time. Of course, you also want to be mindful of the traffic conditions. It may hinder your driving time so plan ahead and get on the road early if you don’t want to spend the entire day on the road.

  1. Big Sur

This one will be at least 3 hours. You’ll be traveling down US 101, Interstate 880, and finally the legendary Pacific Coast Highway. Big Sur features beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean, plenty of redwoods, and miles upon miles of beaches. You get to enjoy a California experience like no other.

If you love the beach, nature, and want to get away somewhere for relaxation, the Big Sur could be your go-to destination. There are plenty of state parks to check out as well for all the outdoor activities you love to do like hiking, biking, and others.

  1. Santa Cruz

Our final road trip destination is also close to the water. But if you want to get there in half the amount of time it takes to get to Big Sur, Santa Cruz is the place. You’ll be driving through much of the East Bay region including San Jose.

They have plenty of beaches where you can relax. Plus, they have a boardwalk that is filled with food, fun, and a whole lot more. If you’re up for it, you’re also not far from the PCH - meaning a nice opportunity to explore the coast as well.
