Hazardous Location Standards for LED Lighting

LED lighting provides many benefits for hazardous location applications due to its longer lifespan, lower heat output, and higher energy efficiency compared to traditional lighting sources. It specifies testing requirements for ignition protection, enclosure integrity, temperature ratings, and marking. CSA C22.2 No. 30-M1986 provides similar rules for Class I, Zones 0, 1, and 2 as well as dust ignition-proof enclosures for Zone 21 and 22 applications. Lights certified to these standards ensure they cannot ignite flammable gases or dust that may be present.

Lower Operating Temperatures


LED lights produce much less heat compared to high-intensity discharge (HID) and fluorescent lamps. LED lights certified for hazardous locations are rated to operate at maximum case temperatures under 200°C/392°F.
