Hazzikostas confirmed that the controller support for controllers in WoW will be in the form of providing users access to the API (WoTLK Gold) for enabling the setup of a controller. It won't be possible to connect your Xbox or PlayStation controller to play WoW however, this API access will enable players who use an Xbox Adaptive Controller and others to play the game in a manner that is suitable to their preferences.
The new controller support is designed to give players who suffer from physical disabilities or disabilities the ability to play WoW without having too much hassle, Hazzikostas said.
"It's more about direct API access that is targeted primarily towards people with disabilities. There are lots of users who do not have the capabilities to utilize a keyboard and mouse, or other traditional tools for controlling who've been using many complicated solutions to obtain devices like Microsoft's powerful controller, which allows users to connect with the world of games," he said. "We were looking to eliminate the necessity to go through those hurdles. We also wanted to more directly support the API. We're eager to see what this community will come up with."
WoW won't provide a WoTLK Classic Gold connection using existing console controllers any time in the near future. Because of the complex nature of WoW's controls - you can possess over a dozen capabilities in all, for instance--traditional controller support isn't an easy task.
