What is TETRA?
Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) is a professional mobile radio and two-way transmissions technology used by emergency services, transportation services, government agencies and military forces worldwide. TETRA was specifically designed for use by dispatch communications unlike traditional radio systems and offers improved voice and data transmission capabilities.

History and Development
The technology standards for TETRA were first developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s by a European Telecommunications Standards Institute project group called Special Mobile Group or SMG. The goal was to define common standards for a professional mobile radio system to meet the needs of different user groups across borders and networks. The first TETRA specification, known as Air Interface, was published in 1996 paving the way for commercial deployment.

Key Features and Capabilities
Some key features that distinguish TETRA from traditional two-way radio systems include:

Direct Mode Operation (DMO) - This allows users to communicate directly with each other in the event network coverage is unavailable or disrupted. Portable radios can connect directly to other nearby radios without needing a base station.

Trunking - TETRA uses trunking technology which allows dynamic sharing of available radio frequencies between users. This improves frequency utilization compared to conventional systems where each user occupies their own dedicated frequency channel at all times.

Quality of Service (QoS) - The TETRA standard supports different QoS levels to prioritize different types of calls and messages ensuring critical transmissions are delivered ahead of less urgent traffic.

Encrypted Communications - Its security features provide end-to-end encryption for secure voice, video and data transmissions important for agencies like law enforcement and military.

Interoperability - TETRA networks and terminals from different manufacturers globally comply to the same ETSI standards enabling interoperability between users, infrastructures and applications across borders.

Applications and Usage
Since its commercial launch, Terrestrial Trunked RADIO has been adopted worldwide for mission critical and business critical land mobile radio communications. Some common applications and user groups include:

Public Safety - Police, fire and ambulance services rely on TETRA for instant secure command and control voice communications in emergency response situations.

Transportation - Used for rail, metro, bus and maritime transport systems to enable dispatcher to crew/driver tactical voice and data transmissions.

Utilities - Deployed by electricity, gas and water companies for managing field workforce and technicians during maintenance or repair works.

Industrial - TETRA helps improve workplace safety in sectors like mining, construction, manufacturing through staff alerts and data roaming.

Military - Armed forces use it for battlefield communications, logistics coordination and remote base connectivity in hostile environments.

Airport Operations - Provide secure long range voice links between control tower, fire brigade to security teams on airport runways and taxiways.
