WoTLK Classic Gold now has 7.6 million players, Activision Blizzard announced today just 100,000 fewer than the 7.7 million number announced in July. The drop in subscribers is smaller than the previous quarter, where the number of players dropped between 8.3 million players to 7.7 million.

Blizzard entertainment's MMO remains the most popular game with subscriptions within the gaming industry, Activision said. It's also one of the few major subscription-based MMOs that are available with many rivals opting for the free-to-play business model.

In a conference call following the announcement of earnings, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick declared that "significant and thrilling new content" will be being added in World of Warcraft. The details weren't disclosed. Blizzard entertainment recently registered "Warlords of Draenor."

The World of Warcraft subscriber figure was announced in Activision Blizzard's report on earnings for the period that ended on September 30. Net revenue for the quarter of $657 million as compared to $751 million in the previous year. In total, Activision Blizzard posted a profit of $56 million during the quarter, which is compared to the profit of $226 million the year before.

Digital channel net revenue in the quarter was $399 million, and accounted for more than 61 percent of the quarter's net revenue, Activision Blizzard said. World of Warcraft: Ghosts which was released yesterday, brought in $1 billion in sales within its first day of launch however this figure isn't included in the company's earnings report today.

"Our third quarter results were above our expectations and we're able increase our forecast for 2013 net revenue as well as earnings per share" Kotick said. "Robust ongoing interaction with our main franchises led to the digital revenues, and made up the majority of revenue. This quarter has shown that games such as buy WoTLK Gold engage and keep our players engaged all year."
