The sound

There's a lot to like here, especially for fans of hard rock. The drums are loud and clear and the guitars ring with a cool, menacing tone. But the best part about this track is that it doesn't rely on swagger and attitude to sell its message.

Instead, the band draws from the aesthetics of cyberpunk and synthwave to weave a post-apocalyptic fantasy that's both visually and aurally striking. Whether you're a fan of those genres or not, Hit 77 has something to offer everyone.

The music

The album has a lot of energy to offer and is enjoyable from start to finish. The brothers Valeta play with creative yet unfussy guitars never over indulgent and with LG’s voice adding a Bon Scott style that goes beyond a mere impression the homage is complete. The bass and controlled drums from Mr Raw and Johnnie Dolphin add the right amount of power to the sound. For fans of AC/DC and hard rock this will be a satisfying listen with plenty to excite.

The band

As you might guess from the name of the band they cover all the hits you’d hear on your FM dial back in 1977 (plus some from 1978, 1979 and a little from the early 80’s just to be sure). They do it with an absolute mastery of the genre. They have a perfect fusion of technical expertise and passion.

They clearly channel their unabashed love of AC/DC on songs such as Down And Dirty which has an oh-so-clever intro that’s guaranteed to make you bang your head and the equally heavy Highway Rebel with a ribcage-shaking bass, killer drums and great guitar solo. LG Valeta’s guitar playing is creative but never over indulgent and Armand’s bass play and Bon Scott impression are a perfect compliment to the whole sound. They try to bring something new to the table with their mini epic Promised Land which fails to reach the heights of the other tracks but still provides some interesting ideas and riffs.

The album

77 seem to be a band for whom rock is their raison d’etre and on this longplayer they give it all the space it needs. From the opening track which reveals the bands most rock-inspired hook to date (Do It For Love) to the cool writhing guitars of Hardworking Liar it’s clear that this is an album for fans of AC/DC, Aerosmith and the Stones.

The pulsing drums of Backdoor Man and the moody grooves of Raw add a different flavour to the record but it isn’t until we get to the middle that the album really kicks into high gear. Gimme Rock N Roll is a riff pleasure and is the sort of track that will have you grooving along without even trying, while Big Smoker Pig and Shake It Up are equally worthy of your attention.

There is a real sense of urgency on this album and the fact that it’s a little ahead of its time makes listening all the more enjoyable for those of us in a world where rock is all but dead. A real gem that deserves to be heard.
