India is known worldwide for its diverse culture and rich heritage. One aspect that attracts millions of tourists is the country’s diversity in faiths and religions. India is home to many popular pilgrimage sites that attract devotees from within the country and also globally. These religious destinations have enormous potential to boost faith based tourism in India.

Popular Pilgrimage Sites

Some of the most prominent religious sites in India that see huge pilgrim footfalls include Haridwar, Rishikesh, Vaishno Devi, Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Sabarimala, Tirupati, Puri Jagannath Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple and Golden Temple. Haridwar and Rishikesh located on the banks of river Ganga are considered highly pious by Hindus and people visit these places for ritual bathing and prayers. The Vaishno Devi shrine situated in the Trikuta mountains of Jammu sees around 8-10 million devotees annually, making it one of the most visited shrines globally. Ajmer Sharif Dargah and Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai are hugely popular pilgrimage destinations among Muslims and Hindus respectively, within the country and internationally.

Scope for Infrastructure Development

Despite being blessed with many religious tourism destinations, India Faith Based Tourism is yet to optimize their potential fully. Most of the popular pilgrimage towns lack good infrastructure and amenities for pilgrims. There is immense scope for the government and private agencies to invest in development of basic facilities like accommodation, clean drinking water, hygienic toilets, electricity, transport infrastructure at these religious centers. This will enhance the pilgrim experience and encourage longer stay, generating more revenue. Development of last mile connectivity through roads, railways and other modes needs focused attention. Upgradation of surrounding areas and establishment of interpretation centers, museums etc can amplify visitor experience and engagement.

Advantageous Policies and Regulations

The government has recognized faith based tourism as a major sector for boosting tourism and employment. Several center and state governments have implemented travel subsidy programs, ease of access and transport facilities specific for pilgrims. For example, the Government of India offers discounted rail tickets, battery cars and other amenities for devotees traveling to Vaishno Devi, Siddhivinayak Temple and other popular shrines. Similar initiatives need to be replicated across states. Streamlining of regulations regarding land acquisition, development permissions around religious centers can expedite faith based infrastructure projects. Promotion through international tie-ups and participation in global religious tourism exhibitions and events would further expand opportunities.
