I will never know why someone in Jagex thought it would be a good idea to modify the artstyle that is more realistic and iconic. At the time it must have been difficult to know what the ideal call was.I played in 2004 - 2007 on and off, and back then it was memed on a bit as being the uncool cousin of WoW. There was an indirect peer pressure to just play wow instead. It was a time that is different. WoW's graphics also have a timeless charm to them, but again then wow had the advantage of becoming this mindblowing universe that was also present gen with a huge huge buzz.

I believe the gut response of Jagex was that their match wasn't taken as wow, and they felt that the need. Now it's easy to realize that this was not the right call, but again then graphics were bursting year on year and there was a hunger for that, and I'm sure they felt that the right move was to"evolve or die".
Yea I do not think the answer was cut and dry. Runescape filled a market, but WOW was doing so much better financially and concerning runescape player count. WOW had cultural impact and has been built and backed by one of the largest gaming companies in the time. It was mocked for being a child's game, a sport that you eventually graduate from in order to play better games. And it looked that way.
I frankly think that you'd need to have been a madman/genius to have the balls to say'no, runescape is remaining the way it's' when browser matches were quickly dying (look what happened to neopets), PC gaming was becoming extremely sophisticated, and games such as league of legends and minecraft began blowing in a way that MMOs never did. Even so, runescape continued to be the retarded cousin regardless of what it attempted.
