You may like to curl up on a soft, comfortable sofa, or you may need a sofa fabric that is strong and durable enough to withstand young children or pets. Once you've decided on the different types of upholstery materials and chosen between natural and synthetic fibers, it's time to measure your sofa to determine how much fabric you'll need.

How to measure upholstery fabric for a sofa:

1)Measure the length of the sofa from the outside edge of each arm. Without sinking into the seat, let the tape go through the space between the arms.

2)Measure the length of the saddle, starting at the bottom of one arm and working your way to the other. Then measure the seat cushion depth from front to back.

3)Put the tape on the front of one of the arms, then pass it along the arm to the back, wrapping around the entire back and along the front of the other arm.

4)Measure the outline of the arm, place the tape where the arm meets the mat, and pass the tape up, over the arm, and down to the floor.

If your cushions are attached, you'll want to make a one-piece set, but if they're separate, a two-piece set works best. Some knitted fabrics will allow a little stretch, but others require very precise measurements.
