Required knowledge and competency:

The designation of Chartered Marine Technologist is available for everyone capable of showing the required high-level knowledge, understanding and professional competency.

The exemplifying educational standard is a Master’s level qualification in an approved subject. There are many ways to fulfill this standard, including a combination of vocational qualifications, academic awards and experiential learning by means of work.

Competency includes the understanding, knowledge and skills underpinning performance. Having a CMarTech designation will require you to maintain your professional competency, work within professional codes of conduct. Besides that, you need to actively participate in your profession. It means there is also a need for continuing professional development.

Assessment of knowledge and competency:

The IMarEST is the only organization that can confer the CMarTech designation on those fulfilling the criteria. For this, you need to have your competency assessed by the IMarEST.

The evaluation is made on the basis of standards that are rigorously applied by IMarEST’s Professional Affairs and Education Committee and the Membership Committee, as being suitable for CMarTech.

The assessment process starts with a written application to IMarEST’s Membership Services Department. Claims of experience, qualifications and training will need formal documented proof. When giving details of your experience, you need to show how it relates to the necessary competencies for CMarTech.

After a review of the documented evidence, the Membership Committee will need you to have a professional review interview (PRI) 1. The Membership Services Department will inform you about the necessary procedures.

If deficiencies in the application come up, the Membership Committee will usually be able to suggest methods in which they can be addressed (this may involve further learning, training or extra experience).

If you receive a positive decision on your application for CMarTech, you will be registered as a Chartered Marine Technologist and your details will be included on the Register of Chartered Marine Technologists. The designation retention will need continued membership of the IMarEST and payment of the required subscription.
